New records of the rare wasps Microdynerus exilis and Chrysis gracillima in the Netherlands (Hymenoptera: Vespidae, Chrysididae) Microdynerus exilis and Chrysis gracillima have been rarely recorded in recent times in the Netherlands. New records were the impulse to compile the records of these two species. Only Microdynerus nugdunensis is known in literature as potential host for M. exilis. It seems sure that M. exilis is the main host of C. gracillima in the Netherlands, considering the distribution patterns (fig. 3-5), several records of both species at the exact same locality and the congruent pattern of records over the year (fig. 6). |

A comprehensive generic catalogue of the Vespidae is presented. New nomenclatural changes include synonymy of Alastoroides Saussure, 1856, with Paralastor Saussure 1856; Araucodynerus Willink, 1968, with Hypodynerus Saussure 1855; and Paranortonia Bequaert, 1940, with Parazumia Saussure, 1855. Paravespa Bell, 1936, non Radoszkowski, 1886, is a synonym of Eustenogaster van der Vecht, 1966. |

The primary types of social wasp subfamilies Vespinae, Polistinae and Stenogastrinae housed in the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum in Leiden and the Zoölogisch Museum in Amsterdam are listed. Their complete label data are given unless they are available elsewhere. Lectotypes of Polistes snelleni de Saussure, 1862, P. malayanus Cameron, 1906, P. melanopterus Cameron, 1911, P. javanicus Cameron, 1905, Icaria capensis de Saussure, 1862, 7. plebeja de Saussure, 1862, Stenogater micans de Saussure, 1852, and Ischnogaster foveatus du Buysson, 1907, are designated. |

The taxonomy of the "species" treated as subspecies of Ropalidia flavopicta (= R. flavopicta-complex) by van der Vecht (1962) were reexamined. Four forms in the complex other than the species in the Philippine Islands are concluded to be valid species: R. flavopicta (Smith), R. javanica van der Vecht, R. ochracea van der Vecht, and R. ornaticeps (Cameron). The two subspecies of the Philippine species, R. flavobrunnea van der Vecht, namely lapiniga Kojima and iracunda Kojima, are sunk into the nominate species. A new species is described based on a female listed under "R. flavopicta flavobrunnea " by van der Vecht (1962). |

The phylogeny of the Stenogastrinae wasps is still under discussion and their systematic incomplete. In the present work we used geometric morphometrics, a technique based on a rigorous statistical assessment of shape, to compare the forewings of fifteen species of Stenogastrinae wasps belonging to four different genera to ascertain whether this approach may be used as a reliable method in the study of the taxonomy of the group. The results show that the wing vein junctions can be diagnostic for both genus and species identification. For the first time in this subfamily, we propose a phylogenetic classification of the species based on wing morphology that largely agrees with the cladistic data available at genus level and reflects the differences among... |

A survey of social wasps was made in the area of the "Ferreira Penna" Research Station (ECFPn) in Caxiuanã, PA, Brazil. Traditional collecting methods as the use of Malaise traps and the search for individuals and colonies of wasps along trails in the forest and by river margins, were applied in a more systematized fashion. Seventy-nine species belonging to 18 genera were discovered within a discontinuous period of 52 days of collecting. Angiopolybia pallens, Polybia liliacea, and several Agelaia species were the most frequently collected species. Active search for wasps in the forest and by river margins was far more efficient than Malaise traps regarding the discovery of polistine species. |

The flower-visiting social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) in two areas of Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. The structure of flower-visiting social wasps' assemblages in the CPCN Pró-Mata of São Francisco de Paula and in the Green Belt of Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, are characterized. A total of 879 polistine wasps were collected, of which 475 (11 spp.) in the CPCN and 404 (21 spp.) in the Green Belt, from September 1997 to April 2001 and from September 2001 to April 2004, respectively. Foraging social wasps were observed on flowers of 36 species of angiosperms (20 families) in the Green Belt, and on flowers of 54 species of angiosperms (21 families) in the CPCN. Asteraceae was the most visited plant family on both studied... |

Human exploitation of the forest in the northwest of São Paulo State has generated enormous fragmentation of that forest. Such disturbance has reduced the populations of insects in general. This work was a survey of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae; Polistinae) in three areas in different stages of regeneration: Paulo de Faria - SP (435 ha), Pindorama - SP (128 ha) and Neves Paulista - SP (1 ha). These three areas were chosen for comparative purposes. To capture the wasps, it was used: active collecting with attractant liquid (solution of water, salt and sugar) with the aid of a dorsal spray bag. During the period from July to December 2006, 414 social wasps were collected in Paulo de Faria, constituting seven species belonging to four genera; 111... |
