Drip pulses and soil mulching effect on american crisphead lettuce yield REA
Almeida,Willian F. de; Lima,Luiz A.; Pereira,Geraldo M..
ABSTRACT An experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Federal University of Lavras cultivated with American lettuce, cv. Raider-Plus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of irrigation water depths applied by drip pulses and of soil coverage on crop yields and efficiency of water use. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with eight treatments and three replications, totaling twenty-four plots. The treatments consisted of soil with and without coverage (double-sided white and black plastic) associated with four irrigation management levels. Irrigation management consisted in reposition of irrigation depths based on crop evapotranspiration (ETc) with D1-100% of ETc, applied continuously (control), and D2 - 100% of ETc, D3 -...

The Suess effect in Fiji coral delta C-13 and its potential as a tracer of anthropogenlc CO2 uptake ArchiMer
Dassie, Emilie P.; Lemley, Gavin M.; Linsley, Braddock K..
In the context of increasing anthropogenic CO2 emissions, determining the rate of oceanic CO2 uptake is of high interest. Centennial-scale changes in delta C-13 of the surface water dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) reservoir have been shown to be influenced by the carbon isotopic composition of atmospheric CO2. However, the availability of direct oceanic delta C-13 measurements is limited and methods for reconstructing past delta C-13 variability of the oceanic DIC are needed. Geochemical reconstructions of DIC variability can help in understanding how the ocean has reacted to historical changes in the carbon cycle. This study explores the potential of using temporal variations in delta C-13 measured in five Fijian Porites corals for reconstructing oceanic...

Influence of the irrigation in the growth Schinus terebinthifolius seedlings PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Morais, Weslley Wilker Corrêa; Susin, Felipe; Vivian, Magnos Alan; Araújo, Maristela Machado.
Aiming to evaluate the development of seedlings of Schinus terebinthifolius under different irrigation depth, an experiment was installed in a greenhouse. The experimental design used was randomized block consisting of 4 treatments with 3 blocks. The irrigation depths evaluated were 8, 10, 12 and 14 mm daily, respectively T1, T2, T3 and T4. Seedling production was performed in tubes with 280 cm ³ filled with pine bark basis substrate and fertilizer. The development of the seedlings, were evaluated by the following characteristics: height of aerial part (APA), diameter at breast height (D),dried mass weight of roots (PMSR), dried mass weight of aerial part (PMSPA), total dried mass (MST) and relation (h/d). The treatment T3 presented the best results in...

Economic analysis of irrigated melon cultivated in greenhouse with and without soil plastic mulching AGRIAMBI
Lima,Elvis M. de C.; Carvalho,Jacinto de A.; Viol,Miguel A.; Rezende,Fátima C.; Thebaldi,Michael S.; Diotto,Adriano V..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to analyze technically and economically the irrigated ‘Gália’ melon (Hybrid Nectar), cultivated in greenhouse with and without using plastic mulch covering on the soil. Simultaneously, two experiments were conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD), in which melon plants were submitted to five water availability levels, defined by 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150% of crop evapotranspiration, with four replicates. The difference between experiments were only about the soil covering with plastic mulch: with (CC) or without (SC) plastic mulch. The economically optimal irrigation depths were 208.83 and 186.88 mm, resulting in yields of 50.85 and 44.51 t ha-1 for the experiments with and without mulching,...

Water loss, sediment deposition-pond age relationships in Lagos State, Nigeria CIGR Journal
OMOFUNMI, Omofunmi Eric.
The issue of sediment in aquatic environments has been a topic of concern for many decades because it harbouring pathogen and decrease water depth.  . The investigation was carried out to identify and proffer solutions to some environmental and management problems that have hitherto affected fish production sub-sector of the economy, using Lagos State, (Western) Nigeria  as a case study. Both surveying and experimental methods were used. The results indicated that of water loss from ponds resulting from evaporation and seepage ranged from 2.5 – 4.6 day-1. Percentage reduction in pond water depth during dry season ranged from 70 – 81 % as compared to the observed percentage increase during rainy season with range of values as, 17 – 34%. The mean rise and...

Spatial distribution and activities of the estuarine dolphin Sotalia guianensis (van Bénédén, 1864) (Cetacea, Delphinidae) in Pontal Bay, Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Santos,Urânia Amaral dos; Alvarez,Martin Roberto; Schilling,Ana Cristina; Strenzel,Gil Marcelo Reuss; Pendu,Yvonnick Le.
We analyzed the influence of time, tide and water depth on the activity and spatial distribution of estuarine dolphins Sotalia guianensis in Pontal Bay, Ilhéus, Brazil. Direct observations were carried out at four fixed points from January to December of 2006. Estuarine dolphins were sighted in 11 out of 12 months and in 30% of 181 sampling periods. The average group size, which was 3.75 ± 1.59 (n = 64), did not vary significantly by month (Kruskal-Wallis, H = 10.6729; p = 0.3836). Infants and adults represented 18 and 82% of the individuals whose age we were able to determine, respectively. Estuarine dolphins were more frequently present than expected in areas deeper than 3 m (regression GLM, z = 3.773; p = 0.0002). The animals were more frequently...
