TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY AND IMPLEMENTATION COSTS OF SHEEP IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM REA
Bezerra,Alan C.; Pandorfi,Héliton; Carvalho,Francisco F. R. E; Guiselini,Cristiane; Lima,Thiago A. S. de.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to characterize the efficiency and convenience of sheep identification system and its implementation costs. Therefore we quantified the time for implementation, reading and data transfer to a management program in a manual system (earrings) and electronic system (subcutaneous transponders). Furthermore, it was evaluated the implementation costs of the traceability systems by analysis of the absorption costs and comparison between systems. It was observed that the implementation time for the manual system was shorter (2.2 s animal−1) than the electronic system (4.67 s animal−1). As for reading time, the electronic system presented shorter time (2.89 s animal−1) than the manual system (4.67 s animal−1). As for the...

DEVELOPMENT OF A TRACEABILITY MODEL APPLIED TO GOAT AND SHEEP MEAT PRODUCTION REA
Bezerra,Alan C.; Pandorfi,Héliton; Gama,Rafael M.; Carvalho,Francisco F. R. de; Guiselini,Cristiane.
ABSTRACT: The goat and sheep meat producer chain has developed in last years, thus, it is imperative to organize and structure the supply chain and to adopt reliable policies for products' traceability, as a tool to achieve these requirements. The study aimed to make a management program with a traceability model for goat and sheep meat production, with emphasis on ensuring product origin and management practices' transparency at the animal production unit. For this purpose, it was made a reference model in order to emit an origin certificate which, in turn, provides specific information concerning the final product from each unit. Secondly, the program was developed using Hipertext Preprocessor (PHP) technology and as for the Database Management System,...

The increasing global consumption of seafood has led to increased trade among nations, accompanied by mislabeling and fraudulent practices that have rendered authentication crucial. The multi-isotope ratio analysis is considered as applicable tool for evaluating geographical authentications but requires information and experience to select target elements such as isotopes, through a distinction method based on differences in habitat and physiology due to origin. The present study examined recombination conditions of multi-elements that facilitated geographically distinct classifications of the clams to sort out appropriate elements. Briefly, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) analysis was performed according to several combinations of five stable isotopes...

Phenolic Profiling for Traceability of Vanilla x tahitensis ArchiMer
Busconi, Matteo; Lucini, Luigi; Soffritti, Giovanna; Bernardi, Jamila; Bernardo, Letizia; Brunschwig, Christel; Lepers-andrzejewski, Sandra; Raharivelomanana, Phila; Fernandez, Jose A..
Vanilla is a flavoring recovered from the cured beans of the orchid genus Vanilla. Vanilla xtahitensis is traditionally cultivated on the islands of French Polynesia, where vanilla vines were first introduced during the nineteenth century and, since the 1960s, have been introduced to other Pacific countries such as Papua New Guinea (PNG), cultivated and sold as "Tahitian vanilla," although both sensory properties and aspect are different. From an economic point of view, it is important to ensure V. xtahitensis traceability and to guarantee that the marketed product is part of the future protected designation of the origin "Tahitian vanilla" (PDO), currently in progress in French Polynesia. The application of metabolomics, allowing the detection and...

Evaluation, signalling and willingness to pay for traceability. A cross-national comparison ArchiMer
Calvo Dopico, D.; Mendes, R.; Silva, H.a.; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; Pérez-martín, R.; Sotelo, C.g..
This study aims to investigate the benefits associated with traceability and its relationship to quality. Market research has been conducted in Spain, Portugal, France, UK and Germany. The results show that the expected benefits for consumers related to traceability focus on food safety and quality. Relevant information about traceability should focus on the intrinsic quality attributes highly valued by consumers and food safety. Among them, it highlights the origin, the value of which has been highly appreciated by most consumers in different countries. As regards signalling, consumers rate labelling very favourably, which would have to offer all relevant information on the intrinsic quality attributes. The implementation of technology (e.g. QR) could...

Traceability of aquatic animals ArchiMer
Hastein, T; Hill, Bj; Berthe, Franck; Lightner, Dv.
Effective methods of traceability are urgently required for use in research as weil as in different types of aquaculture operations and to control trade in aquatic animais and praducts. In regard to the marking of fish, many different tagging methods have been described and the method to be used depends on the purpose and need for tagging. In contrast, for molluscs and crustaceans, only a few methods of marking such animais have been described, due to the practical difficulties. The authors first describe the different methods for tracing fish and fishery products, by means of external tags, such as Floy tags, Carlin tags and passive integrated transponder tags; chemical marking using inorganic substances su ch as silver nitrate or potassium nitrate,...

Validation of a customized subset of SNPs for sheep breed assignment in Brazil PAB
Paim,Tiago do Prado; McManus,Concepta; Vieira,Fábio Danilo; Oliveira,Stanley Robson de Medeiros; Facó,Olivardo; Azevedo,Hymerson Costa; Araújo,Adriana Mello de; Moraes,José Carlos Ferrugem; Yamagishi,Michel Eduardo Beleza; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Caetano,Alexandre Rodrigues; Paiva,Samuel Rezende.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the usefulness of a subset of 18 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for breed identification of Brazilian Crioula, Morada Nova (MN), and Santa Inês (SI) sheep. Data of 588 animals were analyzed with the Structure software. Assignments higher than 90% confidence were observed in 82% of the studied samples. Most of the low-value assignments were observed in MN and SI breeds. Therefore, although there is a high reliability in this subset of 18 SNPs, it is not enough for an unequivocal assignment of the studied breeds, mainly of hair breeds. A more precise panel still needs to be developed for the widespread use in breed assignment.

Intra and Inter organisational determinants of electronic-based traceability adoption: evidences from the French agri-food industry AgEcon
Galliano, Danielle; Orozco, L..
Traceability, the ability to trace the origin of products throughout the supply chain, has become an instrument to assure food quality and safety in agri-food chains. This process is organized within both institutional and market constraints, yet it integrates also a technological sphere marked by the unprecedented development of information and communication technologies. This paper analyses the factors influencing firms’ behaviour, with regards to adopting electronic-based traceability, in the French agri-food industry. These factors (microeconomic determinants) related to firms’ internal characteristics and the factors related to their environment. We use data from the ICT and Electronic Commerce survey from 2002, carried out by the French National...

Food Safety in Agricultural International Trade: The Spanish experience in Mediterranean products AgEcon
Briz, Julian; de Felipe, Isabel; Garca, Marian.
Food international trade between developed and developing countries is increasing as a consequence of the worldwide liberalization movement. Tariffs and technical barriers are decreasing and many exporters in developing countries are ready to supply to developed markets. However there are non-tariff barriers, some of them related to food safety. The goal of this paper is to analyse how some food safety and quality control measures may be overcome by Less Developed Countries following some indications, such as a benchmarking analysis. The identification of “best practice” in operating firms may be useful to others. We describe the evolution of international trade, the situation at destination and origin markets through the international channel. It is...

THE CHANGING FACE OF THE U.S. GRAIN SYSTEM: DIFFERENTIATION AND IDENTITY PRESERVATION TRENDS AgEcon
Elbehri, Aziz.
This report examines current trends in the U.S. grain industry. Many identity preservation(IP) grain systems have emerged recently, driven by a confluence of supply and demand factors. IP grain requirements for specific production protocols, marketing channels, and quality assurance depend on whether the crops are trait-specific, non-GM (genetically modified), organic, or pharmaceutical. Cost structures vary according to the relative importance of segregation and risk management. High information management, greater market coordination, and frequent reliance on contracts characterize IP grains. IP grain markets are also inherently riskier, with volatile supply, inelastic demand, and fluctuating price premiums. Increasing grain differentiation is altering...

This article investigates how the...

How consumers link traceability to food quality and safety: An international investigation AgEcon
van Rijswijk, Wendy; Frewer, Lynn J..
It is not yet understood whether the implementation of traceability systems can contribute towards restoring consumer confidence in food quality and safety, one of the goals of the European Food Law. To date, little is known about how consumers perceive the role and potential impact of traceability within the supply chain. This paper aims to provide insight into how traceability information can offer guarantees of food quality and safety, and contribute towards increased consumer confidence. Data, collected in four EU countries, examines salient cognitions and attitudes that underpin consumer beliefs about product traceability that will influence their decision making. It will link traceability- related food attributes to perceived benefits (in terms of...

Firms' strategies and voluntary traceability: an empirical analysis in Italian food chains AgEcon
Stranieri, Stefanella; Banterle, Alessandro.
In international food markets, voluntary traceability systems have increased their role in guaranteeing high safety and quality standards for the consumer. Such systems are also among the strategies firms employ to differentiate products and strengthen competitive advantage in both the national and international market. Voluntary traceability has significant implications on the organisation of economic relationships within food supply chains. This paper focuses on this aspect and analyses the effects of voluntary traceability on vertical co- ordination using a transaction cost perspective. The analysis makes reference to the Italian situation where the national standard organisation has introduced standard rules for voluntary traceability (UNI 10939; ISO...

TRACEABILITY AND CERTIFICATION IN MEAT SUPPLY CHAINS AgEcon
Meuwissen, Miranda P.M.; Velthuis, Annet G.J.; Hogeveen, Henk; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
Food safety problems such as the BSE and dioxin crises focused attention on traceability systems and the certification of such systems. This study analyzes the status and perspectives of traceability systems and certification schemes, and reviews their potential costs and benefits. Results indicate that traceability and certification in meat supply chains comprise a very dynamic area with an increasing impact. Necessary transparency, control of livestock epidemics, increasing due diligence, and a declining role for governments are critical factors. Findings also reveal there is a general focus on the technical characteristics of traceability and certification, and there is a lack of economic considerations. Therefore, specific topics are emphasized for an...

Market Differentiation Potential of Country-of-origin, Quality and Traceability Labeling AgEcon
Verbeke, Wim; Roosen, Jutta.
Product labeling has gained considerable attention recently, as a means to both provide product-specific information and reduce quality uncertainty faced by consumers, as well as from a regulatory point of view. This article focuses on whether and to what extent origin, quality and traceability labeling is an appropriate way to differentiate food products. The focus is on fresh meat and fresh fish, two mainly generic food product categories with a high degree of credence character. Insights into the potential for market differentiation through origin, quality and traceability labeling are provided and discussed using primary data collected during the period 2000-2005 by means of four consumer surveys. In general, direct indications of quality, including...

Cost of GMO-related co-existence and traceability systems in food production in Germany AgEcon
Menrad, Klaus; Gabriel, Andreas; Zapilko, Marina.
In contrast to the increasing use of GM plants in world-wide agriculture, the acceptance of GM food is still low in the European Union (EU). In order to ensure freedom of choice for consumers and users of GM and non-GM products, GM food and feed products have to be labeled in case a tolerance threshold of 0.9 % is exceeded for EU authorized GMOs. This paper aims to quantify the cost of traceability and co-existence systems for GM food from the seed to the food level for sugar, wheat starch and rapeseed oil for human consumption in Germany respecting the 0.9 % threshold for labelling of GM food. The cost calculation for traceability and co-existence measures follows the principle of aggregating all incurred cost on the different levels of the value chain...

The Role of Public-Private Partnerships and Collective Action in Ensuring Smallholder Participation in High Value Fruit and Vegetable Supply Chains AgEcon
Narrod, Clare A.; Roy, Devesh; Okello, Julius Juma; Avendano, Belem; Rich, Karl M..
Many developing countries have moved into the production of non-traditional agricultural products to diversify their exports and increase foreign currency earnings. Accessing developed country markets and urban domestic markets requires meeting the food safety requirements due to several demand and supply side factors. Food retailers have developed protocols relating to pesticide residues, field and packinghouse operations, and traceability. In this changing scenario where food safety requirements are getting increasingly stringent, there are worries regarding the livelihood of the poor since companies that establish production centers in LDCs might exclude them. Poor producers face problems of how to produce safe food, be recognized as producing safe...

Meat Slaughter and Processing Plants’ Traceability Levels Evidence From Iowa AgEcon
Bulut, Harun; Lawrence, John D..
In the United States (U.S.), there is no uniform traceability regulation across food sector. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented one-step back and one-step forward traceability over the industries under its jurisdiction. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which oversees meat, poultry and egg production, requires some record keeping as part of food safety regulation. Particularly, a two-part-system has developed; live animal traceability and meat traceability with slaughter and processing plants in between. This paper studies the question of whether (and if so how) meat plants’ traceability levels vary with respect to the following factors; product specific (credence versus experience and search attributes, branded versus commodity meat,...

Meat Slaughter and Processing Plants’ Traceability Levels: Evidence From Iowa AgEcon
Bulut, Harun; Lawrence, John D..
Based on an econometric analysis of the data obtained from a survey of meat plants ( ) in Iowa in summer 2007, this paper identifies the factors impacting the meat plants’ voluntary adoption of forward and backward traceability activities. The results suggest that the ownership type (corporate versus independent) and operations type (slaughtering versus not) matter rather than the size and meat type produced (beef, pork, or poultry) as suggested in the previous surveys. Furthermore, food safety activities appear to be complementary to traceability activities. The findings may assist ongoing regulatory efforts in implementing traceability in U.S. in the near future.

TRACEABILITY IN THE U.S. FOOD SUPPLY: ECONOMIC THEORY AND INDUSTRY STUDIES AgEcon
Golan, Elise H.; Krissoff, Barry; Kuchler, Fred; Calvin, Linda; Nelson, Kenneth E.; Price, Gregory K..
This investigation into the traceability baseline in the United States finds that private sector food firms have developed a substantial capacity to trace. Traceability systems are a tool to help firms manage the flow of inputs and products to improve efficiency, product differentiation, food safety, and product quality. Firms balance the private costs and benefits of traceability to determine the efficient level of traceability. In cases of market failure, where the private sector supply of traceability is not socially optimal, the private sector has developed a number of mechanisms to correct the problem, including contracting, third-party safety/quality audits, and industry-maintained standards. The best-targeted government policies for strengthening...
