This work is the result of collaboration between the English, French, Channel Isles and Belgian laboratories which are involved in a study of the English Channel. Its subject is the activities of fleets and fleet interactions, and it complements other work on the biogeographical identification of Channel fish and shellfish stocks (published), and on modelling the fleets' interactions as they exploit the resources (in preparation). The concept of a métier is defined as being the use of one fishing gear to catch one or several species targeted during a particular season in a given area. On this basis, 74 métiers were identified during 1989-90. For each métier we give a brief description of the catching gear, the target species and most usual by-catch, the... |

An acoustic repellent was developed by Ixtrawl and Ifremer to mitigate incidental catches of common dolphins in trawl fisheries. The system developed-which bears the name of CETASAVER-was developed after behavioural tests performed on groups of common dolphins. These tests conducted at sea for the European project Necessity showed that the trajectories of animals could be changed by this pinger. The CETASAVER emits a beam directing conical with an opening between 75 and 15 degrees. This allows directional less disturbing environmental noise and must be directed towards the opening of the trawl and the frequency ranges from 30 to 150 kHz. The signals are modulated and pulsed. The average sound level is 178 dB which gives 139 dB at the entrance to the trawl... |

The recent developments in collecting techniques for spat of Chlamys operoularis and Chlamys varia make it necessary to find criteria for separating these two species at early life stages. Biométrie criteria for differenciating between species have been found to be usable on individuals of a height superior to 3 mm. A quick différenciation of smaller individuals is possible by observation, under light microscope, of the périostracum external morphology on left valves. |

Introduction : Since 1978, new measures to better manage lobster fisheries were implemented in the Celtic Sea within the context of Community regulations. Meshing, in particular, was set at 60mm, but many owners, in order to maintain sufficient leeway vis-à-vis the regulations and to avoid administrative hassles adopted at the outset fish meshing at 70mm, even 80mm. Certain habits aiming to compensate for the losses due to these increases were established: Adoption of better-performing trawls, increase in the secondary catch and enlargement of the fisheries. At the same time, especially because of strong demand from international bodies, OEM and especially EEC, knowledge about the lobster spread and more reliable assessments were achieved, the main problem... |

The exploitation of the living marine resources should take into account the effects on marine ecosystems. It consequently includes direct and indirect impacts of fishing activities on marine communities of non-market value for the fishing industry. Protecting the marine species victims of by-catch such as sea mammals is essential as it could be a serious threat for endangered species -See COM (1999) 363 final. The entire group of cetaceans are among the protected species listed by CITES against over-exploitation through international trade. Similarly, several international agreements on cetaceans conservation have been signed, including the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS), the ACCOBAMS agreement for... |

Introduction : It is now clear that the world's fishery resources are being subjected to exploitation at or above their capacity to produce maximum sustainable yields. At the same time as these trends are being felt, there is a very large wastage of fishery resources from discarding unwanted catches at sea. At the end of each fishing operation a part of the catch is often returned to the sea after sorting by the fishermen. A 1994 FAO report provided an estimate of global discards in commercial fisheries of 27 millions of tons per year compared to 50 million tons of direct human consumption. A more recent FAO document estimated that discards were in the order of 20 million tons in 1997. The majority of the world's fisheries are multi-species in nature and... |

Observers were set on board of fishing vessels from North Brittanny ports during one full year (1992-93). This study granted by EC Commission (contract CE/DGXIV-C-1 n° 1992/06) was a first approach for assessing French discards in the western English Channel. It identifies the main species discarded and produces a rough estimate of discard rates and size compositions in each métier targeting fish. The major reasons for variability were explained. Size compositions of catches and discards were provided in order to permit better estimates of the mortality induced by fishing operations. The fixed nets observed were large mesh nets (270 to 360 mm) targeting monkfish and small mesh nets (<200 mm) targeting coastal resources. Netting was found to be more... |

In crustaceans, size at first maturity is often determined by secondary sexual characters. The present work tries to determine the size at first maturity in Nephrops norvegicus from South-Brittany area with the development of some secondary sexual characters. We study a qualitative character - the presence or absence of ovigerous setae in females and biométrie characteristics - the width of the second abdominal segment in females, the length of the propod at the first pereiopod in males and females - The study of the relative growth of the propod length shows that males may reach sexual maturity at 19mm carapace length. The first maturity in females is reached at 23.5mm later than the coming out of the ovigerous setae. That carapace length is obtained... |

This study provides some background on the set nets and the use of the gears. The various metiers using set nets are presented by region and maritime basin detailing the target species. The physical characteristics of nets (type, mesh), the number of vessels engaged in the activity, fishing areas, the amount of material used and the composition of the catch are inventoried by target species. Intraspecific selectivity for the main target species of set nets is examined in light of the available size composition of catches of turbot, brill, monkfish, pollack, red mullet, bass, common sole, rays, hake, spider crab, lobster. Few differences exist between the nets (single layer) and trammel nets except for the lobster. Minimum mesh sizes are suggested by target... |

The average length at which female Nephrops norvegicus attain their first maturity was determined during 1977 and 1978 by following the presence of spermatophores and development of the ovaries. During 1978, females were sexually mature at the age of 2 but in 1977 they did not mature before the age of 3. The cumulative maturity curves are sigmoid, due to an overlapping of Gaussian curves. A logistic equation was developed to calculate the percentage of mature females at each length. There is no evidence that the present fishing levels reduce the chances of a female with developing ovaries to be fertilized, since 90 to 100% of such females bear spermatophores. |
