The effects of salinity on growth and survival of mangrove seedlings changes with age Acta Botanica
Kodikara,Kodikara Arachchilage Sunanda; Jayatissa,Loku Pullukuttige; Huxham,Mark; Dahdouh-Guebas,Farid; Koedam,Nico.
ABSTRACT Six wide-ranging mangrove species, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Avicennia marina, A. officinalis, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, and B. sexangula, were selected to study the growth and survival of seedlings under three contrasting salinity treatments over a 30-week period: low (3-5psu), moderate (15-17psu) and high (33-36psu). Seedlings grown under high salinity exhibited significantly lower performance (p<0.05) in survival rates, cumulative shoot height, mean growth rates, mean total leaf area, and mean dry weight, compared to those under low and moderate salinity regimes. The low salinity treatment provided the best conditions for initial establishment and growth of the seedlings of all species until 15-20 weeks of age. However, the same...

Trophic interactions in the coastal ecosystem of Sri Lanka: An ECOPATH preliminary approach ArchiMer
Haputhantri, S; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Moreau, J.
This study attempts to assemble and summarize existing information in order to build a general representation of the trophic interactions within the shallow coastal ecosystem of Sri Lanka. A multispecific ecosystem-based approach on trophic relationships and their possible variations was performed using ECOPATH. Thirty-nine functional groups were considered representing all trophic levels in the food web. Time-dynamic simulation was carried out using the ECOSIM routine to evaluate the impact of the 1998 El Nino event on key functional groups. Results show that the time needed for any impacted functional group to recover to its initial abundance increased with the trophic level. Two time-series data sets derived from commercial catch and effort statistics...

On the Prediction of Personal Stature from Cranial Dimensions International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,Isurani.
Dimensional relationship between body segments and stature has been the focus of scientists for many years. All such studies were based on the fact that body segments exhibit consistent ratios relative to the stature and these ratios are linked to age, gender and race. Racial characters are best defined in the skull. Therefore, prediction of stature from cranial remains is vital in establishing the identity of an unknown individual. Despite its significance, little is known concerning the cranial dimensions in Sri Lankans. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the relationship and to propose a gender and age specific linear regression model between the cranial dimensions and height of an individual. A total of 400 subjects with an age span of 20-23...

An investigation into the taxonomy of Dendrelaphis tristis (Daudin, 1803): revalidation of Dipsas schokari (Kuhl, 1820) (Serpentes, Colubridae) Naturalis
Rooijen, J. van; Vogel, G..
The taxonomic status of the colubrid snake Dendrelaphis tristis (Daudin, 1803) was investigated on the basis of morphological data taken from 64 museum specimens. Univariate and multivariate analyses of these data reveal that Dendrelaphis tristis is composed of two species. One of these species agrees with the description of Dipsas schokari Kuhl, 1820 which is revalidated in the combination Dendrelaphis schokari (Kuhl, 1820). The syntypes of D. schokari have been lost and a type for D. tristis has never been deposited in a collection. Neotypes are designated and described for both species in order to stabilize the names. D. schokari differs from D. tristis in having a lower number of ventrals and subcaudals, a larger eye, a shorter vertebral stripe and the...

Possible Rumphius specimens detected in Paul Hermann’s Ceylon herbarium (1672–1679) in Leiden, The Netherlands Naturalis
Andel, T.R. van; Mazumdar, J.; Barth, E.N.T.; Veldkamp, J.F..
Georg Eberhard Rumphius (1627–1702), author of the monumental work Herbarium Amboinense (1741–1755) is seen as the undisputed patriarch of Malesian Natural Sciences. Until recently, it was thought that if Rumphius had collected any specimens, they all had been lost. The recent digitisation and revision of two book herbaria in Leiden collected by Paul Hermann (1646–1695) on Ceylon revealed four specimens with reference to either Rumphius or Ambon in Hermann’s handwriting: Colocasia esculenta, Gomphrena globosa, Helminthostachys zeylanica and Biophytum sensitivum, of which the latter does not occur in Sri Lanka. Here we discuss the description of these species in both published and unpublished historic works and consider the possibility that they may...

Throughout the world, infections with the Babesia and Theileria parasites often result in economically significant clinical disease in cattle. We conducted a longitudinal survey of Babesia and Theileria infections in cattle from the Polonnaruwa (n?=?75; dry zone) and Nuwara Eliya (n?=?161; wet zone) districts of Sri Lanka. DNA from blood samples collected in June, September, and December 2014 and March 2015 was screened for Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Theileria annulata and Theileria orientalis using specific polymerase chain reactions (PCRs). Additionally, serum samples collected from the animals were screened using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) to detect B. bovis- and B. bigemina-specific antibodies. All of the animals surveyed in...

Feed utilization and improving management on small scale dairy farms in the Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka OAK
KUBOTA, Satoko; KATO, Yumiko; KONO, Hiroichi; KARUNAGODA, Kamal; 窪田, さと子; 加藤, 弓子; 耕野, 拓一; カルナゴダ, カマル.
In Sri Lanka coconut poonac, a byproduct produced from the coconut oil production process, is being used for feeding dairy cattle. Though poonac is cheaper than formula feed, it is feared that the bad effects of cattle health due to its high fat content. This study clarified the economic effect of poonac feeding on dairy farming. We conducted interview survey with 40 small-scale farms in Kurunegala District, and analyzed the relationship among poonac feeding, cattle disease rate, raw milk production and dairy farming income by using the multiple regression analysis. The risk of cattle disease increased as poonac feeding. On the other hand, participation in the feeding training was effective in reducing outbreaks of disease in dairy cattle. Moreover, we...

Changing Abundance of Elephants and Willingness to Pay for their Conservation AgEcon
Bandara, Ranjith; Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper explores the way in which the stated willingness to pay for the conservation of Asian elephants in Sri Lanka varies with hypothetical variations in their abundance. To do that, it relies on results from a sample of residents of Colombo. The willingness to pay function is found to be unusual. It increases at an increasing rate for hypothetical reductions in the elephant population compared to its current level (a level that makes the Asian elephant endangered) and also increases at a decreasing rate for increases in this population from its current level. Rational explanations are given for this relationship. The relationship is, however, at odds with relationships suggested in some of the literature for total economic value as a function of...

Willingness to pay for different degrees of Abundance of Elephants AgEcon
Bandara, Ranjith; Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper presents an application of the contingent valuation method (CVM) to determine how the willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation of Asian elephants varies with hypothetical variations in their population. Results from a CVM survey of a sample of urban residents in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka are used for this purpose. We find, consistent with the basic principles of consumer demand theory, the marginal change in the respondents’ WTP amounts is positive but appears to diminish in parallel to the increases in the current wild elephant population (CWEP). In contrast to theoretical expectations, however, we find that the WTP for preserving this species increases at an increasing rate in relation to decreases in the CWEP. This is probably...

Willingness to Pay for Conservation of the Asian Elephant in Sri Lanka: A Contingent Valuation Study AgEcon
Bandara, Ranjith; Tisdell, Clement A..
Results from a CVM survey of willingness to pay for the conservation of the Asian elephant of a sample of urban residents in three selected housing schemes in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, are reported. Face– to–face surveys were conducted using an interview schedule. A non-linear logit regression model was constructed to analyse the respondents’ responses for the payment principle questions and to identify the factors that influence their responses. We investigate whether urban residents’ WTP for the conservation of elephants is sufficient to compensate farmers for the damage caused by elephants, and consequently to raise farmers’ tolerance of the presence of elephants on the farming fields. We find that beneficiaries (the urban residents) could...
