ABSTRACT 709 clinical mastitis cases were analyzed and treated with antimicrobial combination cephalexin-neomycin and the anti-inflammatory prednisolone. A sample of milk was collected to perform a microbiological culture before starting the treatment and 14 days later. Somatic cell count (SCC) was obtained from samples collected on the day of the clinical case (D0), 14 days after (D14) and 28 days after (D28). Of the total, 435 (61.4%) at the D0 exhibited growth of microorganisms. Of the isolated agents, 365 (84%) were Gram-positive, and 66 (16%) were Gram-negative. A clinical cure was achieved in 63% of cases. Bacteriological cure occurred in 75% of cases. Only at D28 after the clinical case a significant SCC reduction was verified. The logistic...

Imaging and therapy with radionuclide labeled magnetic nanoparticles BABT
Ünak,Perihan.
Magnetic nanoparticles offer exciting new opportunities including the improvement of the quality of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), hyperthermic treatment for malignant cells, site-specific drug delivery and also the recent research interest of manipulating cell membranes. The biological applications of these nanomaterials require these nanoparticles to have high magnetization values, size smaller than 20 nm, narrow particle size distribution and a special surface coating for both avoiding toxicity and allowing the coupling of biomolecules. In this review, we focus on the feasibility of radionuclide labeled magnetic nanoparticles, as drug carriers, and summarize recent advances in this field.

Radiopeptides from diagnosis to therapy BABT
Buscombe,John. R..
Radiopeptides are playing an increasing role in the diagnosis of disease. Initially based on the somatatostatin system, early research concentrated on identifying tumours of neuroendocrine origin. New techniques with artificial peptides are extending their role into other areas such as thrombus formation and heart disease. It has been shown that radiopeptides have excellent labelling new methods have looked at therapy starting with high activities of In-111 pentetreotide to the development of Y-90 based products and new and novel peptides and radio isotopes. Outside of PET there are the most exciting developments in nuclear medicine.

Combination therapy with pegylated interferon and ribavirin is considered the new standard therapy for naïve patients with chronic hepatitis C. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of treatment with weight-based peginterferon alpha-2b (1.5 mg/kg per week) plus ribavirin (800-1,200 mg/day) for 48 weeks in naïve, relapser and non-responder (to previous treatment with interferon plus ribavirin) patients with chronic hepatitis C. Sixty-seven naïve, 26 relapser and 40 non-responder patients were enrolled. The overall sustained virological response (SVR) for the intention-to-treat population was 54% for naïve, 62% for relapser and 38% for non-responder patients. In the naïve subgroup, SVR was significantly higher in patients with the non-1 genotype (67%)...

Marques,Luiz Paulo José; Flores,Juliana Timóteo; Barros Junior,Onofre de Oliveira; Rodrigues,Giovana Breda; Mourão,Carla de Medeiros; Moreira,Rosa Maria Portella.
BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in elderly patients can be a complex problem in terms of approach to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, because the patients often present nonspecific symptoms. The epidemiological and clinical characteristics of UTI in elderly women were studied, in order to make early diagnosis and prevent serious clinical complications secondary to UTI. METHODS: This was a prospective population-based study, with elderly women, during their first medical office visit. Medical records were obtained by clinical history and physical examination in order to detect signs and symptoms of UTI and the presence of comorbidities. Clean-catch midstream urine specimens for urinary dipstick test, sediment, and culture were collected;...

Double-blind trial of the efficacy of pentoxifylline vs thalidomide for the treatment of type II reaction in leprosy BJMBR
Sales,A.M.; Matos,H.J.de; Nery,J.A.C.; Duppre,N.C.; Sampaio,E.P.; Sarno,E.N..
Type II reaction in leprosy, or erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), is often characterized by severe clinical symptoms together with nerve function impairment leading to permanent disabilities. Thalidomide has been shown to be a highly effective drug for the treatment of ENL. It is, however, contraindicated for women of childbearing age due to its teratogenicity. On the other hand, pentoxifylline, used to treat hypercoagulable states, is not teratogenic and, like thalidomide, can inhibit the synthesis of tumor necrosis factor-a and other cytokines. In the present randomized double-blind clinical study we compared the effectiveness of orally administered pentoxifylline vs thalidomide in treating type II reaction in 44 patients. Daily doses of 300 mg...

The role of necroptosis in neurosurgical diseases BJMBR
Liu,T.; Bao,Y.H.; Wang,Y.; Jiang,J.Y..
Programmed necrosis or necroptosis is an alternative form of cell death that is executed through a caspase-independent pathway. Necroptosis has been implicated in many pathological conditions. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of necroptotic signaling has been shown to confer neuroprotection after traumatic and ischemic brain injury. Therefore, the necroptotic pathway represents a potential target for neurological diseases that are managed by neurosurgeons. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the understanding of necroptotic signaling pathways and explore the role of necroptotic cell death in craniocerebral trauma, brain tumors, and cerebrovascular diseases.

A novel frameshift mutation of Chediak-Higashi syndrome and treatment in the accelerated phase BJMBR
Wu,X.L.; Zhao,X.Q.; Zhang,B.X.; Xuan,F.; Guo,H.M.; Ma,F.T..
Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a rare autosomal recessive immunodeficiency disease characterized by frequent infections, hypopigmentation, progressive neurologic deterioration and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), known as the accelerated phase. There is little experience in the accelerated phase of CHS treatment worldwide. Here, we present a case of a 9-month-old boy with continuous high fever, hypopigmentation of the skin, enlarged lymph nodes, hepatosplenomegaly and lung infection. He was diagnosed with CHS by gene sequencing, and had entered the accelerated phase. After 8 weeks of therapy, the boy had remission and was prepared for allogenic stem cell transplantation.

Tratamento imunoterápico da pitiose equina. Infoteca-e
SANTURIO, J. M.; CATTO, J. B.; LEAL, A. B. M.; LEAL, A. T..

Instructions for the Use of MInCir Scale to Assess Methodological Quality in Therapy Studies International Journal of Morphology
Manterola,Carlos; Cartes-Velasquez,Ricardo; Otzen,Tamara.
The assessment of methodological quality (MQ) in biomedical research is an area of dynamic development over recent years globally. Understood as a complex and multidimensional construct, various groups have proposed tools for its assessment. Our team has designed and validated scales to assess MQ of therapy, diagnosis, and prognosis studies. However, as with other instruments, it is necessary to specify in detail how it is applied, in order to standardize the measurements made with this instrument. The aim of this article is to provide a guideline for the standardized application of the MInCir MQ scale for therapy or therapeutic procedure studies. A detailed description of the 3 domains and 6 items comprising the scale, specifying for each of them how to...

How to Evaluate and Interpret a Scientific Article About Therapy Or Therapeutic Procedures? International Journal of Morphology
Otzen,Tamara; Manterola,Carlos; García-Domínguez,Maricela.
Regardless of the subject area and design used, it has been verified that between 40% and 60% of the studies published in biomedical journals are articles about therapy or therapeutic procedures (TP). Anyone writing a manuscript related to therapy or TP or reading an article of this type must demand at the very least a clear, precise and concise objective with respect to the research conducted, explicit mention of the design used with the respective inherent methodological details, and the mention and execution of statistical tools and the measures of association, or at least the numbers needed to calculate these values. The aim of this manuscript is to present a synthesis of the fundamental elements for the correct writing, reading and assessment of such...
