ABSTRACT The most southern Brazilian state, Rio Grande do Sul, is characterized by high crop yield and is, currently, the third leading soybean producer in the country. Therefore, agriculture is very important to the economy of the region. Because agriculture is highly dependent on variable weather parameters, the present study aimed to test the Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) as a regional indicator of water status under the climate and soybean crop management conditions that predominate in northwestern Rio Grande do Sul. For this, soybean crop seasons with contrasting yields were selected: 2004 – 2005 (yield 0.5 t∙ha–1) and 2009 – 2010 (2.7 t∙ha–1). TVDI was obtained from the surface temperature (TS) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index... |

The THAUMEX measurement campaign, carried out during the summer of 2011 in Thau, a coastal lagoon in southern France, focused on episodes of marine breezes. During the campaign, three intensive observation periods (IOPs) were conducted and a large amount of data were collected. Subsequently, standalone modelling using the FLake lake model was used, first to assess the surface temperature and the surface energy balance, and second to determine the energy budget of the water column at the measurement site. Surface fluxes were validated against in situ measurements, and it was determined that heat exchanges are dominated by evaporation. We also demonstrated that the model was sensitive to the light extinction coefficient at Thau, due to its shallowness and... |

In the present study, we use a coupled model to evaluate the effect of shallow salinity stratification on the sea surface temperature (SST) and on the monsoon onset in the southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS). A 100-year control experiment shows that the coupled model reproduces the main climatic features in this region in terms of SST, precipitation and barrier layer (BL). A 100-year sensitivity experiment (where BL effects have been suppressed in the SEAS) shows that BL enhances the spring SST warming by 0.5 degrees C, and leads to a statistically significant increase of precipitation in May (3 mm/day) linked to an early (10 to 15 days) monsoon onset. This suggests that the BL extent may be a useful predictor of the summer monsoon onset in the area with a... |

Sedimentary delta(15)N records from the oligotrophic western equatorial Pacific (WEP) off Mindanao show that late Holocene sedimentary delta(15)N is substantially lower than that of the early Holocene, following a gradual >3 parts per thousand decrease that occurred between 7 and 3 kyrs ago. Analyses of modem day nitrate isotope profiles from the same region indicate the sensitivity of the WEP N pools towards (1) the advection of (15)N-enriched nitrate from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) by the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and the Mindanao Current in subsurface waters and, (2) at shallow depths, the input of new and (15)N-depleted nitrate through N, fixation. We suggest that the Holocene decrease in sedimentary delta(15)N reflects a diminished... |

An ocean mixed layer heat budget methodology is used to investigate the physical processes determining subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean heat content (OHC) variability on decadal-multidecadal timescales using the state-of-the-art climate model HadGEM3-GC2. New elements include development of an equation for evolution of anomalous SST for interannual and longer timescales in a form analogous to that for OHC, parameterization of the diffusive heat flux at the base of the mixed layer and analysis of a composite AMOC event. Contributions to OHC and SST variability from two sources are evaluated i) net ocean-atmosphere heat flux and ii) all other processes, including advection, diffusion and entrainment for SST. Anomalies in... |

The ocean reanalysis Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) 2.2.4 is used to explore the changes in upwelling from normal conditions to either El Niño or La Niña conditions. Physical and termodynamics variables from the reanalysis are used to explore the structure and behaviour of El Niño Southern Oscillaion (ENSO) events. The results of this analysis show that sea surface temperature (SST), entrainment velocity, wind stress, mixed layer depth, wind stress curl, and heat content anomalies are in general agreement with ENSO theory. Interestingly, the distribution of upwelling based on the entrainment velocity is very patchy, which led us to explore zonal and meridional sections of vertical velocity. We used three methods to compute changes in upwelling... |

A Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) is used to simulate the sea surface temperature of the Tropical and North Pacific. Based on the different combinations of two air-Sea flux data sets (COADS and ECMWF) and two bulk parameter formulas (non-constant and constant), four numerical experiments are carried out. The following conclusions can be deduced from the numerical results. (1) The numerical results using non-constant bulk parameter formula are much better than those using constant one. In the Pacific area from 40°N to 20°S, the annual average SST obtained from the experiment using non-constant bulk parameter formula is 0.21 °C higher than that from the satellite-based SST climatology (the pathfinder data). However, the difference is 0.63 °C for the... |

Characteristics of urban heat island (UHI) effect and its cause are investigated by using MODIS data in April 2004. Surface parameters from the MODIS data have surface temperature (ts), albedo(a), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Their heterogeneities over urban and rural area are analyzed based on land cover classification, and their relations are also presented in order to explain the UHI effect. The results show that there exists obvious the UHI effect. Ts over urban areas are by 10.83 % higher than those over rural area, and NDVI and a over urban area are by 62 % and 18.75 % less than those over rural area, respectively. Surface temperature has significantly negative correlation with NDVI and their correlation coefficient is -0.73.... |
