| Producing the Inventory of Potential Sites for Aquaculture along the Finistère Shoreline was decided by the Département's Regional Council with the goal of integrating aquafarming in the best way possible into the variety of businesses that are based along the coastal zone. Aquafarming, in order for it to exist tomorrow, needs to be taken into account today as far as preservation of sites, and this must be done with two aspects in mind: - land, on shore; - water quality (which implies maritime and land constraints). In this context, the Regional Council has entrusted the Centre National pour l'Exploitation des Océans with a study that will make it possible to define the aquafarming potential of the Finistère shoreline. L'objectif est d'établir un document permettant d'assurer, tant en zone intertidale que subtidale, l'interprétation de l'image SPOT acquise sur ce secteur et de pouvoir ainsi définir l'apport du satellite dans la cartographie générale du phytobenthos en milieu cÔtier, en particulier sur les fucales et les laminaires. | The coastal marsh of Kervigen is located near by the bay of Douarnenez and its 22 hectares are almost entirely covered by reeds. An experiment was there carried out to assess the nitrogen flux depletion of a small stream, the Kerharo. That one has a 45 km 2 mostly agricultural drainage basin. Due to its nitrate loadings to the next sandy beach, it feeds a green algae (Ulva) proliferation. In order to control its nitrogen fluxes, the stream was partly diverted through a part of the marsh (9 ha), before it was allowed to go back to the main bed. Thus a collapsible weir was set up during several springs and summers, i.e. the growing period of Ulva. | L'ostréiculture en baie de Morlaix demeure une activité emblématique du territoire qui contribue à sa notoriété ainsi qu'à son attractivité. Cette activité du secteur primaire, qui emploie 107 peronnes en Equivalent Temps Plein (ETP), produit annuellement environ 7000 tonnes d'huîtres creuses et environ 90 tonnes d'huîtres plates ce qui représentent indéniablement un poids socio-économique significatif à l'échelon local. | In order to identify the origin of the fecal contamination observed in French estuaries, two library-independent microbial source tracking (MST) methods were selected: (i) Bacteroidales host-specific 16S rRNA gene markers and (ii) F-specific RNA bacteriophage genotyping. The specificity of the Bacteroidales markers was evaluated on human and animal (bovine, pig, sheep, and bird) feces. Two human-specific markers (HF183 and HF134), one ruminant-specific marker (CF193'), and one pig-specific marker (PF163) showed a high level of specificity (>90%). | In recent years. large quantities of green algae (Ulva sp.) had accumulated and decayed on the southern shores of the Bay of St-Brieuc (Brittany France). Maximum standing stock has been evaluated to 25 000 tons, 11 500 tons and 5 400 tons respectively for the years 1986, 1988 and 1989. Unusual low rainfall and river flow in the springtime period seem to be responsible for this observed decreased of biomass. Nevertheless, progressively increasing average concentrations of nitrogen (limiting factor) measured in terrestrial inputs may cause an enhancement of excessive growth and accumulation of Ulva in the forthcoming years. | Short lived algal species with an important biomass are the one thing most susceptible to disturb the good functioning of the pump houses of the Flamanville thermo-nuclear plant. In the biological cycle of Fugacious, Laminarials, Cystoseiraceae, Rhodymemials and, among Sargassaceae, Sargassum muticum, autumn is the season when algae are the weakest after their periods of maximal growth and reproduction.
