The Tegelen clay-pits: a hundred year old classical locality Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
Having been described in 1904 by Dubois as a locality for fossil mammals, the Tegelen clay-pits are nowadays considered a ‘classical’ locality. It is the type locality of the Tiglian, a warm period of the Early Pleistocene or Late Pliocene. The pits are primarily known for their mammalian remains, but have also yielded seeds, pollen and freshwater snails. A century of collecting has resulted in extensive collections of large mammals in various museums, the most important of which are the Teylers Museum, Haarlem and the National Museum of Natural History Naturalis in Leiden. The latter museum also holds a large collection of microvertebrates, collected during campaigns in the 1970s. These campaigns showed that, in spite of the numerous fossils, the Tegelen...

Gliridae (Rodentia, Mammalia) from the Upper Pliocene of Tegelen (province of Limburg, The Netherlands) Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
Two species of dormouse have been found in the Upper Pliocene clays of Tegelen, Muscardinus pliocaenicus and Glirulus pusillus. The latter is the first record of this genus in The Netherlands. Muscardinus pliocaenicus shows derived characteristics and is close to the Recent hazelmouse M. avellanarius. The record of Glirulus pusillus is one of the last in Europe. Like the flying squirrel Hylopetes debruijni, also known from Tegelen, G. pussilus ranks among a group of Pliocene animals with its living relatives in Asia. Thus, there is an analogy with the Tertiary flora, which also has relicts in the same area.

A century of research on the classical locality of Tegelen (province of Limburg, The Netherlands) Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den; Vos, J. de.
In 1904 Eugène Dubois published the first report on fossil mammals from the vicinity of Tegelen. After a century of research the clay-pits from the area are known as a classical locality for Villafranchian mammals. Antje Schreuder's work was particularly important for making the fossils from Tegelen known. Her papers, however, also indicate some problems. The large mammal fossils were gathered by clay-workers in the local ceramic industry, and the fragmentary nature of the fossils is partly caused by injudicious handling while extracting the bones from the clay. Because the Tegelen fossils are chance finds rather than the results of careful excavations, their exact provenance is not established. The only exception is the collection of micromammals, which...
