Seasonal and vertical variations of sinking particle fluxes in the West Caroline Basin ArchiMer

A sediment trap experiment was carried out in the West Caroline Basin, located in the equatorial western Pacific between influences of the Asian monsoon and the open ocean. Annual mass flux at the shallow trap at Site 1 was 57.10 g m(-2)yr(-1). Generally, the higher flux of organic matter was associated with higher activities of biogenic opal-producing and carbonate-producing plankton communities. In addition, as the organic matter content increases, the organic carbon/carbonate carbon ratio shows a tendency to increase. Carbonate-producing plankton was predominant during periods 1 and 3 (May to July and November to the beginning of December), which could be due to limited silica supply to the euphotic zone. Helium isotopic composition of hydrothermal fluids from the Manus back-arc Basin, Papua New Guinea ArchiMer

We present isotopic analysis of helium in hydrothermal fluids from the Manus back-arc basin, collected during the French-Japanese Manusflux and Manaute cruises in 1995 and 2000, respectively. The helium isotope composition of the fluids is comparable to that measured elsewhere in similar subduction environments, with He-3/He-4 values (7.4 to 7.9 R-a) slightly lower than typical MORB values, except on the Manus Spreading Center (MSC) where higher values (12 +/- 0.1 R-a) are observed. The causal link between the narrow spatial extent of the He-3/He-4 anomaly at the MSC and a He-3-rich deep mantle component remains elusive, based on available geophysical data. Thus, the Manus Spreading Center results may be an interesting example of small scale upper-mantle...

Ficus subgenus Pharmacosycea section Oreosycea (Moraceae) in the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and the New Hebrides Naturalis

A survey of the species of Ficus subg. Pharmacosycea sect. Oreosycea for the western Pacific region (excl. New Caledonia) with descriptions of and a key to the species presently recognised for the region is presented. Ten species are recognised, of which three species and one subspecies are new: F. bubulia C.C. Berg, F. magwana C.C. Berg, F. magwana subsp. maragona C.C. Berg, and F. setulosa C.C. Berg.
