Redundant Actuation of Parallel Manipulators InTech
Andreas Mueller.
In this chapter the dynamics modeling of redundantly actuated PKM is reviewed, and the redundancy resolution is addressed. The resolution takes into account different secondary tasks, such as backlash avoidance and stiffness control. It was aimed to point out the potential of redundant actuation, but also the challenges that need to be addressed. In this contribution the effect of kinematic parameter uncertainties on the control of redundantly actuated PKM is analyzed. It is shown how geometric uncertainties effect the control system. The application of standard model-based control schemes to redundantly actuated PKM is...

Attitude Control of a Six-Legged Robot in Consideration of Actuator Dynamics by Optimal Servo Control System InTech
H. Uchida; K. Nonami.
In the present study, we examined the attitude control method considering the delay of the hydraulic actuator whereby the mine detection six-legged robot can realize stable walking on irregular terrain without to make an orbit of the foot for irregular terrain. The following results were obtained. (1) As an attitude control method considering the delay of the actuator of the thigh links, we derive a mathematical model in which the inputs are the driving torque of the thigh links in the supporting legs and the outputs are the height of the body, the pitching angle, and the rolling angle. (2) The 3rd-order delay system is approximated as a 2nd-order delay system, and an optimal servo

Desk study on the control of weeds in organic arable and horticultural production systems OF0152 Organic Eprints
Anon,.
The Ministry is seeking to encourage an expansion of organic farming with a research programme to provide information of benefit to organic farmers and to policy makers. The lack of a reliable and effective weed control system that does not rely on herbicides, has been highlighted as the major problem in limiting the growth of organic farming in the UK. Studies have been made that are aimed specifically at developing organic weed control techniques. There has also been work on non-chemical methods for dealing with weeds in conventional systems. Research in weed biology, population dynamics, and competition modelling from conventional systems also provide valuable information for...

Optimal control of a stochastic biological invasion AgEcon
Chalak, Morteza; Pannell, David J..
Although there have been numerous studies on the economics of weed control, relatively few of these studies have focused on natural ecosystems. The aims of this papers are: A) to identify the combination of control options that is optimal for blackberry (Rubus anglocandicans) in Australian natural ecosystems, B) to assess whether an integrated control strategy is superior to chemical-only strategies, C) to evaluate the economic net benefits of specific biologically oriented control methods (a rust and grazing by goats), D) to determine how changes in model parameters affect the optimal

An Investment Analysis Approach to Examining Bio-Control of Invasive Weeds AgEcon
Smith, Elwin G.; Young, Douglas L..
Invasive weeds are a large problem on large tracts of rangeland in North America. Biological methods of control have been instituted, but many information gaps remain. An investment model approach is used to demonstrate some of the potentially key pieces of biological data that are required for an analysis. This model is applied to the control of leafy spurge on rangeland. The results of control are very dependent on the rate of spread and control by the biological control agent, the initial density of the weed, and the recovery of the forage (grass) after the weed has been controlled....

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CONTROLLING LEAFY SPURGE WITH SHEEP AgEcon
Bangsund, Dean A.; Nudell, Daniel J.; Sell, Randall S.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.), a widely established exotic, noxious, perennial weed, is a major threat to rangeland and wildland in the Upper Great Plains. Chemical, biological, and cultural control methods have limitations in their applicability and effectiveness in treating leafy spurge. However, many of the constraints prohibiting the use of herbicides, tillage, and biological controls do not apply to sheep grazing. Sheep grazing, while known to be effective in controlling leafy spurge since the 1930s, has lacked widespread adoption as a leafy spurge control. A deterministic, bioeconomic model, incorporating relationships between sheep grazing and leafy spurge

Biological control of fruit flies in Brazil. Repositório Alice
PARANHOS, B. A. J.; NAVA, D. E.; MALAVASI, A..
Fruit flies are the main pests of fruit growing in Brazil. They have been managed predominantly with the use of insecticides applied as cover spray and/or as toxic baits. Currently, the trend of management strategies is toward the adoption of methods that cause the lowest environmental impact in large areas. In this context, biological control is an excellent option to be used together with other management strategies, such as sterile insects, because it leaves no residues, does not disturb nontarget pests, and can be permanent if the natural enemy establishes itself in the field. This review paper addresses the current knowledge on the biological control of fruit flies in Brazil,...

Multipurpose Low-Cost Humanoid Platform and Modular Control Software Development InTech
Filipe Silva; Vítor Santos.
In this chapter we have described the development and integration of hardware and software components to build a small-size humanoid robot based on off-the-shelf technologies. A modular design is conceived to ensure easy maintenance and faster reproducibility. The most relevant feature of this implementation includes the distributed architecture in which independent and self-contained control units may allow either a cooperative or a standalone operation. The integration in these simpler control units of sensing, processing and acting capabilities play a key role towards localised control based on feedback from several sensors. The adoption of an outer...

Combining physical, cultural and biological methods: prospects for integrated non-chemical weed management strategies Organic Eprints
Hatcher, Lecturer Paul; Melander, Senior scientist Bo.
Physical, cultural and biological methods for weed control have developed largely independently and are often concerned with weed control in different systems: physical and cultural control in annual crops and biocontrol in extensive grasslands. We discuss the strengths and limitations of four physical and cultural methods for weed control: mechanical, thermal, cutting, and intercropping, and the advantages and disadvantages of combining biological control with them. These physical and cultural control methods may increase soil nitrogen levels and alter...

Cooperation, Spatial-Dynamic Externalities, and Invasive Species Management AgEcon
Epanchin-Niell, Rebecca S.; Wilen, James E..
Most terrestrial biological invasions occur in landscapes comprising numerous, independently managed properties. Thus, control of invasion spread generally depends on the choices of many managers, each deciding the extent to control invasions on their property. Here we develop a spatially-explicit, integrated model of invasion spread and human behavior to examine how people’s control choices under laissez-faire affect patterns of invasion spread and the total costs and damages imposed by an invader. We evaluate how characteristics of the bioeconomic and social system, including the extent of cooperation among managers, affect the divergence between...
