New species of Waltheria (Hermannieae, Byttnerioideae, Malvaceae¹) from Paraguay, Argentina, and Venezuela, and two new records for Paraguay Darwiniana
Saunders,Janice G..
Waltheria carmensarae, a homostylous species from northeastern Argentina, southeastern Paraguay, and central Venezuela, and W. procumbens, a distylous species from northeastern Paraguay, are newly described and illustrated. Both species share along with some other species of Waltheria sect. Waltheria and all of sect. Stegowaltheria an elongate-plumose stigma, adaxial petals with raised succulent midribs, petals adnate to the stamen tube for more than 0.8 mm in length, and a capsule with hardened endocarp only at the apex. Waltheria carmensarae resembles the distylous species W. preslii, endemic to coastal Guerrero and Oaxaca, Mexico, whereas W. procumbens appears to be close to W. albicans, primarily from Brazil where distylous, with scattered homostylous...

Resurrection of the Maui Endemic Waltheria Pyrolifolia (Sterculiaceae, Hermannieae) Darwiniana
Saunders,Janice G..
Old and new morphological characters confirm that Waltheria pyrolifolia is abundantly distinct from W. indica s.l., not its synonym, nor teratological material of it. The first illustrations of W. pyrolifolia are presented. It is here IUCN global category assessed as critically endangered, tagged possibly extinct. The earliest lectotypifications of W. indica and W. americana, realized by Gillis in 1974, are clarified.

Pollen morphology of Waltheria L. (Malvaceae-Byttnerioideae) from Bahia, Brazil Acta Botanica
Silveira Júnior,Cristiano Eduardo Amaral; Lima,Luciene Cristina Lima e; Saba,Marileide Dias.
ABSTRACT Waltheria encompasses about 60 species distributed in Brazil and Mexico. To improve the palynology of the genus, we analyzed 14 species occurring in the Brazilian State of Bahia. Pollen grains were acetolyzed and examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Non-acetolyzed pollen grains were viewed by transmission electron microscopy. The results revealed two general pollen types based on exine ornamentation, such as reticulate and echinate, which are distinct with regard to (1) size and shape, (2) apertural type and number, (3) relative length of ectoapertures, and (4) thickening of the nexine compared to the sexine. An ultrastructural analysis of the pollen wall revealed a continuous foot layer and a compact and discontinuous...
