Bryophytes on rocky outcrops in the caatinga biome: a conservationist perspective Acta Botanica
Silva,Joan Bruno; Germano,Shirley Rangel.
In the state of Paraíba, Brazil, there is an abundance of rocky outcrops, which are typical elements of the semi-arid landscape. Those outcrops provide refuge to species with morphological adaptations to stressful climates and to rare communities of plants, including bryophytes. Nevertheless, there have been no studies of bryophytes in such habitats in the state. Therefore, this work aimed to inventory bryophytes on two outcrops in the municipality of Puxinanã, in Paraíba, addressing some of the ecological aspects of survival in xerophytic environments. Samples were collected once every two weeks from February 2010 to May 2011. The usual techniques of bryophyte sampling and herbarium preservation were employed. We recorded 21 bryophyte species (six...

On the taxonomic identity and conservation status of Campomanesia ilhoensis Mattos and C. viatoris Landrum (Myrtaceae) Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Marla Ibrahim Uehbe de; Funch,Ligia Silveira; Landrum,Leslie Roger.
(On the taxonomic identity and conservation status of Campomanesia ilhoensis Mattos and C. viatoris Landrum (Myrtaceae)). Based on a taxonomic study of Campomanesia Ruiz & Pavón in the state of Bahia, Brazil, we observed that C. ilhoensis Mattos and C. viatoris Landrum belong to the same taxonomic entity. Both names are legitimate and validly published; however, C. ilhoensis has priority over C. viatoris, which has been in use since 1984. In addition, the distribution of the more inclusive species is now known to extend from Bahia to Ceará. A new conservation status for this species is suggested because of a better knowledge of its distribution.

Marine influence in the Barreiras Formation, State of Alagoas, northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rossetti,Dilce F.; Góes,Ana M..
Tidal processes were important for deposition of the Barreiras Formation located in northern Brazil, while correlatable deposits in northeastern Brazil have been traditionally related to continental environments. Facies analysis in southern Alagoas revealed that the Barreiras Formation consists of cross-stratified conglomerates and sandstones (facies Sx and Cgx), compound cross-stratified sandstones (facies Cx), and heterolithic beddings (facies H). A significant portion of these deposits occurs within channel morphologies displaying fining and thinning upward successions. An abundance of sedimentary features is comparable to those from the northern Brazilian counterpart. These include: tidal bundles; herringbone cross-stratification; heterolithic beddings...

The Dasypodidae (Mammalia, Xenarthra) from the Urso Fóssil Cave (Quaternary), Parque Nacional de Ubajara, State of Ceará, Brazil: paleoecological and taxonomic aspects Anais da ABC (AABC)
OLIVEIRA,PAULO V.; RIBEIRO,ANA MARIA; OLIVEIRA,ÉDISON V.; VIANA,MARIA SOMÁLIA S..
This paper deals with xenarthrans osteoderms assigned toDasypus aff. D. novemcinctus,Euphractus sexcinctus and Cabassous sp. The material was collected in subsurface, from 0.10 to 0.60 m in the Urso Fóssil Cave, Parque Nacional de Ubajara, State of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. The ages of sediment samples from levels 4 and 5 (depths of 0.40 and 0.50 m) were determined by thermoluminescence technique, and indicated ages of 8,000 and 8,200 years BP for each layer respectively. The presence in these layers of early Holocene xenarthrans taxa can contribute to the understanding of the biotic evolution of the northwest region of Ceará during the last 10,000 years. Two of the three identified taxa still occur in the region: Dasypus novemcinctus andEuphractus...

C- and Sr-isotope stratigraphy of the São Caetano complex, Northeastern Brazil: a contribution to the study of the Meso-Neoproterozoic seawater geochemistry Anais da ABC (AABC)
Silva,Juan C.; Sial,Alcides N.; Ferreira,Valderez P.; Pimentel,Márcio M..
C-isotope and 87Sr/86Sr values for five carbonate successions from the São Caetano Complex, northeastern Brazil, were used to constrain their depositional age and to determine large variations in the C- and Sr-isotopic composition of seawater under the framework of global tectonic events. Three C-isotope stages were identified from base to top in a composed chemostratigraphic section: (1) stage in which delta13C values vary from +2 to +3.7‰ PDB and average 3‰ PDB, (2) stage with delta13C values displaying stronger oscillations (from -2‰ to +‰ PDB), and (3) stage with an isotopic plateau with values around +3.7‰ PDB. Constant 87Sr/86Sr values (~ 0.70600) characterize C-isotope stage 1, whereas slightly fluctuating values (from 0.70600 to 0.70700)...

Plankton diversity and limnological characterization in two shallow tropical urban reservoirs of Pernambuco State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Almeida,Viviane L.S.; Melão,Maria da Graça G.; Moura,Ariadne N..
Plankton diversity, physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a were analyzed in two shallow urban reservoirs with different trophic degrees on Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil. High eutrophication levels were observed in Apipucos reservoir, while Prata reservoir was considered oligotrophic. Values reported for physical and chemical variables and chlorophyll a differed among the studied ecosystems. Richness and plankton diversity were higher in Apipucos reservoir especially for phytoplankton. The presence of potential toxic Cyanophyceae in both reservoirs reflects a problem mainly to Prata reservoir, which is used for public water supply. Differences were observed for some variables among sites of study in Apipucos reservoir, while the...

In northeastern Brazil, the reduction of the natural forest cover to a series of small, isolated fragments has had negative consequences for the local avian fauna, in particular, a loss of the more specialized species, while the populations of some generalists have tended to increase. The present study focuses on the composition and trophic groups of a bird community on a farm in the northeastern Brazilian state of Alagoas. Monthly surveys were conducted between November 2008 and October 2009, based on mist-netting and systematic observations. Overall, 112 species were recorded, of which 76 were associated with the two forest fragments surveyed, while all the others were observed exclusively in the surrounding matrix of pasture and orchards. The bird...

Acritarchs of the Ediacaran Frecheirinha Formation, Ubajara Group, Northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Chiglino,Leticia; Gaucher,Claudio; Sial,Alcides N.; Ferreira,Valderez P..
We report for the first time the occurrence of organic-walled microfossils in Ediacaran limestones and marls of the Frecheirinha Formation, Ubajara Group, and the first Precambrian acritarchs so far reported for northeastern Brazil. The assemblage of the Frecheirinha Formation represents a low-diversity microflora comprising Leiosphaeridia, Lophosphaeridium and subordinated Bavlinella (=Sphaerocongregus). Their thermal alteration index (TAI) between 4+ and 5, suggests metamorphic temperatures exceeding 200-250°C. Higher temperatures are probably related to intruding granitic plutons (Meruoca, Mucambo). Reported δ13C values of carbonates of -3.5 ‰ VPDB (Vienna-Peedee Belemnite) at the base, passing up section into a positive plateau of up to +3.7 ‰, and...

Habitat Structural Effect on Squamata Fauna of the Restinga Ecosystem in Northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
DIAS,EDUARDO J.R.; ROCHA,CARLOS F.D..
In this work, we surveyed data on richness and composition of squamatan reptiles and habitat structural effect in nine areas of restinga ecosystem in the State of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. The “restinga” ecosystems are coastal sand dune habitats on the coast of Brazil. Our main hypothesis is that the Squamata fauna composition along these restinga areas would be modulated by habitat structural. After 90 days of field sampling we recorded approximately 5% of reptile species known in Brazil. The composition of Squamata assemblages varied mainly based on the presence or absence of lizards of the genera Ameivula and Tropidurus. Our data showed that habitat structure consistently affected the composition of local Squamata fauna, especially lizards.

Occurrence of sea turtles during seismic surveys in Northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Parente,Cristiano Leite; Lontra,Juliana Doyle; Araújo,Maria Elisabeth de.
There are seven species of sea turtles around the world. Among these, five visit the northeast coast of Brazil to reproduce and feed. These sea turtles are impacted by human activity and need conservation measures. The seismic survey is one of these activities due to its high intensity and low frequency sound emissions in the marine environment. Records of sea turtles during seismic surveys in shallow waters of the northeast of Brazil between 2002 and 2003 are presented in this study with some discussion about the effectiveness of the monitoring procedures. Three species of sea turtle were recorded within the seismic survey areas. The Chelonia mydas species was the most commonly sighted turtle. There was only one record of Caretta caretta and Lepidochelys...
