Analysis of the theory of intermediaries and firm in rural socialized service organizations AgEcon
Li, Wu; Hu, Zhen-peng.
We use Sperber's intermediairies and the firm theory to analyze the rural socialized service organizations. By studying the case of the melon association in Beihe Village of Uqiao Township in Beijing, we find that the basic existing objective of this association is to save transaction cost. The theoretical research and case analysis results show that the dispersed peasants are unable to solve the contradiction between small-scale production and large-scale market. However, the rural socialized service organizations, the purpose of which is to serve the benefit of the peasants, can save the transaction cost of peasants and safeguard the economic interests of the peasants.

Price Paradox and Strategic Choice of "Vegetable Basket" in China AgEcon
Li, Wu.
By using the analysis method of game theory, this paper analyzes the phenomenon of price paradox of vegetable basket in China and its reason as follows: me price paradox of vegetable basket in China is that if the vegetable is cheap, it will harm farmers, and if the vegetable is expensive, it will harm people; high-cost logistics, low negotiation status of vegetable growers and cooperation predicament are responsible for price paradox. Based on the theoretical basis of strategic choice-theory of intermediaries, it indicates that the intermediaries can realize effective transaction and save transaction cost. The strategic choice of solving price paradox of vegetable basket is put forward as follows, support vegetable growers' cooperatives, reduce...

Research on Contractual Model Selection of Farmers’ Cooperatives—a Case Study of Production and Marketing Cooperative of Sweet Pomegranate in Mengzi, Yunnan AgEcon
Fang, Kai; Liu, Jie; Chen, Xin-hua.
In the perspective of new institutional economics, we regard farmers’ cooperatives as a “contractual set” integrating a series of long-term contractual relations, and transform the selection problem of organization forms into selection problem of contractual model within organization. By the theoretical framework of Transaction Cost Economics, we analyze the formation mechanism and determinant factors of contractual model of different farmers’ cooperatives and conduct case study on Production and Marketing Cooperative of Sweet Pomegranate in Mengzi, Yunnan. The results show that selecting contractual forms of cooperatives is the result of weighing many factors; new organization model or contractual arrangement is complementary to the former system...

Measuring Market Integration in the Presence of Threshold Effect: The Case of Bangladesh Rice Markets AgEcon
Alam, Mohammad Jahangir; McKenzie, Andrew M.; Buysse, Jeroen; Begum, Ismat Ara; Wailes, Eric J.; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
Spatial price integration among five major Bangladesh rice markets is examined in the presence of threshold effects to account for the impact of transaction costs in the price adjustment process. Hansen and Seo (2002) threshold cointegration tests and threshold vector error correction models confirm the presence of threshold effects. Results highlight the importance of directing policy goals towards reducing transaction cost to engender greater pricing efficiency in Bangladesh rice markets.

Applying Transaction Cost Economics: A Note on Biomass Supply Chains AgEcon
Altman, Ira J.; Sanders, Dwight R.; Boessen, Christian R..
Agricultural supply chains, especially those from producer to first handler, are relatively mature institutions. While agricultural economists often observe the evolution of marketing structures in developing nations, it is a rare opportunity to research a developing market within North America. The emerging bioenergy industry—which relies on non-food crops such as straw—provides the potential to research and potentially impact the development of new supply chains. Here, we briefly review the literature related to biomass supply chains, pose a transaction cost approach to studying their development, and then discuss the procurement strategies of an industry leader: the Iogen Corporation.

The Use of Markets To Increase Private Investment in Environmental Stewardship AgEcon
Ribaudo, Marc; Hansen, LeRoy T.; Hellerstein, Daniel; Greene, Catherine R..
U.S. farmers and ranchers produce a wide variety of commodities for food, fuel, and fiber in response to market signals. Farms also contain significant amounts of natural resources that can provide a host of environmental services, including cleaner air and water, flood control, and improved wildlife habitat. Environmental services are often valued by society, but because they are a public good—that is, people can obtain them without paying for them—farmers and ranchers may not benefit financially from producing them. As a result, farmers and ranchers under-provide these services. This report explores the use of market mechanisms, such as emissions trading and eco-labels, to increase private investment in environmental stewardship. Such investments could...

The Choice of Land Tenure Contracts in the Presence of Transaction Costs in Rice Farming in West Java, Indonesia. AgEcon
Jamal, Erizal; Mardiharini, Maesti.
This study assessed the preference for and efficiency of land tenure contract arrangements in rice farming in West Java, Indonesia. Specifically, it examined the transaction costs associated with land tenure contracts, the land tenure contract preference, the efficiency of land tenure contracts, and the policy agenda to address the problems of land tenure efficiency. Three types of land tenure contracts were considered: sharecropping, fixed rental and mortgage. Farm plot data were used to econometrically investigate whether transaction cost had an effect on the choice of land tenure contracts and on the efficiency of land tenure contracts. The transaction cost coefficient of 0.097 (significant of 1% level) in the choice of land tenure indicates that as...

Voluntary Traceability and Transaction Costs: An Empirical Analysis in the Italian Meat Processing Supply Chain AgEcon
Banterle, Alessandro; Stranieri, Stefanella; Baldi, Lucia.
This paper analyses voluntary traceability effects on the coordination of the food supply chain from the transaction cost perspective. The analysis concerns Italian firms and makes particular reference to the meat sector. A survey was conducted by questionnaire to assess the changes in key transaction factors and costs after the introduction of traceability. The results underline an increase in the degree of human, material and site asset specificity, and reveal a reduction in the degree of uncertainty in transactions. Growth in some transaction costs related to monitoring is also observed. Factorial and cluster analysis were used to underline the different organisational solutions of the firms.

Measuring Market Integration in Mozambican Maize Markets: A Threshold Vector Error Correction Approach AgEcon
Alemu, Zerihun Gudeta; Biacuana, G.R..
The primary objective of this research was to measure the extent of market integration between major surplus and deficit maize markets in Mozambique namely, Chimoio-Maputo, Chimoio-Beira, Ribaue-Nampula, and Mocuba-Nampula. To achieve this objective, Threshold Vector Autoregressive models were applied. The choice of the model was motivated by unobservable transaction costs and the import ant influence that their presence may exert on equilibrium spatial price relationships. The following are some of the major findings of the study. Firstly, threshold values (i.e. estimates of transaction costs) are found to be correlated positively with distance and inversely with the condition of the roads connecting markets. Secondly, market integration analysis revealed...

Harvesting the Greenhouse through Altered Land Management: Economic Potential and Market Design Challenges AgEcon
Schneider, Uwe A.; McCarl, Bruce A.; Woodward, Richard T..
An Agricultural Sector Model is used to determine the economic potential of agricultural greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies within hypothetical emission mitigation markets. For a complete set of agricultural land management decisions, emissions and emission reductions of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are accounted for and simultaneously subjected to a wide range of carbon prices. The estimated, competitive emission abatement supply functions for major agricultural strategies are contrasted with two other commonly used measures of abatement potential: single strategy economic potential and technical potential. Specific agricultural production and market characteristics that further impact agriculture's mitigation potential are...

A Two-Stage Value Chain Model for Vegetable Marketing Chain Efficiency Evaluation: A Transaction Cost Approach AgEcon
Lu, Hualiang.
We applied a two-stage value chain model to investigate the effects of input application and occasional transaction costs on vegetable marketing chain efficiencies with a farm household-level data set. In the first stage, the production efficiencies with the combination of resource endowments, capital and managerial inputs, and production techniques were evaluated; then at the second stage, the marketing technical efficiencies were determined under the marketing value of the vegetables for three typical marketing chains in Nanjing area, P.R. China. The impacts of the transaction costs to the supply chain technical efficiency both at the production and marketing stages were examined by using Tobit model. Study showed that transaction costs significantly...

Quality and governance mode choice: a transaction cost approach to the wine industry AgEcon
Fernandez-Olmos, Marta; Rosell-Martinez, Jorge; Espitia-Escuer, Manuel Antonio.
We analyze the relationship between product quality and governance mode choice using the results of a survey of DOC Rioja wineries. Wineries that produce high-quality wines are more likely to vertically integrate than are wineries that produce low-quality wines. Consistent with Transaction Cost Economics, we find evidence that asset specificity and uncertainty are important determinants of vertical integration. Finally, the size of the winery is also an important factor that affects governance mode choice in viticulture.

ANÁLISE DAS TRANSAÇÕES NA CADEIA PRODUTIVA DE ENERGIA DE BIOMASSA DE ORIGEM FLORESTAL AgEcon
Simioni, Flavio Jose; Hoeflich, Vitor Afonso; Siqueira, Elisabete Stradiotto.
The aim of this paper was to analyze the characteristics of the transactions between economic agents to identify their attributes and to determine their impacts on the governance structure of the forest biomass energy production chain in Lages, Santa Catarina state. The Economic Transaction Cost (ETC) was used as theoretical support. Fifteen entrepreneurs or company directors were interviewed to identify and characterize the transactions between the chain’s segments and to analyze the governance structure adopted by the agents. The companies involved in this study are located in twenty four municipal districts in the region. Analysis of the transactions between the agents demonstrated an increasing search for contracts, determined mainly by the need to...

The Role of Income Diversification, Transaction Cost and Production Risk in Fertilizer Market Participation AgEcon
Olale, Edward; Cranfield, John A.L..
Past agricultural input market participation studies have generally ignored the joint influence of income diversification, transaction cost and production risk on input market participation decisions. This study develops an analytical framework that jointly incorporates the three factors and other household factors in farmer-fertilizer market participation decisions. The framework is then tested by analyzing the entry and intensity decisions of fertilizer market participation in semi-arid eastern Kenya, at the farm level. Transaction costs and production risk negatively influence both the entry and intensity decisions, while income diversification positively influences the entry decisions. These results are confirmed by nested likelihood ratio tests which...

Institutional analysis for nitrogen pollution abatement in a Waikato river sub-catchment in New Zealand AgEcon
Ramilan, Thiagarajah; Scrimgeour, Frank G.; Marsh, Dan.
Nitrogen levels in water resources in the Waikato region are increasing, mainly as a result of non-point source pollution from agricultural activities. Non-point pollution management is a complex issue requiring sufficient information and appropriate institutions. This paper considers the environmental policy literature and analyse how institutions, contract design, and monitoring and transaction costs in the presence of farm heterogeneity encourage optimal abatement. The analysis identifies the key institutional issues to be addressed in the design of appropriate policy measures to address water quality in Waikato river sub-catchment.

MENSURAÇÃO E ANÁLISE DE CUSTOS DE TRANSAÇÃO ARCADOS POR PRODUTORES DE LEITE NOS MERCADOS FORMAL E INFORMAL DA REGIÃO DE SÃO CARLOS, SP AgEcon
Bankuti, Ferenc Istvan; Souza Filho, Hildo Meirelles de; Bankuti, Sandra Mara Schiavi.
The analysis and measurement of production and transaction costs is an important tool in guiding decisions and in comprehending the behavior of the agents in a particular institutional environment. Although production costs have been widely studied in the literature, transaction costs have not been so extensively analyzed, especially empirically. Based on 125 questionnaires and on theoretical review, this work presents an analysis and a measurement of the transaction costs for two groups of rural producers in the region of São Carlos, in São Paulo state. The groups were defined using cluster analysis, considering the amount of milk sold in the informal market as the analysis variable. The theoretical reference includes the New Institutional Economics and...

Financial risk monitoring and transaction costs in coffee & soybean trading companies and processors Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Bignotto,Edson Costa; Azevedo Filho,Adriano.
This study characterizes the use of risk monitoring mechanisms by coffee and soybean trading and processing companies. It also investigates the role these mechanisms play in the mitigation of certain transaction costs associated to bounded rationality, information asymmetry, and business opportunism in negotiations involving derivatives. The results presented are based on literature and original research, which consisted of interviews with 19 coffee and soybean trading and processing company agents that deal with the management and execution of derivatives trades. The interviews suggest that the interest in formal risk monitoring mechanisms depends strongly on the organizational structure of the business. In family businesses, in which the owner...
