Parameterization of MRP for Supply Planning Under Lead Time Uncertainties InTech
A. Dolgui; F. Hnaien; A. Louly; H. Marian.
We studied an MRP parameterization problem for assembly systems under component lead time uncertainties. This problem of inventory control and production planning under uncertainties is crucial for industry. Most publications are devoted to customer demand uncertainties. In contrast, lead time uncertainties seem not be sufficiently studied, in particular, for the control of component inventories for assembly systems with random component procurement times (lead times). Nevertheless, many of industrial applications exist where the component lead times are random. For the case of assembly systems with random lead times and a random demand, if the demand and component lead times are...

Robotic Long Bone Fracture Reduction InTech
A. E. Graham; S. Q. Xie; K. C. Aw; W. L. Xu; S. Mukherjee.
This research into a medical robot for realigning fractured bones aims to develop the interface, robot, and database technologies to improve the working situation for users and outcome for recipients. Compared with other approaches to fracture reduction, the system being developed here has a number of novel features. The geometric modeling has been effective in allowing a surgeon to visualize the fractured bone and has not been reported elsewhere for fracture reduction to the authors knowledge. By displaying the images to users in this form any mental strain they would face from reconstructing images can be removed. In addition to this, modeling of the forces during reduction has provided a means to determine the requirement for a robotic device....

Development of chitosan-glucose and chitosan-citric complexes edible coating to improve tomatoes post-harvest quality CIGR Journal
A., El-Beltagy; Eissa, Ayman H. Amer; S., El-Sayed.
The effect of different shrimp chitosan molecular weights as well as shrimp chitosan complexes (chitosan-glucose and chitosan-citric) on the quality characteristics of the stored (at 7°C±2°C and 90% RH) tomato fruits (Lycopersicum esculentum) was investigated.  Coating tomatoes with high molecular weight chitosan (H.M.C.G) significantly improved firmness and weight loss.  The lowest weight loss was found in high molecular weight chitosan-glucose (H.M.C.G) treatment followed by the fruits coated with high molecular weight chitosan (HMC) and then uncoated tomato fruits.  Both molecular weights was clear on retarding the total acidity loss especially for stored tomato fruit coated with low molecular weight chitosan, while

Evaluation of chloride mass balance and recharge in agricultural lands in Nigeria CIGR Journal
A Sobowale; Department of Agricultural and Bio-Resources Engineering, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria; A A Ramalan; O J Mudiare; M A Oyebode.
Groundwater salinization studies and recharge estimation was carried out at the Irrigation Research Station, Kadawa, Nigeria. Groundwater samples from fifteen randomly selected piezometer locations were analyzed monthly for chloride using Mohr’s method for three years while recharge was estimated using the chloride mass balance (CMB) method. Groundwater chloride range from 22 - 91.4 mg/l, seasonal trend was identified with the hot dry season (April – June) having higher values than the wet season (July – October). Correlation analysis revealed chloride status that is not associated with one another in all soil types while salt build up was observed at the south western tip of the farmland indicating potential reduction of agricultural productivity. CMB...

Final Report for the CORE Organic II funded project "Restrictive use of antibiotics in organic animal farming – a potential for safer, high quality products with less antibiotic resistant bacteria - SafeOrganic" Organic Eprints
Aabo, Søren.
• The level of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from organic vs. conventional pigs has been compared for approximate 25 herds of each production system in DK, FR, IT and SE, by sampling faeces at farm or colon content at slaughterhouse from two pigs per herd. • An E. coli isolate was obtained from each sample and subjected to analysis of MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values for comparison of the resistance towards 10 antibiotics between production systems. Resistance to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphonamides, tetracycline and trimethoprim was most common – ranging from 14% to 75% of E. coli isolates from conventional pigs and from 1% to 46% of isolates from organic pigs. The resistance towards these five antibiotics varied markedly between...

CHEAP TALK REVISITED: NEW EVIDENCE FROM CVM AgEcon
Aadland, David; Caplan, Arthur J..
Two recent studies have shown that "cheap talk" is an effective means of eliminating positive hypothetical bias in experimental and field-auction settings. We further investigate the ability of cheap talk to mitigate positive hypothetical bias in a CVM phone survey administered to over 4,000 households. Positive hypothetical bias is detected in our data by contrasting revealed and stated preference information. However, a short, neutral cheap-talk script appears to exacerbate rather than mitigate the bias. Based on this and mixed evidence from earlier studies, we suggest caution in using cheap talk as an ex ante control for hypothetical bias.

Heat and moisture production in growing-finishing pigs and broilers CIGR Journal
Aarnink-FBC, Andre.
Heat and moisture production are important parameters for designing ventilation and climate control systems in livestock housing. In 2002 a report was published of the CIGR Section II Working Group on Climatization of Animal Houses ‘Heat and moisture production at animal and house levels’ with formula to calculate heat and moisture production for different livestock categories. The objective of this paper is to discuss these CIGR formula for growing-finishing pigs and broilers. Results from calculated heat and moisture production with the relatively simple formula in the CIGR report were compared with results from a more comprehensive model. From this comparison the following conclusions were drawn: 1) The relatively...

Genetic diversity analysis of isolates of the fungal bean pathogen Pseudocercospora griseola from central and southern Brazil. Repositório Alice
ABADIO, A. K. R.; LIMA, S. S.; SANTANA, M. F.; SALOMÃO, T. M. F.; SARTORATO, A.; MIZUBUTI, E. S. G.; ARAÚJO, E. F.; QUEIROZ, M. V. de..
Planting resistant varieties is the most effective control measure against the angular leaf spot of dry beans, a fungal disease caused by Pseudocercospora griseola. However, dry bean varieties with durable resistance are not easily obtained. Knowledge about the genetic variability of the pathogen population is key for the success of dry bean breeding programs aimed at developing resistant materials, but finding suitable operationally simple and genetically accurate markers is not an easy task. The aim of this study was to assess the suitability of the ISSR-PCR technique to quantify the genetic variability of P. griseola isolates. Total DNA of 27 P. griseola isolates from Goiás, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and Paraná...

Cytotoxicity of fumonisin B1 : implication of lipid peroxidation and inhibition of protein and DNA syntheses Inra
Abado-Becognée, K.; Mobio, T.A.; Ennamany, R.; Fleurat-Lessard, T.; Shier, W.T.; Badria, F.; Creppy, E.E..
The effects of fumonisin B1 (FB1) from Fusarium moniliforme on lipid peroxidation and protein and DNA syntheses were studied in monkey kidney cells (Vero cells). FB1 was found to be a potent inducer of malondialdehyde (MDA), one of the secondary products formed during lipid peroxidation. At 0.14 μM (0.1 μg/ml), FB1 induced 0.496 ± 0.1 nmoles of MDA/mg protein, compared to the control level 0.134 ± 0.01 nmoles of MDA/mg protein (P < 0.005). No inhibition of protein or DNA synthesis was observed at this concentration of FB1. Inhibition of protein and DNA syntheses was observed at FB1 concentrations >14 μM (10 μg/ml) with an IC50 of 33 μM for both protein synthesis and DNA synthesis. These results indicate that lipid...
