Influence of gelatinous zooplankton on fish stocks in the Black Sea: analysis of biological time-series IBSS Repository
Grishin, A.; Daskalov, G.; Shlyakhov, V.; Mihneva, V..
Scientific information about the Black Sea ecosystem with respect to jelly plankton – fisheries interactions is reviewed. Long time-series of the main components of pelagic community: fishes, invertebrates, discussed trends, and relationships between them are analysed. The amount of information and results from the analyses will be used to formulate hypotheses about the linkages between gelatinous plankton and the other pelagic populations and the effects on fish stocks. These data will be used as a background study for the following stages in the Eurogel project: experimental work, data analyses and modelling.

Molecular analyses of protists in long-term observation programmes—current status and future perspectives ArchiMer
Stern, Rowena; Kraberg, Alexandra; Bresnan, Eileen; Kooistra, Wiebe H. C. F.; Lovejoy, Connie; Montresor, Marina; Moran, Xose Anxelu G.; Not, Fabrice; Salas, Rafael; Siano, Raffaele; Vaulot, Daniel; Amaral-zettler, Linda; Zingone, Adriana; Metfies, Katja.
Protists (microbial eukaryotes) are diverse, major components of marine ecosystems, and are fundamental to ecosystem services. In the last 10 years, molecular studies have highlighted substantial novel diversity in marine systems including sequences with no taxonomic context. At the same time, many known protists remain without a DNA identity. Since the majority of pelagic protists are too small to identify by light microscopy, most are neither comprehensively or regularly taken into account, particularly in Long-term Ecological Research Sites. This potentially undermines the quality of research and the accuracy of predictions about biological species shifts in a changing environment. The ICES Working Group for Phytoplankton and Microbial Ecology conducted...

Temporal and spatial variation in temperature experienced by macrofauna at main endeavour Hydrothermal vent field ArchiMer
Lee, Raymond W.; Robert, Katleen; Matabos, Marjolaine; Bates, Amanda E.; Juniper, S. Kim.
A significant focus of hydrothermal vent ecological studies has been to understand how species cope with various stressors through physiological tolerance and biochemical resistance. Yet, the environmental conditions experienced by vent species have not been well characterized. This objective requires continuous observations over time intervals that can capture environmental variability at scales that are relevant to animals. We used autonomous temperature logger arrays (four roughly parallel linear arrays of 12 loggers spaced every 10–12 cm) to study spatial and temporal variations in the thermal regime experienced by hydrothermal vent macrofauna at a diffuse flow vent. Hourly temperatures were recorded over eight months from 2010 to 2011 at Grotto vent...

Large and local-scale influences on physical and chemical characteristics of coastal waters of Western Europe during winter ArchiMer
Treguer, Paul; Goberville, Eric; Barrier, Nicolas; L'Helguen, Stephane; Morin, Pascal; Bozec, Yann; Rimmelin-maury, Peggy; Czamanski, Marie; Grossteffan, Emilie; Cariou, Thierry; Repecaud, Michel; Quemener, Loic.
There is now a strong scientific consensus that coastal marine systems of Western Europe are highly sensitive to the combined effects of natural climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. However, it still remains challenging to assess the spatial and temporal scales at which climate influence operates. While large-scale hydro-climatic indices, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) or the East Atlantic Pattern (EAP) and the weather regimes such as the Atlantic Ridge (AR), are known to be relevant predictors of physical processes, changes in coastal waters can also be related to local hydro-meteorological and geochemical forcing. Here, we study the temporal variability of physical and chemical characteristics of coastal waters located at...

Metabarcoding on planktonic larval stages: an efficient approach for detecting and investigating life cycle dynamics of benthic aliens ArchiMer
Couton, Marjorie; Comtet, Thierry; Le Cam, Sabrina; Corre, Erwan; Viard, Frédérique.
High-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies offer new promise to support surveillance programs targeting marine non-indigenous species (NIS). Metabarcoding might surpass traditional monitoring methods, for example through its ability to detect rare species, a key feature in early detection of NIS. Another interest of this approach is the identification of organisms difficult to identify based on morphology only (e.g., early developmental stages), making it relevant in the context of management programs. Because many marine benthic NIS have a biphasic benthopelagic life cycle, targeting their pelagic larval stages in zooplankton may allow early detection and assessment of their establishment and potential spread. We illustrate this approach with an...

Combined effects of exploitation and temperature on fish stocks in the Northeast Atlantic ArchiMer
Rouyer, Tristan; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Hidalgo, Manuel; Stenseth, Nils C..
Fish stock fluctuations are affected by two potentially confounding forces: the removal of individuals by fisheries and climatic variations affecting the productivity of fish populations. Disentangling the relative importance of these forces has thus been a question of primary importance for fisheries management and conservation. Through the analysis of long-term time-series for 27 fish stocks from the Northeast Atlantic, the present study shows that the sign and intensity of the effect of temperature on biomass are dependent on the geographical location: the stocks located at the southernmost and northernmost latitudes of our study displayed stronger associations with temperature than the stocks located in the middle range of latitudes. As a consequence,...
