Comparing Parts with the Whole: Willingness to Pay for Pesticide-Free, Non-GM, and Organic Potatoes and Sweet Corn 31

Auction experiments were used to investigate demand relationships and willingness to pay (WTP) for four versions of potatoes and sweet corn—conventional, organic, and two parts of organic: no pesticides and non-genetically modified (non-GM). Elasticities showed strong and asymmetric substitute relationships between organic and its parts. Combined premiums of the parts were not significantly different than the whole organic premium, suggesting WTP for the attributes are not additive. A two-stage heteroskedastic tobit model found significant WTP for each part dependent on demographics and beliefs about conventional versions. Results suggest segments for parts of organic could be established alongside the whole.

An Ex-Post Economic Analysis of the Hybrix5 Sweet Corn Breeding Program in Queensland 31
Franco-Dixon, Mary Ann.
The $2.1 million invested for the sweet corn research breeding program resulted in the release of Hybrix5 in 1995 which is a new sweet corn variety with improved insect and disease resistance. Based on the ex-post evaluation of this research program, it was estimated that the net benefits of the program up to 2006 (in 2006 dollars) is around $3 million. The producer benefits are 4.5 times the costs of R&D. Extending the period up to 2012 (20 years) resulted in estimated net benefits of around $6 million in 2006 dollars. The producer benefits are 7.2 times the costs of the R&D.

Experiment on post-emergence herbicide, glufosinate in sweet corn production field conducted at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center during November 2008-January 2010. The objective of this experiment was to study on the efficiency of herbicides and their affect on sweet corn hybrid, Insee 2 variety. The experiment laid out in RCBD, composed of 10 treatments, with 3 replications. The results revealed that weed found in the experiment were purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus), wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla), tropical spiderwort (Commelina benghalensis) and Itchgrass (Rottboellia cochinchinensis). The application of glufosinate at the rate of 800-1,400 g/rai, as post-emergence herbicide gave good weed control of 80-86 percent, and better...

Objectives of the Sweet Corn and Baby Corn Improvement Project of Kasetsart University was to improve populations and develop inbreds and single-cross hybrids of sweet corn and the non-detasseld baby corn for high yield and good eating quality for the fresh market and processing. Three sweet corn populations KSC 3 (AC0) and TSC 1 DMR (BC0) and KSC 2 (CC0) were improved by using S2 testcrossed with inbred testers KSei 14004 and SSWI 114, respectively, except for CC3 using S3 testcross). During 3 years (2007-2009), KSC 3(HI)C3 (AC3), TSC 1 DMR (HI)C2 (BC2) and KSC 2(HI)C3 (CC3) were successfully improved including their inbred and hybrid development.
