Mineral and organic soluble forms of zinc, iron and copper: Distribution in the Seine Estuary. ArchiMer
Gandon, R; Guegueniat, P; Fischer, J; Wartel, M.
One characteristic of the Seine Estuary system is the process of sediment resuspension by the specific hydrodynamics of this environment. It's the main factor of trace metals transport. Autotrophic activities also have an effect on the estuary, by pH variation. The behavior of soluble and organic copper, iron, have been studied in relation to salinity in and out of the estuary. The results are compared with those of other estuaries.

Suspended sediments in a macrotidal estuary: comparison and use of different sensors ArchiMer
Lunven, Michel; Gentien, Patrick.
Measurements made using an in situ particle-sizer (PSA) were compared to those of an optical backscatter sensor (OBS) in a macrotidal estuary. Both estimate the total volume of particles. After comparison with dry weight of suspended matter sampled in the study area, the different measurements were converted into dry weight. In three different kinetic energy regimes, times series were coherent for most of the observations. Discrepancies of suspended sediment concentrations estimated by both sensors appeared under specific hydrodynamic conditions: they were related to occurrences of definite particle populations. Overestimations and underestimations of measurements by the instruments depend on the optical principles of the sensors (backscatter and...

Dynamique des matières en suspensions minérales des eaux de surface de la Manche observée par satellite et modélisée numériquement. ArchiMer
Rivier, Aurelie.
Study of mineral suspended particulate matter (SPM) is essential to understand ecosystem dynamics. SPM influences light penetration which is closely related to primary production and carries pollutants and nutrients within the water masses. This work aims to study near-surface mineral SPM dynamics in the English Channel using two complementary methods: remote-sensing by satellites and numerical modelling. Firstly, MODIS and MERIS satellite images processed by the IFREMER semi-analytical algorithm and describing non-algal SPM, are analysed to build three statistical models which are able to estimate near-surface SPM using simple variables, e.g., tidal coefficient, significant wave height and mean chlorophyll-a concentration. Secondly, the three-dimensional...

Constraining the origin of recently deposited particles using natural radionuclides 7 Be and 234 Th ex in deltaic sediments ArchiMer
Wu, Junwen; Rabouille, Christophe; Charmasson, Sabine; Reyss, Jean Louis; Cagnat, Xavier.
7Be and 234Thex activities were determined in sediment cores off the Rhône River mouth (Gulf of Lions), in order to trace the initial transport and deposition of riverine suspended particulate matter (SPM) and evaluate the impact of flood events through 7 cruises carried out between 2007 and 2008. Consistently high 7Be and 234Thex inventories of 2000–3000 mBq cm−2 and 3000–5000 mBq cm−2, respectively, were observed within a ~5 km radius off the Rhône River mouth. Their spatial distributions showed a gradual decrease with increasing distance from the Rhône River mouth, and the decrease in 7Be was more pronounced than that of 234Thex, indicating that recent riverine SPM is rapidly deposited in the area located near the river mouth. This area is also...

Coccolith-derived turbidity and hydrological conditions in May in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Perrot, Laurie; Gohin, Francis; Ruiz-pino, Diana; Lampert, Luis; Huret, Martin; Dessier, Aurelie; Malestroit, Pascale; Dupuy, Christine; Bourriau, Paul.
Coccolithophore blooms occur regularly from April to June in the Bay of Biscay where they have been observed for many years from ocean-colour imagery thanks to the ability of their calcite plates to scatter light. They are easily depicted on interpolated images of non-algal Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) derived from satellite reflectance data in May, at the time of the PELGAS (PELagique GAScogne) annual surveys. Over the springs 2012 to 2015, the PELGAS surveys provided in-situ data on the turbidity throughout the water column and on the hydrological environment prevailing during the blooms in the vicinity of the continental shelf break. The satellite-derived SPM in the area of coccolithophore blooms was closely related to measured turbidity in the...

Investigating Rhône River plume (Gulf of Lions, France) dynamics using metrics analysis from the MERIS 300m Ocean Color archive (2002 − 2012) ArchiMer
Gangloff, Aurelien; Verney, Romaric; Doxaran, David; Ody, Anouck; Estournel, Claude.
In coastal environments, river plumes are major transport mechanisms for particulate matter, nutriments and pollutants. Ocean colour satellite imagery is a valuable tool to explore river turbid plume characteristics, providing observations at high temporal and spatial resolutions of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration over a long time period, covering a wide range of hydro-meteorological conditions. We propose here to use the MERIS-FR (300 m) Ocean Colour archive (2002–2012) in order to investigate Rhône River turbid plume patterns generated by the two main forcings acting on the north-eastern part of the Gulf of Lions (France): wind and river freshwater discharge. Results are exposed considering plume metrics (area of extension,...

Development of a Semi-Analytical Algorithm for the Retrieval of Suspended Particulate Matter from Remote Sensing over Clear to Very Turbid Waters ArchiMer
Han, Bing; Loisel, Hubert; Vantrepotte, Vincent; Meriaux, Xavier; Bryere, Philippe; Ouillon, Sylvain; Dessailly, David; Xing, Qianguo; Zhu, Jianhua.
Remote sensing of suspended particulate matter, SPM, from space has long been used to assess its spatio-temporal variability in various coastal areas. The associated algorithms were generally site specific or developed over a relatively narrow range of concentration, which make them inappropriate for global applications (or at least over broad SPM range). In the frame of the GlobCoast project, a large in situ data set of SPM and remote sensing reflectance, R-rs(lambda), has been built gathering together measurements from various coastal areas around Europe, French Guiana, North Canada, Vietnam, and China. This data set covers various contrasting coastal environments diversely affected by different biogeochemical and physical processes such as sediment...

Trawling-induced resuspension and dispersal of muddy sediments and dissolved elements in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
De Madron, X; Ferre, B; Le Corre, Gildas; Grenz, C; Conan, P; Pujo Pay, M; Buscail, R; Bodiot, O.
A dedicated trawling experiment was performed at three sites on the Gulf of Lion continental shelf, with the aim of assessing the resuspension of particulate and dissolved matter triggered by different types of trawls on muddy sediments. The different configurations were: (i) bottom trawl, with bobbin for ground rope (Rockhopper): (ii) bottom trawl, without bobbin (Medits); and (iii) pelagic trawl, towed at 1 and 10m above the seabed. The plumes of resuspended sediment were measured using the acoustic backscattered intensity, from a towed ADCP. Concomitant profiles of particle size-distribution, light transmission and water samples were collected, outside and inside the plumes. The analysis of the data enabled derivation of the major physical and...

Contamination of the Bay of Biscay by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) following the T/V "Erika" oil spill ArchiMer
Tronczynski, Jacek; Munschy, Catherine; Moisan, Karine; Guiot, Nadege; Truquet, Isabelle; Olivier, Nathalie; Men, Sophie; Furaut, Audrey.
An investigation was carried out into the PAH chemical contamination resulting from the "Erika" tanker fuel spillage of December 1999 along the French coast of the Bay of Biscay. A qualitative and quantitative assessment was conducted of this contamination in water, suspended particulate matter, sediments, and in intertidal molluscs. The chemical composition of PAHs in pre-spill and post-spill samples was determined and used to distinguish the "Erika's" fuel as the source of PAHs in the coastal environment of the Bay of Biscay. Changes in concentrations of PAHs were also assessed. The GC-MS analysis made it possible to identify and quantify parent unsubstituted PAHs, alkyl-substituted PAHs (C-PAH) and sulfur heterocycle unsubstituted and alkyl substituted...

Microbial hydrogen production potential in shallow oceanic nepheloid layers. ArchiMer
Schwarz, J; Loeblich, L; Schropp, S.
Seawater samples taken from shallow suspended particle maxima (20-57m) at or near the base of the surface mixed layer in various oceanic areas were tested for their potential to produce hydrogen (H sub(2)) gas. Results suggest that hydrogen can be bacterially produced through a fermentative process in microanaerobic niches within particulate matter. The organisms responsible for this process are ubiquitous within the temperate and tropical waters sampled. Enumeration of potential H sub(2)-producing bacteria using fluorescent antibody techniques yielded a maximum at the base of the surface mixed layer, the same depth where the greatest H sub(2) gas production potential was observed. Hydrogen-producing bacteria comprised up to 15% of the total bacterial...

Variation in the composition of carbohydrates in the Dona Paula Bay (west of India) during May/June 1998 ArchiMer
D'Souza, F; Bhosle, Nb.
Suspended particulate material was analysed for particulate carbohydrate concentration and composition and for the bulk parameters: suspended particulate matter, chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen and particulate proteins. Chlorophyll a concentrations increased from May 7 to 15 due to the development of a small scale bloom of diatom Navicula sp. and decreased for the remaining period after the premonsoon rain on 16 and 17 May. Concentrations of particulate organic carbon, organic nitrogen, carbohydrates and proteins increased with the increase in chlorophyll a concentration. Together particulate protein-carbon and carbohydrate-carbon accounted for 10 to 30% of the organic carbon. Glucose contributed 26 to 81% to the...

Flux sédimentaire en estuaire de Seine : quantification et variabilité multi-échelle sur la base de mesure de turbidité (réseau SYNAPSES) ArchiMer
Druine, Flavie.
The dynamics of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) in macrotidal estuaries is highly variable both spatially (from the fluvial compartment to the estuary mouth) and temporally (from the second to several years), but it is essential to understand and quantify the sedimentary dynamics of estuarine environments. With the development of high-frequency measurement networks around the world, the main objective of this study is to qualify the turbidity measurements acquired by a high-frequency measurement network (SYNAPSES network) located on the Seine estuary (i) in terms of monitoring the SPM dynamics from the fluvial compartment to the turbidity maximal zone (TMZ) and (ii) in terms of estimation of the SPM fluxes on different spatio-temporal scales of the...
