ERRÂNCIAS SERTANEJAS: AS MIGRAÇÕES CAMPO-CIDADE EM MONTES CLAROS NO NORTE DE MINAS GERAIS. AgEcon
Narciso, Andrea Maria; Brandao, Carlos Rodriques B..

Youth Unemployment Challenges in Mining Areas of Ghana AgEcon
Sarfo-Mensah, Paul; Adjaloo, M.K.; Donkor, P..
Ghana, like the rest of West Africa is experiencing tremendous human migration both internally and across international boundaries. Rural-urban migration has assumed uncontrollable dimensions in the sub-region and the social consequences have become major development challenge. In Ghana the mining communities have been at the receiving end for some time now. This study on the Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA) in the Ashanti region of Ghana explores the tremendous socioeconomic changes, especially demographic patterns as a result of the inflows of migrants into the Obuasi Township and its catchment area in search of non existing jobs especially in mining. A major outcome is the serious unemployment problem in the township with all the attendant social vices....

Local Labor Market Conditions and the Jobless Poor: How Much Does Local Job Growth Help in Rural Areas? AgEcon
Davis, Elizabeth E.; Connolly, Laura S.; Weber, Bruce A..
The employment outcomes of a group of jobless poor Oregonians are tracked in order to analyze the relative importance of local labor market conditions on their employment outcomes. Local job growth increases the probability that a jobless poor adult will get a job and shortens the length of time until she finds a job. After accounting for both the effects of personal demographic characteristics and local job growth, there is little evidence that the probability of employment or the duration of joblessness differs in rural compared with urban areas.

Non-Linearities and Fractional Integration in the US Unemployment Rate AgEcon
Caporale, Guglielmo Maria; Gil-Alana, Luis A..
This paper proposes a model of the US unemployment rate which accounts for both its asymmetry and its long memory. Our approach, based on the tests of Robinson (1994), introduces fractional integration and nonlinearities simultaneously into the same framework (unlike earlier studies employing a sequential procedure), using a Lagrange Multiplier procedure with a standard limit distribution. The empirical results suggest that the US unemployment rate can be specified in terms of a fractionally integrated process, which interacts with some non-linear functions of the labour demand variables (real oil prices and real interest rates). We also find evidence of a long-memory component. Our results are consistent with a hysteresis model with path dependency rather...

POVERTY, POLICY, AND THE MACROECONOMY AgEcon
LeBlanc, Michael.
This report is an empirical inquiry into how poverty is changed by the macroeconomy. The analysis suggests low real wage rates and not the unemployment rate are the most important determinant of poverty in the long run. Changes in output and unemployment primarily affect cyclical or shortun poverty. The empirical results weaken the belief that output growth acting alone will significantly and permanently reduce poverty in the United States. Instead, the results suggest combining economic growth strategies with targeted interventions that may lie outside the traditional sphere of monetary and fiscal policy.

AZ OKTATÁS ÉS A MUNKAERŐPIAC ÁLLAPOTA KÖZÖTTI KAPCSOLAT MAGYARORSZÁGON AgEcon
Csehne Papp, Imola.
Ezzel összefüggésben a legfontosabb teendők közé tartozik a képzési rendszer korszerűsítése, amelyet a tankötelezettség jelenleginél következetesebb érvényesítése mellett, a mainál...

REGIONAL EXAMINATION OF CERTAIN FACTORS INFLUENCING THE QUALITY OF LIFE AgEcon
Anett, Sores; Karoly, Peto.
The rate of unemployment in Hajdú-Bihar County is several percent higher than the national average and the actual number of unemployed people is the highest, resulting in considerable social problems. The majority of families living under the minimum subsistence level cannot cover their housing maintenance costs. These costs include the rents of tenement flats, public charges, water, electricity, gas and district heating charges. Cutting the number of unemployed people and stimulating economic activity is a high priority. Important tools towards achieving these goals include the promotion of non-agricultural activities by households engaged in agriculture, incentives for rural microenterprises, the development of rural and agro-tourism and support for...

EMPLOYMENT CRISIS IN AGRICULTURE AND THE SPATIAL INEQUALITIES IN HUNGARY AgEcon
Ritter, Krisztian.
Main objective of the paper is to discover Hungary’s rural areas suffering from agricultural employment crisis and to compare them to the spatial inequalities, examining the development possibilities and the adaptability to new economic and social processes. The actuality of this objective has been given by the recent processes in the global, European and Hungarian economy, the growing importance of local development and endogenous resources, the decreasing role of agriculture in total employment, and the general problems of rural areas. Based on multivariable statistical methods (factorial-, discriminant- and cluster analyses) and the data of 15 years before the EU accession, the selected micro-regions could be reliable separated by the economical state...

A Critical Assessment of Islamic Economics AgEcon
Shams, Rasul.
This paper presents a critical assessment of the widely discussed concept of Islamic Economics. The two different interpretations of Islamic economics as the study of the functioning of an interest-free economy and the validity of moral values in the economy are discussed. It is shown that none of these interpretations can help to create an acceptable foundation for an Islamic economics. Far away from laying the foundation for such an economics the question is raised how an Islamic economy would function, based on the Islamic principle of controlling the Nafs. Microeconomics and macroeconomics of such an economy are analysed and its special features are compared to an economy functioning on the basis of laws devised by the conventional economic analysis.

Classification of the EU countries labour markets AgEcon
Kaba, Bohumil.
The objective of the paper is to classify the labour markets of the EU member states on the basis of selected employment and unemployment indicators. In order to achieve the study target, the adequate multivariate exploration procedures have been chosen. In the first part of processing original data, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed. PCA is a multivariate statistical procedure used to reduce the number of observed variables into a smaller number of uncorrelated variables with a minimum loss of information. Moreover, the PCA results can be used for effective ranking of the EU countries according to observed indicators of labour markets. This paper describes the crucial steps in PCA and procedure for ranking mentioned and it reviews how...

Helyi vidékfejlesztési programok a hátrányos helyzetű vidéki kistérségekben AgEcon
Kassai, Zsuzsanna; Ritter, Krisztian.
Írásunk felvázolja az alulról kezdeményezett helyi vidékfejlesztési programok által nyújtott lehetőségeket azokban a hátrányos helyzetű kistérségekben, amelyek a legtöbbet szenvedtek a mezőgazdasági foglalkoztatás csökkenése miatt. Kutatásunk eredményei arra engednek következtetni, hogy az ÚMVP LEADER program és az ÚMVP III. tengely LEADER elveken alapuló négy intézkedése már eddig is hozzájárult a helyi gazdasági és társadalmi problémák mérsékléséhez a hét vizsgált HACS területén, de szerintünk további változtatások szükségesek a helyi vidékfejlesztési stratégiákban annak érdekében, hogy valóban jelentős gazdasági, társadalmi fejlődés következzen be. A vizsgált kistérségek a foglalkoztatási válság miatt kerültek érdeklődésünk középpontjába, de ennek...

Rural America At A Glance, 2009 Edition AgEcon
Kusmin, Lorin D..
Update of an annual series, the 2009 edition of Rural America At A Glance deals with effects of the major recession on rural America. Initially, effects of the recession were mitigated in nonmetro areas by high commodity prices throughout much of 2008, but as the recession deepened, prices fell. Both nonmetro and metro areas experienced rising unemployment as manufacturing and other major employment sectors contracted, and they were similarly affected by the mortgage foreclosure crisis. However, even before the current recession, nonmetro poverty rates had risen in the growth years after the 2001 recession, against the usual trend during a time of economic expansion; the nonmetro poverty rate has exceeded the national poverty rate since 2001. The nonmetro...

THE IMPACT OF THE 1990s ECONOMIC BOOM ON LESS-EDUCATED WORKERS IN RURAL AMERICA AgEcon
Davis, Elizabeth E.; Bosley, Stacie A..
This article uses National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) data to investigate the impact of local labor market conditions on the employment and earnings of rural non-college-educated workers. The results suggest that local economic conditions in the late 1990s did have a positive impact on wages, and the effect is larger for workers with no more than a high school degree compared to their college-educated counterparts. Further, there is evidence of a difference between rural and urban labor markets, suggesting that the 1990s boom helped urban less-educated workers but not those in rural areas. The rural/urban difference is most apparent for male workers.
