SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL ANALYSIS OF SEAWIFS CHLOROPHYLL IN THE SOUTH TROPICAL PACIFIC OCEAN Gayana
Dupouy,C; Neveux,J; Le Bouteiller,A.
The South West Tropical Pacific (SWTP) is generally considered as an N-limiting oligotrophic area with parts characterized by permanent deep thermocline and nutricline as the Melanesian Archipelago. However, ocean color imagery shows in this region a strong seasonal chlorophyll cycle, with large blooms which have for long been attributed to nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria as Trichodesmium. SeaWiFS surface chlorophyll analysis of the area between 5°S-25°S, 150°E-170°W has been conducted from 1997 to 2004. A strong seasonal and interannual variability is described, which relates well with the sea-truth measured chlorophyll concentrations. An empirical orthogonal function analysis helped in determining principal explicative factors of this variability, and in...

A step toward the definition of ecological indicators of the impact of fishing on the fish assemblage of the Abore reef reserve (New Caledonia) ArchiMer
Amand, Marion; Pelletier, Dominique; Ferrari, Jocelyne; Kulbicki, Michel.
Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are often contemplated as a tool for the sustainable management of exploited resources and ecosystem conservation. This paper proposes an approach to establish a statistical diagnostic of the effects of MPAs on fish assemblages, and define corresponding ecological indicators. This requires choosing relevant variables (abundance, diversity, demographic parameters..) and appropriate statistical methods. The study was based on data from the Abore reef Reserve in New Caledonia. Two sets of methods: 1-inferential linear models (ANOVA, GLM): 2- Partial Least Squares (PLS) methods of regression, were used to test the effects of this MPA. PLS enabled us to test simultaneously within a model, density, species richness, biomass and mean...

Development patterns of fringing and barrier reefs in New Caledonia (southwest Pacific) ArchiMer
Cabioch, G; Correge, T; Turpin, L; Castellaro, C; Recy, J.
In New Caledonia, core data indicate that the fringing reefs grew during the last interglacial and the Holocene, while the barrier reefs developed during several high sea level stands of the Quaternary. These growth periods are archived in a 128-m-long core from Ilot Amedee, offshore of Noumea. Directly upon the peridotitic substrate (reached at 126.50 m), a basal unit comprising abundant rhodoliths, molluscs and rare corals is characteristic of the pioneer stage of barrier reef development. Above it, a severely calcitized unit contains corals, molluscs and abundant micritic levels. Then, a sequence punctuated by several minor discontinuities and by a downward increase in diagenetic alteration is found. At 47 m core depth, a unit, which is thought to be...

Estimation des stocks de poissons des lagons de Nouvelle-Calédonie : 3 – Pression de pêche, rendements potentiels et impact sur les options d’aménagement ArchiMer
Labrosse, Pierre; Letourneur, Y; Kulbicki, M; Paddon, Jr.
The potential yields of demersal reefal and lagoonal finfish, which are valuable for trade or consumption in the Northern Province of New Caledonia, are unknown. Fishing pressure was estimated from tally-sheets of professional fishermen to assess trade fishing and a household consumption survey to assess subsistence fishing. Total yield was estimated to be 1 326 tonnes in 1995, 94 % of which correspond to subsistence fishing. Most of the catches were taken from the east and west coasts; in the north zone (Belep Archipelago) catches were very low. From this fishing pressure and the total stock values, the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) was estimated to be 12 600 t, which was about 10 % of the total stocks assessed in the Northern Province (138 300 t). This...

Meiofauna distribution in a mangrove forest exposed to shrimp farm effluents (New Caledonia) ArchiMer
Della Patrona, Luc; Marchand, C.; Hubas, C.; Molnar, N.; Deborde, J.; Meziane, T..
Meiofauna abundance, biomass and individual size were studied in mangrove sediments subjected to shrimp farm effluents in New Caledonia. Two strategies were developed: i) meiofauna examination during the active (AP) and the non-active (NAP) periods of the farm in five mangrove stands characteristics of the mangrove zonation along this coastline, ii) meiofauna examination every two months during one year in the stand the closest to the pond (i.e. Avicennia marina). Thirteen taxonomic groups of meiofauna were identified, with nematodes and copepods being the most abundant ones. Meiofauna abundance and biomass increased from the land side to the sea side of the mangrove probably as a result of the increased length of tidal immersion. Abundance of total...

Isolation and partial characterization of bacteria (Pseudoalteromonas sp.) with potential antibacterial activity from a marine costal environment from New Caledonia ArchiMer
Dufourcq, R.; Chalkiadakis, Eletherios; Fauchon, M.; Deslandes, Eric; Kerjean, V.; Chanteau, S.; Petit, Elodie; Guezennec, Jean; Dupont-rouzeyrol, M..
Marine bacteria are a rich source of bioactive metabolites. However, the microbial diversity of marine ecosystem still needs to be explored. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize bacteria with antimicrobial activities from various marine coastal environment of New Caledonia. We obtained 493 marine isolates from various environments and samples of which 63 (12.8%) presented an antibacterial activity against a panel of reference pathogenic strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis). Ten out of the most promising strains were cultured, fractionated and screened for antibacterial activity. Four of them (NC282, NC412, NC272 and NC120) showed at least an activity against reference and...

Effet des conditions environnementales sur le développement des pathologies à Vibrio dans les élevages de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues.
Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia is a developing industry, exclusively based on the species Litopenaeus stylirostris. However, it is subject to mortalities during grow out as observed all over the world. Since 1993, shrimp reared during the cold period are affected by a disease named "syndrome 93". As a consequence, the whole industry has become seasonal and produces essentially during the warm season. The climatic conditions during the periods of transition between the two main seasons could be responsible for an environmental stress and the origin reason for mortality outbreaks. Stocking density is the main risk factor. It increases the probability of the appearance and development of the epizooty in the pond. The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic...

Expériences sur l'influence des sédiments du bassin d'élevage sur la physiologie de Penaeus stylirostris. Rapport des travaux menés du 26 novembre au 7 décembre 1955 à la Station Saint Vincent ArchiMer
Cochard, Jean-claude; Goarant, Cyrille; Boglio, Eric; Lemonnier, Hugues.
The influence of the soil quality of culture pond on the physiological state of Penaeus stylirostris reared in earthen shrimp pond in New Caledonia was investigated by the measurement of the osmoregulatory capacity and magnesium hemolymph concentration of samples of 20 of these shrimp captured in the pond and maintained for 24 or 48h in cages laid on the bottom. A first experiment was affected by the occurrence of a pathology caused by Vibrio penaeicida probably due to initial handling stress. The second experiment showed that the osmoregulatory capacity is depresssed as a function of the soil quality : the more it is reduced the more the depression is important.

Phytoplankton dynamics in the southern New Caledonian lagoon during a southeast trade winds event ArchiMer
Neveux, Jacques; Lefebvre, Jean-pierre; Le Gendre, Romain; Dupouy, Cecile; Gallois, Francis; Courties, Claude; Gerard, Philippe; Fernandez, Jean-michel; Ouillon, Sylvain.
During the Echolag cruise (13 February-8 March 2007), the effect of 16-30 knot trade winds on abundance, community structure and dynamics of phytoplankton was investigated in the southern part of the New Caledonian coral reefs and surrounding oceanic waters. In this area, the coral reefs form two horn-like structures (hereinafter referred to as 'horn reefs'), oriented south-east, and separated by a relatively deep valley. Three repeated samplings at one week intervals of a 32 station array showed that trade winds induce surface water cooling and significant enrichment of mid- and bottom waters above the reef shelf. This enrichment appeared as the result of a general rise of the oceanic thermocline and nitracline due to the combination of trade winds and...

Evaluation de l’état de santé des habitats et peuplements de poissons de la zone de Voh-Koné-Pouembout, Campagnes de stations vidéo rotatives STAVIRO 2007-2013 ArchiMer
Giraud-carrier, Charlotte; Pelletier, Dominique.
• Conducted within the AMBIO project, this work deals with coral reef fish communities and associated habitats, in the New Caledonian lagoons. It aims at assessing the status and trends of habitats and mobile macrofauna in the Voh-Kone-Pouembout lagoon, in the light of demographic and industrial developments and accounting for the existing customary reserve of Oundjo. • It relies on 280 stations collected in 2007 and 2013 using the remote unbaited underwater video STAVIRO rotating technique, which were analysed to characterize habitat, fish assemblages, turtles and sea snakes, from a list of 490 species (AMBIO/A/1). • 143 species (including one turtle species and one sea snake species), belonging to 23 families were observed. The most frequent and abundant...

A white spot disease-like syndrome in the Pacific blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) as a form of bacterial shell disease ArchiMer
Goarant, Cyrille; Brizard, Raphael; Marteau, Anne-laure.
In May 1997, some white lesions evoking the white spot syndrome disease were observed in Litopenaeus stylirostris broodstock in New Caledonia. The occurrence of these lesions was neither associated with mortality, nor with histological evidence of white spot syndrome baculovirus (WSBV), The evidence suggests that these lesions result from a form of bacterial disease and are associated with an increased bacterial flora on the outer surface of the cuticle, as well as an increased incidence throughout the molt cycle. A microscopic observation of these lesions allows them to be differentiated from WSBV-associated lesions.

Des systèmes vidéo rotatifs pour étudier l'ichtyofaune : Applications à l’analyse des variations spatiales et temporelles dans le lagon de Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Mallet, Delphine.
Estimating diversity and abundance of fish is fundamental for the understanding of community structure and dynamics of coral reefs. Observations are generally gathered using Underwater Visual Census (UVC). These informations can also be collected by underwater video techniques involving no diver and allowing a high spatial and temporal coverage. The first part of this PhD thesis is a review of publications using underwater video techniques between 1952 and 2012. The second part present two rotating video systems used to study the diversity of ichthyofauna and habitats in the lagoon of New Caledonia: the STAVIRO (for "STAtion VIdeo ROtative") and the MICADO (for "Module d’Imagerie Côtier, Autonome pour le Développement de l’Observation sous-marine"). Rain-derived particles and CDOM distribution along the East Coast of New Caledonia ArchiMer
Dupouy, Cecile; Wattelez, Guillaume; Lefevre, Jerome; Juillot, Farid; Andreoli, Remi; Lille, Didier; Murakami, Hiroshi; Roettgers, Rudiger; Frouin, Robert.
Shortly after strong rains or tropical storms, chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla), turbidity, and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the lagoon of New Caledonia may be tripled. This effect is visible as far as 50 km offshore. The Eastern Coast of New Caledonia is more impacted than the Western Coast because of its geomorphological structure. Higher frequency and intensity of the rains, and the dominance of highly erosive lateritic formations resulted from deep weathering of ultramafic rocks. At the deeper parts of the lagoon (> 20 m), increases of Chla, turbidity, and CDOM absorption can be detected by satellite imagery with their plumes extending off shore as a result of wind-driven circulation in the lagoon. Such -increases agree with the...

Diazotrophs: a non-negligible source of nitrogen for the tropical coral Stylophora pistillata ArchiMer
Benavides, Mar; Houlbreque, Fanny; Camps, Mercedes; Lorrain, Anne; Grosso, Olivier; Bonnet, Sophie.
Corals aremixotrophs: they are able to fix inorganic carbon through the activity of their symbiotic dinoflagellates and to gain nitrogen from predation on plankton and uptake of dissolved organic and inorganic nutrients. They also live in close association with diverse diazotrophic communities, inhabiting their skeleton, tissue and mucus layer, which are able to fix dinitrogen (N-2). The quantity of fixed N-2 transferred to the corals and its distribution within coral compartments as well as the quantity of nitrogen assimilated through the ingestion of planktonic diazotrophs are still unknown. Here, we quantified nitrogen assimilation via (i) N-2 fixation by symbiont diazotrophs, (ii) ingestion of cultured unicellular diazotrophs and (iii) ingestion of...

Effect of water exchange on effluent and sediment characteristics and on partial nitrogen budget in semi-intensive shrimp ponds in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues; Faninoz, Sebastien.
An experiment was conducted in six earthen ponds with 20 shrimps m(-2) Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) during the warm season in New Caledonia to study the dynamics of wastes in relation with water exchange rate (WER). The nitrogen budget was established, taking into account the different forms of nitrogen in the water, sediment, feed and shrimp. Data from a wide range of treatments applied in unreplicated ponds were treated using regression analysis to establish the relationship between WER and partial nitrogen budget, sediment characteristics and shrimp performance. To compare effluent quality between treatments during the season, data were analysed using the non-parametric sign test. The water outflow was characterized by a decrease in the...

Mitigation of sea level rise effects by addition of sediment to shrimp ponds ArchiMer
Della Patrona, Luc; Beliaeff, Benoit; Pickering, T..
In New Caledonia barren salt-pans located landward to mangroves are used for the construction of shrimp ponds. The existing farms are jeopardized by the projected rise in the sea level, because the landward boundaries of ponds are situated at the elevation reached by spring tides. One low-cost strategy for mitigating the effects of sea level rise is to raise the level of the bottom of ponds. To test the effectiveness of such an adaptation, we built 4 experimental ponds in the low-lying zone of an existing 10 ha shrimp pond. The level of the bottom of 2 ponds was raised by adding about 15 cm of agricultural soil. Placing agricultural soil in the pond did not impair the functioning of the shrimp pond ecosystem. On the contrary, it resulted in unexpectedly...
