Total bacterial numbers were reduced three to four log cycles upon exposure of shell stock oysters to ionising radiation (60Co) at 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 kiloGrays.Vibrio vulnificus was detected in the non-irradiated control shell stock oysters, however, it was not detected in any of the shell stock after 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 kiloGrays of exposure. The shelflife of irradiated shell stock oysters and depurated oysters was also compared. Fifty percent of the irradiated oysters were dead within 12, 10 and 7 days at 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 kiloGrays of exposure, respectively. In contrast, fifty percent of the depurated oysters were dead after 31 days. Cultures of virulent and avirulent Vibrio vulnificus in phosphate buffered saline were quite radiosensitive as no colony... |

Oyster landings in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay have declined by more than 50fold since the early part of the century, despite intensive management efforts. The annual shell repletion program is the most critical programmatic element to effect recovery of the ailing Eastern oyster Crassotrea virginica stock and fishery. The overall efficacy of shell repletion management depends primarily on the success of spat settlement on the planted shell, and furthermore on their survival rate. The Operations Research techniques and mathematical programming developed by Rothschild et al. (1991) attempt to maximize spat recruitment to the oyster stock subject to a series of operational constraints. Allocation and timing of shell deployment are the most... |

The oyster population in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay has declined b y more than 38-fold since the early part of the century. Although the effects of fishing have been implicated, the decline has been attributed primarily to water quality and recently oyster disease. The decline has also been thought to have affected the biota and chemistry of the Bay. Our analysis provides a quantitative demonstration that the long-term declines are largely the result of habitat loss related to over fishing early in the century, stock over fishing, early in the century' through the recent times. Furthermore, the major ecological effects on Chesapeake Bay occurred well-before World War 1/, before industrialization and the prevalence of disease |

Gymnodinium breve toxins were exposed to ozone treatment in both extracted form and in intact whole cells. Samples displayed a three log reduction in the total amount for toxin (PbTx-1, -2, -3, -5, -7 and -9) recovered after ten minutes as determined by HPLC analysis. Ozone effectively killed the red tide dinoflagellates when directly contacted ozone and when exposed in a pre-ozonated ASW environment. Both samples, when examined by light microscopy, displayed little difference between the direct and indirect ozone treatments. Reduction in toxin levels directly correlated with reduction of toxicity as observed using by a fish (prinodon variegatus) bioassay. |

When President Harry S. Truman issued a proclamation in 1945 that claimed an exclusive right of the United States to exploit the resources of the seabed and subsoil of its continental shelf, he heralded a new era of national interest in the oceans. The American measure set a policy that was quickly followed by many other states of the world, and as a result, the exclusive jurisdiction of coastal states over the resources in their offshore continental shelves has become one of the generally settled issues of international law of the sea. Less clear, however, are the rules that govern the delineation of the boundaries on the shelf between adjacent and opposite states. Different interpretations of rather ambiguous rules has led to friction between several... |

Different Artemia cyst samples harvested from the San Francisco and the San Pablo Bay regions (California, USA), and suspect because of their poor nutritional performance in fish and crustacean farming, have been analyzed for their chlorinated hydrocarbon and fatty acid content. These results have been correlated with survival, growth, and biomass production of larvae of the marine crustacean Mysidopsis bahia Molenock fed those different Artemia in a standard culture test. Differences in chlorinated hydrocarbon content do not correlate with differences in mysid culture performance. Fatty acid profiles reveal three groups of Artemia batches with high, intermediate, and low levels of... |

A tariff-rate quota (TRQ) is a two-tier tariff. The Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture provides for the transformation of remaining import quotas into TRQs in order to eliminate quantity restricting import barriers to trade. However, more often than not are TRQs de-facto-quotas. The profit-maximizing condition for an importer confronted with two differentiated goods under a common quota is derived. The main focus of the present article is the US import regime for cheese which was transformed according to the tariffication process into a TRQ system. Analysis of cheese import quantities shows that this transformation has indeed little changed. Being the only remarkable exception in partially overcoming the import barriers, the case of New Zealand... |

Risk management has become increasingly important in virtually all aspects of the economy, including agriculture. Every country that considers agriculture a strategically important economic sector strives for effective risk management in agriculture. In our study American and European Union farmers’ risk management practices were, based on various surveys, compared. In terms of agricultural risk management, major differences between the USA and the EU were evident, and these derive from different farming cultures, differences in historical evolution, and economic philosophy. This study provides an overview regarding the important similarities and dissimilarities. |
