Comparative proteome analysis of Brettanomyces bruxellensisunder hydroxycinnamic acid growth Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Carmona,Lourdes; Varela,Javier; Godoy,Liliana; Ganga,María Angélica.
Background: Brettanomyces bruxellensis is an important spoilage yeast in the winemaking process. The capacity of this yeast to generate an undesired off-flavor constitutes a significant loss in the Chilean wine industry. Results: The proteomic profile of B. bruxellensis in the presence of p-coumaric acid was determined by 2D gel electrophoresis, gel image analysis and differential spot selection. A set of 41 proteins showed a differential accumulation of ±2 and a p-value <0.0001. The homology sequence analysis was performed using the databases available. Differential proteins belonged to the categories of 'energy production and conversion' and 'amino acid transport and metabolism'. Conclusions: The proteomic profile of B. bruxellensis cultivated in the...

Comparing the Productive Efficiency of Cooperatives and Private Enterprises: The Portuguese Wine Industry as a Case Study AgEcon
Barros, Carlos Pestana; Santos, J.C. Gomes.
This paper compares the efficiency of cooperatives and private enterprises in the Portuguese wine industry, employing data envelopment analysis (DEA). The use of DEA for the analysis of comparative efficiency within a sector is a key tool in evaluating organizational competitiveness. Competitiveness should be based on benchmarking the different types of organizations that comprise the viniculture sector. We conclude that Portuguese wine cooperatives, on average, are more efficient than their private counterparts. Economic implications arising from the study are discussed.

Export Implicit Financial Performance: The Case of French Wine Companies AgEcon
Viviani, Jean-Laurent.
Noting the difficulties of measuring a company’s export performance and especially financial performance, we develop a new measurement approach grounded on modern portfolio theory. The export intensities and the global financial performance of exporting companies being known, this approach allows deducing the export margin ratio, export risk and correlation of domestic activities with export activities. Using a sampling from French companies in the wine industry from 2001-2005, these implicit financial export performance characteristics are estimated. Main results found: export activities permit a better global margin-risk relationship essentially due to diversification gains because export financial performance seems to be inferior to the domestic one for...

The competitiveness of the Portuguese wine sector and a case study of exports and activity diversification in the Vinhos Verdes region AgEcon
Diniz, Francisco J.; Katsioloudes, Marios; Fortunas, Sandra P..
The world wine market is currently characterised by two principal wine suppliers: the European and the New World. Countries such as France, Italy, Spain and Portugal have witnessed a tremendous growth in the New World wine- makers (Australia, Chile, South Africa, etc.). As competition continues to intensify, wineries are searching for new channels to increase revenues and many vintners chose to develop other activities. Portugal is one of the European countries that present several natural and technical constraints which might be now resulting in modest performance regarding its position in the global wine market, competitiveness and dynamism required to overcome difficulties. The main objective of the study is to provide information to vintners concerning...

Human resource management in small and medium-sized vineyards in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Pérez Arrau,Gregorio; Muñoz Medina,Felipe.
G. Pérez Arrau, and F. Muñoz Medina. 2014. Human resource management in small and medium-sized vineyards in Chile. Cien. Inv. Agr. 41(2): 141-151. The focus of this paper is the identification of human resource management practices in small and medium-sized vineyards in Chile, identifying agents and relevant groups that allow a better understanding of how these companies manage their human resources. The research is based on 22 interviews held with personnel managers and key informants from a total of 16 wine-producing vineyards between 2009 and 2012. The research involved collecting studies and analyzing the specialized literature on human resource management in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The research highlights the features, relevant...
