Resumo:  Con el objeto de estudiar las funciones de esforzamiento y mecanismos que regulan la surgencia, a fin de desarrollar la capacidad de predicción de sus efectos sobre las pesquerías de la zona.

During August 2001 a coastal research cruise in 25 sampling stations around La Plata Island in the Province of Manabí, on board Rigel hydrographic vessel of the Oceanographic Institute of the Navy, was carried out. The study let us to know the possible occurrence of upwelling processes by the determination of the physical and chemical characteristics of water, which was determined by the presence of a cold water core (22.8°C and 33.8ups) relatively oxygenated waters (4.5m(/( to 10m) and quite high nutrient concentrations (2.3ugat/(nitrate, 0.6ugat/(phosphate, 9.9ugat/(silicate and 0.2ugat/(nitrite) located to the southeast of the Island. It also was observed the prevalence of Equatorial Surface Water (ESM), which suggest a weak upwelling in this area, which is atributed to a frictional processes on the bottom due the topography, the low depth characteristics of the area and the currents produced by the presence of the island.
