Phytoplankton flora of two rivers in Southeast Brazil: Paraibuna and Pomba Rivers, Minas Gerais Rev. Bras. Bot.
Soares,Maria Carolina S.; Sophia,Maria da Graça; Huszar,Vera L. de M..
This work is a survey of the phytoplankton communities of the Paraibuna and Pomba Rivers. It aims is to contribute to the existing albeit scarce knowledge of the phytoplankton of Minas Gerais and of lotic phytoplankton in general. The results are based on 32 samples collected from Paraibuna and Pomba Rivers, in Minas Gerais State, during the dry (July and August, 2001) and rainy seasons (February 2002). Forty-eight taxa were identified, 20 from Paraibuna River and 28 from Pomba River, thirty-eight of which are new records for Minas Gerais State. The phytoplankton community of Paraibuna River was strongly influenced by a reservoir close to its source, thus the occurrence of lentic species of cyanobacteria and desmids. However, the phytoplankton community of...

River damming affects seedling communities of a floodplain forest in the Central Amazon Acta Botanica
Rocha,Maíra da; Feitosa,Yuri Oliveira; Wittmann,Florian; Piedade,Maria Teresa Fernandez; Resende,Angélica Faria de; Assis,Rafael Leandro de.
ABSTRACT The flood pulse of black water rivers in the Amazon basin determines the composition of species along the flood gradient in igapó forests. The Balbina dam, built on the Uatumã River, has altered the flood pulse and caused changes in the floristic composition of adult trees throughout the downstream area. There is a lack of studies on how communities of seedlings in igapó forests respond to changes in the flood pulse. This study investigates the response of seedling communities in the igapó forest downstream the Balbina dam and compares it with two pristine areas. The areas were sampled with transects of 1x25 m within 36 plots (25x25 m) along the flood gradient. Richness and dominance were calculated by simple regression and ordination analyses....

Assessing of biotic integrity of the fish community in a heavily impacted segment of a tropical river in Brazil BABT
Pinto,Benjamin Carvalho Teixeira; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
A index of biotic integrity (IBI) was applied to assess the ecological health at seven sites of ca. 338 km extension of the Paraíba do Sul river, in bracketing a large urban-industrial complex. The aim was to evaluate the index response to changes in environmental quality during two seasons (winter/dry versus. summer/wet). Eight metrics were selected to IBI in three categories: 1) species richness and habitat composition; 2) indicator species; and 3) trophic structure. The IBI, based on the least impacted regional condition, showed the highest value at the most upstream site (Queluz=km 0) - Acceptable, then decreasing downstream and reaching the lowest record at Volta Redonda (km 125) - Impacted; afterwards there was an increasing quality toward the most...

Prediction of colonization by macrophytes in the Yaciretá reservoir of the Paraná River (Argentina and Paraguay) BJB
NEIFF,J. J.; POI DE NEIFF,A. S. G.; PATIÑO,C. A. E.; BASTERRA DE CHIOZZI,I..
The potential colonization by anchored plants (PCAP) and the potential areas for initial colonization of free floating plants were estimated during the early filling phase for the Yaciretá reservoir. In order to obtain the PCAP, the observed maximum depth of colonization of the anchored macrophytes before impoundment and the hypsographic curves were used. The species inhabiting the pre-impoundment area were classified according to the different bioforms before the inclussion in the analysis. The areal extent of PCAP (from depths between 0-4 m) could reach 275 km² at 76 m above sea level (current water level), whereas at 82 m above sea level (final filling level) the littoral zone will be increased by about 21.5%. The potential area for geophytes was...
