Correlation between serum levels of interleukins 10 and 12 and thrombocytopenia in hepatitis C cirrhotic (class A) patients J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Abdallah,N; Abdel Aziz,HK; Hamed,NA; Gamal,M.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients commonly have low platelet counts; however, the exact role of HCV infection in thrombocytopenia is unknown. This work aimed to study the serum levels of interleukins (IL) 10 and 12 in patients with mild and moderate thrombocytopenia associated with chronic hepatitis C infection. Our study included 15 patients with chronic HCV infection and newly diagnosed isolated autoimmune thrombocytopenia (Group I) and 15 patients with chronic HCV infection and normal platelet count as controls (Group II). All patients were examined for personal history and clinical aspects, complete blood count, bone marrow aspiration, liver function tests, HCV antibody assay by ELISA and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), abdominal ultrasound,...

Evaluation of prognostic value of cell adhesion molecules in chronic hepatitis C therapy J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Abdallah,N; Morsi,M; Hamed,N; Abdel Aziz,H.
The most reliable determination of severity and prognosis in chronic viral hepatitis is the histological staging of the disease, which comprises an invasive procedure and is often not well accepted by patients. The search for alternative non-invasive methods is mandatory especially in follow-ups after initial assessment by biopsy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in patients under interferon alpha therapy whether responsive or non-responsive to therapy. Thirty chronic hepatitis C patients (CHC) under combined therapy of interferon-α with ribavirin, whether responsive or non-responsive, were included in the study as well as ten healthy controls. Serum...

Abdelghani Chakhchar; Abderrahim Ferradous; Mouna Lamaoui; Said Wahbi; Cherkaoui El Modafar.
_Argania spinosa_ L. Skell, a tree endemic of Morocco, grows in semiarid and arid areas. Biochemical response to drought in four ecotypes of the _A. spinosa_ was compared. Choice of ecotypes was based on evident differences in geographical features in south-west Morocco: two coastal ecotypes (Essaouira and Agadir) and two paralittorale ecotypes (Aoulouz and Lakhssas). Lipid peroxidation (malonyldialdehyde (MDA)), content of endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and antioxidant enzyme system (Catalase (CAT), Ascorbate peroxidase (APX), Total peroxidase (POD) and Polyphenoloxidase (PPO) were measured in control (100% relative humidity (RH) at field capacity (FC)) and water-stressed plants (50 and 25% RH at FC). For all...

Inductive Approaches Based on Trial/Error Paradigm for Communications Network InTech
Abdelhamid Mellouk.
Due to the growing needs in telecommunications (VoD, Video-Conference, VoIP, etc.) and the diversity of transported flows, communication networks does not meet the requirements of the future integrated-service networks that carry multimedia data traffic with a high QoS. The main drivers of this evolution are the continuous growth of the bandwidth requests, the promise of cost improvements and finally the possibility of increasing profits by offering new services. First, it does not support resource reservation which is primordial to guarantee an end-to-end Qos (bounded delay, bounded delay jitter, and/or bounded loss ratio). Second, data packets may be subjected to unpredictable delays and thus may arrive at their destination after the expiration time,...

Pleiotropic effect of sex expression on fruit shape in melon National Institute of Agronomic Research
Abdelmohsin, M.E.; Pitrat, M..
In melon, monoecy is conferred by the dominant allele A. Many melon cultivars of different horticultural groups are andromonoecious, a/a. For facilitating commercial production of F1 hybrid seeds, a monoecious female parent would be quite useful. However, monoecy is almost always associated with a larger length-todiameter ratio of the fruit. We have tested the hypothesis that monoecy itself, allele A, is responsible for the change in fruit shape by using two sets of monoecious/andromonoecious near-isogenic lines: one derived by backcrossing A from a monoecious donor using the andromonoecious ‘Charentais T’ as the recurrent parent and one using the residual heterozygosity (H-NIL) after 6 generations of selfpollinating in a recombinant inbred line...

Antinociceptive effects of the essential oil of Croton nepetaefolius on mice BJMBR
Abdon,A.P.V.; Leal-Cardoso,J.H.; Coelho-de-Souza,A.N.; Morais,S.M.; Santos,C.F..
Croton nepetaefolius Baill., is an aromatic plant native to the northeast of Brazil where it is extensively used in folk medicine as a sedative, orexigen and antispasmodic agent. In the present study the antinociceptive effects of the essential oil of C. nepetaefolius (EOCn), administered orally, were evaluated in male Swiss mice (20-25 g). In the acetic acid-induced writhing test, EOCn (100 and 300 mg/kg; N = 14 and N = 12, respectively) was effective at the highest dose. In the hot-plate test, EOCn at 30 and 300 mg/kg, but not at 3 mg/kg, significantly increased the latency at all observation times up to the 180th min (N = 12 for each dose). In the formalin test, EOCn significantly reduced paw licking in the second phase of the test at 100 mg/kg (N =...

Dynamic Modelling and Adaptive Traction Control for Mobile Robots InTech
Abdulgani Albagul; Wahyudi Martono; Riza Muhida.
In this paper two control strategies are developed, and tested on the robot. The `low' level controller performance deteriorated with the changes in the surface condition such as the traction condition (friction coefficient). Meanwhile the combined controller detects the changes and copes with them in an adequate manner, maintaining a largely consistent performance. Some of the issues concerning the environmental structure and the high level control have been presented. Determining the location of the mobile robot plays a vital role in maintaining fast, smooth path-tracking. Measuring the position of the robot in the workspace gives the high level controller an indication of whether the...

The effects of 4-nonylphenol contamination on livers of Tilapia fish (Oreochromus spilurs) in Jeddah Biol. Res.
Abdulla Bin-Dohaish,El-jawaher.
Alkylphenol polyethoxylates is a group of estrogenic compounds. Natural or synthetic types of these compounds react with the endocrine system by binding hormone receptors, resulting in interference with their action, which is why they are called endocrine disrupting chemicals. Among their hydrolytic products are nonylphenols (NP), which are considered pollutants of aquatic environments. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pathological alterations on liver tissue of fish exposed to these compounds for long durations, starting from beginning of life and during the period of sexual maturity. Tilapia fish were obtained from Abhur fish farms, reared in the laboratory in special basins, and divided into two groups. The first maternal group was...

The role of speech in the user interface : perspective and application IRD
Abewusi, A.B..
Consideration must be given to the implication of speech as a communication medium before deciding to use speech input or output in an interactive environment. There are several effective control strategies for improving the quality of speech. The utility of the speech has been demonstrated by application to several illustrative problems where their application has proved effective despite all the limitation of synthetic speech output and automatic speech recognition systems. What is the socio-economic value of the wetlands fisheries? The case of Yala Wetland in Kenya OceanDocs
Abila, R.O.; Othina, A..
Wetlands in most parts of the world are under threat of over-exploitation partly because their socio-economic value is not well known. Yala Wetland, the largest freshwater wetland in Kenya, with a large part of it bordering Lake Victoria’s shoreline, faces even greater threats of extinction. This wetland measures about 17,500 ha and is host to a number of indigenous fish species, animals and plants which are exploited by the local communities for subsistence and commercial purposes. There has been pressure to reclaim portions of this wetland for agricultural activity. So far, 2,300 ha has, indeed, been drained for commercial agriculture. Furthermore, it is difficult to control effort in the exploitation of the remaining...
