Selection of finfish species for aquaculture development in Martinique (FWI). ArchiMer
Thouard, Emmanuel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Marion, J.
Since 1981, in Martinique, a programme of selection of fishes suitable for aquaculture has been conducted. Zootechnical and socio-economical constraints have led to the choice of three species, endemic and exotic: the palometa (Trachinotus goodei ), the red drum (Sciaenops ocellata ) and the red florida hybrid (Oreochromis sp.).

Production of live prey for marine fish larvae ArchiMer
Kraul, S.
Tropical marine fish larvae vary in their requirements for live planktonic food. Selection of live prey species for culture depends on larval size and larval tolerance of water quality. This report describes some of the cultured prey species, and their uses and limits as effective food for fish larvae. Methods are presented for the culture of phytoplankton, rotifers, copepods, and other live feeds.

Hormone-induced spawning of cultured tropical finfishes. ArchiMer
Marte, C.
Commercially important tropical freshwater and marine finfishes are commonly spawned with pituitary homogenate, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and semi-purified fish gonadotropins. These preparations are often administered in two doses, a lower priming dose followed a few hours later by a higher resolving dose. Interval between the first and second injections may vary from 3-24 hours depending on the species. Variable doses are used even for the same species and may be due to variable potencies of the gonadotropin preparations.

Snook (Centropomidae) and grouper (Serranidae) mariculture in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Basin ArchiMer
Roberts Jr, D.
Centropomidae and Serranidae, sometimes collectively misnamed "sea basses", are suitable for aquaculture in pens, ponds, and raceways around the tropical and subtropical latitudes of the world. Western Atlantic Ocean species were recently considered for farming. South Florida, Mexico, Central and South America and the Antilles areas of the Caribbean Basin have extensive areas suitable for farming groupers and snook. Principal species of interest are the common snook (Centropomus undecimalis ), the fat snook (C. parallelus ), the Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus ), Black seabass (Centropristis striatus ), Gag (Mycteroperca microlepis ), and jewfish (E. itajara ).

Trophic ecology influence on metal bioaccumulation in marine fish: Inference from stable isotope and fatty acid analyses ArchiMer
Le Croizier, Gael; Schaal, Gauthier; Gallon, Regis; Fall, Massal; Le Grand, Fabienne; Munaron, Jean-marie; Rouget, Marie-laure; Machu, Eric; Le Loc'H, Francois; Lae, Raymond; De Morais, Luis Tito.
The link between trophic ecology and metal accumulation in marine fish species was investigated through a multi-tracers approach combining fatty acid (FA) and stable isotope (SI) analyses on fish from two contrasted sites on the coast of Senegal, one subjected to anthropogenic metal effluents and another one less impacted. The concentrations of thirteen trace metal elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, U, and Zn) were measured in fish liver. Individuals from each site were classified into three distinct groups according to their liver FA and muscle SI compositions. Trace element concentrations were tested between groups revealing that bioaccumulation of several metals was clearly dependent on the trophic guild of fish. Furthermore,...

Use of functional traits to assess changes in stream fish assemblages across a habitat gradient Neotropical Ichthyology
Ribeiro,Mariela Domiciano; Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Casatti,Lilian.
Abstract Functional traits are important for understanding the links between species occurrence and environmental conditions. Identifying these links makes it possible to predict changes in species composition within communities under specific environmental conditions. We used functional traits related to habitat use and trophic ecology in order to assess the changes in fish community composition between streams with varying habitat structure. The relationship between the species traits and habitat characteristics was analyzed using an RLQ ordination analysis. Although species were widely distributed in habitats with different structures, physical conditions did favor some species based on their functional characteristics. Eight functional traits were...

Utilisation des farines végétales dans l'alimentation des poissons d'élevage en milieu tropical. OceanDocs
Blé, M.C.; Otchoumou, K.A.; Alla, Y.L.; Kaushik, S.J..

OceanDocs
Parra, A..

The role of the Yala swamp lakes in conservation of Lake Victoria region haplochromine cichlids: evidence from molecular genetic and trophic ecology studies OceanDocs
Abila, R.; Salzburger, W.; Ndonga, M.F.; Owiti, D.O.; Barluenga, M..
Lake Kanyaboli (Kenya), a satellite lake of Lake Victoria, has been suggested as a potential refugium for haplochromine cichlids that have gone extinct in Lake Victoria. We employed mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite DNA molecular markers as well as feeding ecology studies to re- evaluate the evolutionary and ecological significance of Lake Kanyaboli haplochromines. The mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite markers revealed high genetic diversity in the endangered Xystichromis phytophagus and also the presence of mtDNA haplotypes that may have either gone extinct in Lake Victoria or have arisen in situ. Lake Kanyaboli thus acts as a ‘genetic reservoir’ for the Lake Victoria species flock. Gut content analysis revealed six trophic groups among the six...

Efficacy of clove oil as anesthetic in handling and transportation of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Actinopterygii: Cichlidae) juveniles Rev. Bras. Zool.
Simões,Larissa N.; Lombardi,Danielle C.; Gomide,Andrea T. M.; Gomes,Levy C..
This work evaluated the efficiency of clove oil as anaesthetic in handling and transportation of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). In the first experiment, safety concentrations of clove oil were assessed by measuring induction times to anaesthesia. The second experiment evaluated exposure times to anaesthetic. Clove oil efficiency during transportation was evaluated in a 24 h experiment using three concentrations of the anaesthetic (0, 9, and 18 mg.L-1). The most appropriate clove oil concentration to induce surgical anaesthesia was 90 mg.L-1. To biometry or other brief handling, the recommended concentration is 50-60 mg.L-1 as it provides fast recovery. Maximum anaesthesia time should be 10 min. The mortality rate of fish transported...
