Mille, Tiphaine.
Otoliths are calcified structures located in Osteichthyes’ inner ear that are involved in audition and balance. Their morphology is used as an indicator of various ecological processes or properties. This application requires identifying the endogenous and exogenous factors that act simultaneously as sources of shape variation. This thesis aims at detecting and quantifying the relative contributions of directional asymmetry and diet to otolith shape variation at the intra-population level. Directional asymmetry between left and right otoliths was found in flat-fishes, the blind-side otolith being always longer and larger, whereas it was negligible in round-fishes. However, asymmetry amplitude never exceeded 18 %, which suggests evolutionary canalization of...

Influence of Reynolds number and forcing type in a turbulent von Karman flow ArchiMer
Saint-michel, Brice; Dubrulle, B.; Marie, Louis; Ravelet, F.; Daviaud, F..
We present a detailed study of a global bifurcation occuring in a turbulent von Karman swirling flow. In this system, the statistically steady states progressively display hysteretic behaviour when the Reynolds number is increased above the transition to turbulence. We examine in detail this hysteresis using asymmetric forcing conditions-rotating the impellers at different speeds. For very high Reynolds numbers, we study the sensitivity of the hysteresis cycle-using complementary particle image velocimetry and global mechanical measurements-to the forcing nature, imposing either the torque or the speed of the impellers. New mean states, displaying multiple quasi-steady states and negative differential responses, are experimentally observed in torque...

Body Asymmetries in Young Male Road Cyclists International Journal of Morphology
Rauter,Samo; Vodicar,Janez; Simenko,Jozef.
An anthropometric analysis was conducted on 64 competitive young male road cyclists of different age categories (U17; U19; & U23 years of age). The purpose of the study is to find asymmetries between the left and right side of upper and lower limbs with the NX-16 (TC2) 3D body scanner, which includes measurement of left and right upper arm girth, elbow girth, forearm girth, wrist girth, thigh girth, knee girth, thigh length, calf girth, and shin length. Body composition was measured by the bioelectrical impedance machine InBody 720 (Biospace Ltd.). Results of body composition measurements of male road cyclists showed that U17 and U19 youth road cyclist differed statistically in five (from 11) paired variables, and the U23 age group differed...

Something gone awry: unsolved mysteries in the evolution of asymmetric animal genitalia Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M..
The great diversity in genital shape and function across and within the animal phyla hamper the identification of specific evolutionary trends that stretch beyond the limits of the group under study. Asymmetry might be a trait in genital morphology that could play a unifying role in the evolutionary biology of genitalia. Here, I review the current knowledge on the taxonomic distribution, phylogenetic patterns, genetics, development, and ecology of asymmetric (chiral) genitalia. Asymmetric genitalia (male as well as female) have evolved from bilaterally symmetric ones (and sometimes vice versa), innumerous times in most animal taxa with internal fertilisation, and especially in Platyhelminthes, Arthropoda, Nematoda, and Chordata. In groups with asymmetric...

Estimation of a Composite Food Demand System for the United States—A Revisit AgEcon
Luo, Haobo; Huang, Chung L.; Lin, Biing-Hwan.
We revisit the composite food demand system for the United States covering the period from 1953 to 2008. We were unable to produce elasticity measures that are as close or similar to those reported in Huang and Haidacher (1983), although the same demand system specification was employed. Our results based on the more recent data set of 1982-2008 show that most of the own-price elasticities are negative and statistically significant, varying from -.1861 (poultry) to -.9476 (nonfood). In general, the estimated own-price elasticities appear to be smaller in magnitude or more inelastic than previously reported. In contrast, we estimate the significant income elasticities for food vary from .5172 (dairy) to 4.6687 (fish), while Huang and Haidaicher (1983)...

TESTING FOR SYMMETRY IN PRICE TRANSMISSION: AN EXTENSION OF THE SHILLER LAG STRUCTURE WITH AN APPLICATION TO FRESH TOMATOES AgEcon
Parrott, Scott D.; Eastwood, David B.; Brooker, John R..
An empirical model of the price relationship between distribution stages is developed based on the Shiller lag. The assumption of constant returns to scale is relaxed to incorporate changes in the volume of shipments. An iterative GLS methodology is developed to estimate the model. Tests for symmetry, length of adjustment, and the amount of price transmission are outlined. An application using the change in the retail price of tomatoes based on shipping point price changes is described. Results suggest that the supermarket chain does not respond differently to price increases versus decreases at the shipping point level.

Inferring the developmental basis of the sea star abnormality "double ambulacral groove" (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) RChHN
HOTCHKISS,FREDERICK H C.
Very rarely a ray of a sea star is unusually wide and has two parallel ambulacral grooves that extend to a single tip. Such a ray has two terminal plates that are coalesced laterally. This abnormality is inferred to develop as a rare result of regeneration because it is recorded from a species with obligate asexual reproduction (fission and regeneration of halves; no gametes). This conclusion is supported also by an example where the abnormality affects only the distal third of a ray

The sequence of origin of the postmetamorphic rays in Heliaster and Labidiaster (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) RChHN
SANCHEZ R,PATRICIO.
Postmetamorphic rays in Heliaster and Labidiaster originate in four `quadrants' between the five primary rays, and not normally in the madreporic interradius. The rays originate in one of two very definite sequences depending on the species. H. kubiniji and H. multiradiatus share one sequence, whereas H. canopus, H. helianthus and Labidiaster share the other sequence. Pycnopodia, Rathbunaster, Heliaster and Labidiaster add rays at far greater sizes and in a manner that is distinctive from other multiradiate starfish, possibly indicating a new taxonomic unit

Air-assisted velocity profiles and perceptive canopy interactions of commercial airblast sprayers used in Pacific Northwest perennial specialty crop production CIGR Journal
Khot, Lav R.
This study aimed at providing a data-driven understanding of air velocity profiles for four commercial airblast sprayers widely used in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) region of the United States. The Rear’s Powerblast (S1) and Pakblast (S2), Turbomist 30P (S3), and Columbia Accutec (S4) were evaluated using the Smart Spray Analytical System (Bahlol et al., 2020). Air velocity contour profiles and geometrical attributes (symmetry and uniformity) were characterized on two sides as well as at three horizontal distances from the outlet (0.6, 1.5, and 2.1 m) of each sprayer. The air velocity profiles were matched to vertical canopy zones of three typical perennial specialty crops (cherry, apple, and grapevine) to identify their suitability. Air velocity...
