Resumo:  Legumes benefit the farming system via symbiotic N2 fixation and by their effect as break-crop for cereal diseases in rotations. However, most legumes are known to have a weak competitive ability towards weeds. It is discussed how a higher degree of interspecific competition combined with a certain complementarity be-tween intercropped species improves the crop stands competitive ability towards weeds. The weed-suppression approach from Liebman and Dyck (1993) are the most likely to ex-plain the present pea-barley IC findings.
