In this work, the toxicity and genotoxicity of organic solvents (acetone, carbon tetrachloride, dichloromethane, dimethylsulfoxide, ethanol, ether and methanol) were studied using the SOS chromotest. The influence of these solvents on the direct genotoxicity induced by the mutagens mitomycin C (MMC) and 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4-NQO) were also investigated. None of the solvents were genotoxic in Escherichia coli PQ37. However, based on the inhibition of protein synthesis assessed by constitutive alkaline phosphatase activity, some solvents (carbon tetrachloride, dimethylsulfoxide, ethanol and ether) were toxic and incompatible with the SOS chromotest. Solvents that were neither toxic nor genotoxic to E. coli (acetone, dichloromethane and methanol)... |

Symptoms recalling a nutritional pathology and more precisely a process of lipid peroxydation were observed during the last years in seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and other fishes cultured in tropical marine condition, Ocyurus chrysurus and Lutjanus analis . They included dark coloration, skin ulceration, lethargy, anorexy, emaciation. Histological examinations showed hepatic fatty degenerative lesions, pancreatitis, muscular degeneration and retinal atrophy. Additional vitamins E and C in the food suppressed that pathological symptoms. The previously evoked clinical or histological signs were not achieved in spite of an increase of the level of hepatic, muscular or blood malondialdehyde and of the conjugated dienes of the perivisceral fat. In the same... |

The content of inositol and vitamin E included in Golden berry was higher than them of yellow and red mini-tomato. Also, vitamin C content and reduction activity of Golden berry were higher than that of red mini tomato. Quantity of total chlorophyll decreased Golden berry as ripening up, however other ingredient contents such as total carotene, inositol, vitamin E, reduction activity and antioxidant activity increased. Background: Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) has been adopted as national policy for the first-line treatment in large number of malaria-endemic regions. However, artemisinin-resistant parasites have emerged and are spreading, with slow-cleaning parasites being reported in patients treated with ACT. It means that more parasites are exposed to the partner drug alone and the risk of developing resistant parasites against the partner drug is increasing. Therefore, the development of a new method to enhance the effect of artemisinin is required. In this study, the potential effect of probucol as a combination drug of dihydroartemisinin (DHA), an artemisinin derivative, was examined. Methods: C57BL/6 J mice infected with Plasmodium yoelii XL-17 were... |

In aquaculture, alpha-tocopheryl acetate (alpha-TA) is the main source of vitamin E used to fortify fish feed. Alpha-TA in fish is often determined indirectly, i.e. by alkaline hydrolysis, followed by quantitation of ‘total alpha-tocopherol’ (alpha-T) and substraction of the natively present alpha-T. The aim of this study was to develop an HPLC method for the simultaneous quantitative determination of alpha-TA and free tocopherols in aquatic organisms and fish feed. The assay consists of a simple extraction with methanol containing butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) as an antioxidant, followed by reversed-phase chromatography with consecutive UV and fluorescence detection of alpha-TA and tocopherols, respectively. The peak of the internal standard tocol in the... |

The humoral immune response of broilers fed diets supplemented with Zinc (Zn) (0, 40, and 400mg/kg) and vitamin E (0, 12, and 120mg/kg), separately or combined, was evaluated. A completely randomized design was used according to a 3x3 factorial arrangement, with nine treatments and four repetitions per treatment. Sexed birds (n=1440) were distributed in 36 boxes with 40 chicks each and reared until 41 days of age. Vaccination against Newcastle Disease (ND) was performed when birds were 14 days old. ELISA and HI tests were used to assess antibody levels before vaccination and at 28, 35 and 41 days of age. The results were analyzed using Proc Mixed from SAS. The interaction between the highest dietary levels of Zn and vitamin E resulted in higher antibody... |
