Aerial surveys of bluefin tuna in the Western Mediterranean sea: retrospective, prospective, perspective ArchiMer
Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Farrugio, Henri; Poisson, Francois; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
While the current stock status of bluefin tuna (BFT) has been considered as declining, there remain considerable data limitations for its stock assessment in the Mediterranean Sea. The collection of fishery-independent data reveals to be crucial to compensate for the lack of Mediterranean purse seine CPUE indices as well as to overcome a potential halt in the bluefin tuna fishery that would impede the monitoring of the stock and the comparison to reference points. Here we present a retrospective of aerial surveys that have been carried out since 2000. It includes the protocol as well as a retrospective of temporal and spatial distribution of detected schools. We then propose several perspectives that could improve the data collection method itself and the...

Modélisation du transport particulaire dans le Golfe du Lion en vue d'une application au devenir des traceurs radioactifs issus du Rhône ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois.
Among the contaminants introduced into the environment, the artificial radionuclides appear particularly important to take into account because of their chemical toxicity and/or of their radiotoxicity. Some radionuclides present a high affinity with particles so that the study of the sediment dynamics is a useful preliminary to the study of their dispersion on the open sea. This thesis is focused on the fate of sediments in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) and in particular on the impact of the Rhone River, which is the main source of particulate matter in the Gulf of Lions. In order to study the sediment transport mechanisms on various space and time scales, this thesis is based on mathematical modelling. The hydro-sedimentary model set up in the Gulf...

Facteurs de contrôle sur le fonctionnement du système turbiditique du Rhône depuis le Dernier Maximum Glaciaire ArchiMer
Lombo Tombo, Swesslath.
Turbidite systems are accumulations of fluvial sediment on the continental margins. They are mainly made of « turbidites » deposited after the flow of turbidity currents inside submarine canyons and channels. Their structure and composition are controlled by global and regional environmental changes such as sea level and climate. The two fundamental parameters that govern their functioning are the production of sediment in the river watersheds and the capability and reactivity of the transfer to the turbidite system. In this work we show that for the last 24,000 years the functioning of the Rhone turbidite system has shown rapid changes under the control of sea level and sediment production fluctuations. Our results are based on a millennial time-scale...

Interactions entre pêcheries de lagunes, pêcheries côtières et pêche au chalut dans le golfe du Lion ArchiMer
Farrugio, Henri; Le Corre, Gildas.
INTRODUCTION : This document is the final report concerning a study led on interactions between lagoon fisheries, coastal fisheries and trawl fishing in the Lion gulf. If any of the three components mentioned above is able to catch species of interest (or none) to the other groups, other ones are of interest to at least two components. Furthermore, within each group, interactions between various fleet and/or trade can exist. Interactions are more complex on account of the specific diversity of catches. If until 1984, trawler fleets were the subject of continuous studies, lagoon and coastal fleets were only considered on a one off basis... The goal of the work led by IFREMER concerning Mediterranean halieutic resources aims at obtaining basic elements...

Variability of PCB burden in 5 fish and sharks species of the French Mediterranean continental slope ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Fabri, Marie-claire; Miralles, Francoise Marco; Dufour, Jean-louis; Elleboode, Romain; Sevin, Karine; Mahe, Kelig; Bouchoucha, Marc.
Despite being generally located far from contamination sources, deep marine ecosystems are impacted by chemicals like PCB. The PCB contamination in five fish and shark species collected in the continental slope of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean Sea) was measured, with a special focus on intra- and interspecific variability and on the driving factors. Significant differences occurred between species. Higher values were measured in Scyliorhinus canicula, Galeus melastomus and Helicolenus dactylopterus and lower values in Phycis blennoides and Lepidorhombus boscii. These differences might be explained by specific abilities to accumulate and eliminate contaminant, mostly through cytochrome P450 pathway. Interindividual variation was also high and no...

Mesoscale slope current variability in the Gulf of Lions. Interpretation of in-situ measurements using a three-dimensional model ArchiMer
Andre, Gael; Garreau, Pierre; Fraunie, Philippe.
The ECOLOPHY experiments aimed at investigating physical exchanges between coastal and open sea. They were carried out in June and December 2005 over the shelf-break in the North-eastern part of the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea). This area is considered to be the generation zone for the eddy and meandering structures of the Northern Current (NC). The objective of the present work is to examine mesoscale variability of this coastal slope current in the light of available data. Numerical modeling is used to support the field data analysis. ADCP current measurements over a one-year period show that mesoscale activity is maximal in late winter, correlating with the seasonal variability of the NC and, also, partly with local winds, Measured...

Messinian erosional and salinity crises: View from the Provence Basin (Gulf of Lions, Western Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Bache, Francois; Olivet, Jean-louis; Gorini, Christian; Rabineau, Marina; Baztan, Juan; Aslanian, Daniel; Suc, Jean-pierre.
Though the late Miocene "Messinian Salinity Crisis" has been intensely researched along the circum-Mediterranean basins, few studies have focused on the central part of the Mediterranean Basin and, especially, the pre-salt deposits. To improve our knowledge of the Messinian events, it is imperative to better understand this domain. In this study, we provide a more complete understanding of this central domain in the Provence Basin. We were able to recognize: a) thick marine detrital series (up to 1000 m) derived from the Messinian subaerial erosion which is partly prolongated in the distal part by b) a thick unit of deep marine deposits (up to 800 m) prior to the evaporites; c) a thick presumed alternation of detritals and evaporites (1500 m) below the...

The fisheries history of small pelagics in the Northern Mediterranean ArchiMer
Van Beveren, Elisabeth; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Rouyer, Tristan; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Brosset, Pablo; Saraux, Claire.
Since 2007, the biomass of sardine and anchovy in the NW Mediterranean has remained persistently low, whereas the biomass of the commercially low-valued sprat has exploded. Also, simultaneous decreases in condition, size, and/or age of these populations were observed. Altogether, this resulted in a drop in landings of small pelagics. To understand the amplitude of these events and to provide a baseline scenario against which current changes can be compared, we compiled exceptionally long landing series (1865–2013) of sardine, anchovy, and mackerel for different subregions of the southern French coast. We characterized the fluctuations of these landings and compared these with environmental drivers (sea surface temperature, Rhône river discharge, North...

Investigating Rhône River plume (Gulf of Lions, France) dynamics using metrics analysis from the MERIS 300m Ocean Color archive (2002 − 2012) ArchiMer
Gangloff, Aurelien; Verney, Romaric; Doxaran, David; Ody, Anouck; Estournel, Claude.
In coastal environments, river plumes are major transport mechanisms for particulate matter, nutriments and pollutants. Ocean colour satellite imagery is a valuable tool to explore river turbid plume characteristics, providing observations at high temporal and spatial resolutions of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration over a long time period, covering a wide range of hydro-meteorological conditions. We propose here to use the MERIS-FR (300 m) Ocean Colour archive (2002–2012) in order to investigate Rhône River turbid plume patterns generated by the two main forcings acting on the north-eastern part of the Gulf of Lions (France): wind and river freshwater discharge. Results are exposed considering plume metrics (area of extension,...

Can satellite-derived chlorophyll imagery be used to trace surface dynamics in coastal zone? A case study in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Forget, Philippe; Andre, Gael.
A comparison of chlorophyll data from SeaWiFS imagery and modeling results from a 3D hydrodynamical model was performed over the northwestern Mediterranean for the entire year of 2001. The study aims at investigating the information content brought by satellite-derived chlorophyll concentration ([Chl]) maps concerning surface dynamics in coastal zone. The study is mainly focused on the Gulf of Lions (GoL) and its outer region, which are mainly influenced by the Rh ne River, local winds and the Northern Current (NC) flowing from the East along the continental slope. The physical hydrodynamical model was continuously run and 40 SeaWiFS images, presenting a significant coverage of the studied area, were selected. The comparison between [ Chl] and sea surface...

Effets de l'exploitation par la pêche sur la dynamique de diversité des peuplements de poissons démersaux : analyse comparée du rôle des interactions entre espèces dans le golfe de Gascogne et dans le golfe du Lion ArchiMer
Blanchard, Fabian.
This work deals with the fishing effects on the diversity dynamics of demersal fish communities, focusing on the biotic interactions. Multispecies indices are used in order to characterize the demersal fish community dynamics of the Bay of Biscay and of the Gulf of Lions. These are the diversity indices, the temporal variability of the total biomass and of the slope of the number size spectra and the slope of the species-area curves (spatial segregation). The yearly bottom trawl surveys EVHOE, CHALIST and MEDITS, carried out in these two areas since 1983 by IFREMER for the stocks assessment provide the data. The differences between areas are related to a fishing index (mean value of the annual landings of demersal fish per surface area). Other areas are...

Fluctuations of landings and environmental conditions in the north-western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Lloret, J; Lleonart, J; Sole, I; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Most of the monthly catches and CPUE of 13 studied commercial species in the coastal waters of the north-western Mediterranean were significantly positively correlated with run-off of local rivers (Rhone and Muga) and the wind mixing index during the spawning season, with time lags of less than a year (transfer function analyses). Rhone and Ebre interannual fluctuations in run-off were synchronous and were related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), river run-offs being negatively correlated to high NAO episodes. The fluctuations of river discharges and the wind mixing index were cyclic but not related. The results showed that enhanced hydroclimatic conditions in the NW Mediterranean were favourable for the productivity of the fish and invertebrate...

Aerial surveys to monitor bluefin tuna abundance and track efficiency of management measures ArchiMer
Bauer, Robert; Bonhommeau, Sylvain; Brisset, Blandine; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Conservation and management measures for exploited fish species rely on our ability to monitor variations in population abundance. In the case of the eastern stock of Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT), recent changes in management policies have strongly affected the reliability of fishery-dependent indicators due to drastic changes in fishing season/area, fisheries selectivity and strategy. However, fishery-independent indices of abundance are rare for large pelagic fish, and obtaining them is often costly and labor intensive. Here, we show that scientific aerial surveys are an appropriate tool for monitoring juvenile bluefin tuna abundance in the Mediterranean. We present an abundance index based on 62 aerial surveys conducted since 2000, using 2 statistical...

Programme pilote de gestion halieutique : groupe de propositions sur l'organisation de la gestion des pêches dans le golfe du Lion ArchiMer
Bertrand, Jacques; Catanzano, Joseph; Caboche, C; Rey, Hélène; Tempier, E.

Preliminary results of aerial surveys of bluefin tuna in the western Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Farrugio, Henri; Deflorio, Michèle; De Metrio, Gregorio.
One of the aims of the EU project STROMBOLI (2000-2002) was to conduct an aerial survey for bluefin tuna in the western Mediterranean Sea to test the feasibility of computing an index of abundance from direct observation. This approach has at least two advantages: (i) to provide fishery-independent information and observation, and (ii) to compensate for the lack of Mediterranean purse seine CPUE indices. The first surveys were done in June-July 2000 over the Balearic and Sicilian areas, where and when adult bluefin tuna used to concentrate for spawning, but the results were disappointing (spawners can hardly be detected from a plane). In contrast, the results obtained from the surveys for juveniles of BFT in the Gulf of Lions and in the Ligurian and...

Determining bluefin tuna habitat through frontal features in the Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Royer, Francois; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Farrugio, Henri; Gaspar, Philippe.
The distribution patterns of bluefin tuna schools observed during the STROMBOLI EU project (2000-2002) were analysed in relation to oceanographic conditions. High-resolution radiometers (AVHRR and SeaWiFS) were used on a daily basis to derive maps of environmental variability. An edge detection technique was especially applied to estimate the position of frontal features. Using a variety of geostatistical and point process techniques, we were able to show that the distribution of bluefin schools was partially driven by the occurrence of transient fronts in the Gulf of Lions. This is believed to be mainly a trophic association, since enhanced convergence and retention processes occur at fronts, possibly leading to higher prey densities (e.g. anchovies). The...

Modeling larval dispersal for the gilthead seabream in the northwestern Mediterranean sea ArchiMer
Lett, Christophe; Barrier, Nicolas; Ourmières, Yann; Petit, Cécile; Labonne, Maylis; Bourjea, Jerome; Darnaude, Audrey M..
To investigate dispersal and connectivity between spawning and lagoon nursery habitats of the gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea), we modeled the potential transport of the species’ larvae between its supposed main spawning site in the region (the Planier Island) and two of its main local nursery areas (the coastal lagoons of Thau and Salses-Leucate). Passive larval drift simulations using a dispersal biophysical model showed a large variability in the possible trajectories from spawning to nursery areas and in the predicted ages for larvae arrival on the two nursery sites. The most common ages at arrival obtained in the simulations (20–60 days) are broadly consistent with previous modeling studies but...

Glider-Based Active Acoustic Monitoring of Currents and Turbidity in the Coastal Zone ArchiMer
Gentil, Mathieu; Many, Gaël; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Cauchy, Pierre; Pairaud, Ivane; Testor, Pierre; Verney, Romaric; Bourrin, François.
The recent integration of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) onto underwater gliders changes the way current and sediment dynamics in the coastal zone can be monitored. Their endurance and ability to measure in all weather conditions increases the probability of capturing sporadic meteorological events, such as storms and floods, which are key elements of sediment dynamics. We used a Slocum glider equipped with a CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth), an optical payload, and an RDI 600 kHz phased array ADCP. Two deployments were carried out during two contrasting periods of the year in the Rhone River region of freshwater influence (ROFI). Coastal absolute currents were reconstructed using the shear method and bottom tracking measurements, and...

Wave- and current-induced bottom shear stress distribution in the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Garreau, Pierre; Le Hir, Pierre; Forget, P.
Simulations of both currents and waves were performed throughout the year 2001 to assess the relative contribution of each to their overall erosive potential on the Gulf of Lions shelf. Statistical analysis of bottom shear stress (BSS) was compared to sediment grain-size distribution on the bottom. The hydrodynamic features of the bottom layer coincide with the distribution of surficial sediments, and three areas with different hydro-sedimentary characteristics were revealed. (i) The sandy inner shelf ( < 30 m) area is a high-energy-wave dominated area but may be subjected to intense current-induced BSS during on-shore winds along the coast and during continental winds mainly in the up-welling cells. (ii) The middle shelf (30-100 m) is a low-energy...

Constraining the origin of recently deposited particles using natural radionuclides 7 Be and 234 Th ex in deltaic sediments ArchiMer
Wu, Junwen; Rabouille, Christophe; Charmasson, Sabine; Reyss, Jean Louis; Cagnat, Xavier.
7Be and 234Thex activities were determined in sediment cores off the Rhône River mouth (Gulf of Lions), in order to trace the initial transport and deposition of riverine suspended particulate matter (SPM) and evaluate the impact of flood events through 7 cruises carried out between 2007 and 2008. Consistently high 7Be and 234Thex inventories of 2000–3000 mBq cm−2 and 3000–5000 mBq cm−2, respectively, were observed within a ~5 km radius off the Rhône River mouth. Their spatial distributions showed a gradual decrease with increasing distance from the Rhône River mouth, and the decrease in 7Be was more pronounced than that of 234Thex, indicating that recent riverine SPM is rapidly deposited in the area located near the river mouth. This area is also...
