Background The effects of exposure to copper, during growth, on the production of biomass, total protein, catalase, glutathione-S transferase, glutathione peroxidase, peroxidase, polyphosphate, acid and alkaline phosphatases, ultrastructure and the ability to remove this metal from Aspergillus niger, obtained from caatinga soil, were evaluated. Results All parameters tested were influenced by the concentration of metal in the culture medium. The presence of metal induced high levels of antioxidant enzymes, including lipid peroxidation, thereby revealing the appearance of an oxidative stress response. The variation in polyphosphate levels indicates the participation of the polymer in response to stress induced by copper. The activities of the phosphatases... |

The occurrence of cell reabsorption in the ovaries of queens in several rates of laying eggs, artificially impeded of laying, and in nurse workers, of Apis mellifera (Linnaeus, 1758), was studied with light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Two types of structures were described and named by analogy with vertebrates ovarian structures, as corpus luteus, when resulting from the reabsorption of the follicular cells after ovulation, and corpus atresicus when resulting from total follicular reabsorption at any oocyte developmental stage. These structures have the same morphological characteristics and physiological signification in both castes. The corpus luteus occurrence indicates ovulation and its number is correspondent to the queen's rates... |

Bivalve molluscs possess several types of hemolymph cells (hemocytes), involved in internal defense and other physiological functions. Studies in pathological and experimental conditions have shown their micro- and macrophagic ability. However, the mechanisms of intracellular digestion are incompletely known in these organisms. The lysosomal apparatus of hemocytes was therefore investigated in several species by hydrolase localization with the electron microscope. The cytoplasmic granules of granulocytes displayed a strong acid beta -glycerophosphatase activity. Previous observations had shown that these granules may contain phagocytized material. This indicates that intracellular digestion is achieved in these organelles. Acid beta -glycerophosphatase... |

During the reproductive period, the microscopical observation of Patella coerulea ovary shows some ovogonies forming neets, supported by a conjonctive network, previtellogenic oocytes which leave gradually the conjonctive tissue and vitellogenic oocytes isolated in the acinus lumen. In early stages of previtellogenesis, an important nucleolar activity, caracterised by cloud-shaped or nematosomes and ribonucleoproteinic extrusions in cytoplasm compartment can be observed. At the end of this stage, the oocyte becomes richer in organites, mitochondria, granular endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi. We further notice the outcome of the first vitellin platelets. Production of vitellus is higher as three kinds of vitellus are observed in the following order: dark... |

The study of tinctorial affinities, in vitro behaviour and ultrastructure of the hemocytes of Pinna nobilis allows us to group them into two main families: basophilic, neutrophilic and acidophilic granulocytes; hyalinocytes, three categories can be distinguished among these cells: small hyalinocytes, hyalinocytes containing smooth endoplasmic reticulum and the macrophage population. The hemocytes participate in the regulation of metabolism by the storage and degradation of glycogen. They contribute to the detoxification process by the sequestration of mineral elements in their lysosomes. Their role in antibacterial defense is suggested by their bacterian phagocytic activity. |

The spermatozoon of Pecten maximus is of the primitive type usually associated with species having external fertilization or emitting the sperm in the water. The size of the nucleus is reduced. The middle piece is similar to that reported for several Bivalves. It contains glycogen. But the spermatozoon of P. maximus exhibits its own ultrastructural characteristics: the short acrosome differs in size, shape, position and ultrastructure or by a combination of these from that of many bivalves. No axial rods was observed in contrast to several species of Mytilidae, Veneridae and Ostreidae. These originalities could go to the genus level. |
