Effect of prestorage curing on storage life, internal and external qualities of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Aborisade,Abiola Titilola; Ajibade,Ayodeji Adeyeye.
Orange fruits from two seasons, in April and August 2006 representing late 2005 and early 2006 harvests respectively were cured in hot air at 36-37(0)C to 1%, 3%, 5% and 7% weight loss before storage at 28(0)C and 86% relative humidity (RH). The fruits were observed for incidence of decay, further weight loss, juice content, firmness or softening of the peel, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, titratable acidity, and colour during storage. Curing reduced the incidence of decay. All control fruits were rotten by day 21 in August harvest while 22.5% of the control was rotten by day 56 in the April harvest. Storage life was extended beyond 56 days in fruits cured with 1, 3, 5 and 7% in April...

Enhancement of abdominal wall defect repair using allogenic platelet-rich plasma with commercial polyester/cotton fabric (Damour) in a canine model OAK
Abouelnasr, Khaled; Hamed, Mohamed; Lashen, Samah; El-Adl, Mohamed; Rasha, Eltaysh; Tagawa, Michihito.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has an important role in musculoskeletal surgery; however, it has been underutilized for accelerating the healing of abdominal wall defects in veterinary practice. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the use of commercial polyester/cotton fabric (Damour) as a new composite mesh for the repair of experimentally induced abdominal wall defects in canine models, and to investigate the possible role of PRP for improving such repair and reducing allied complications. For this purpose, abdominal wall defects were created in 24 healthy mongrel dogs and then repaired with mesh alone (control group) or mesh and allogenic PRP (PRP group). Dogs were euthanized after 2 or 4 months for gross...

Control of Driver Whole-Body Vibration Ride Comfort in Agricultural Tractor CIGR Journal
Abouel-seoud, Shawki Abdel-hady.
Abstract: For today vehicles, ride comfort and dynamic control, are crucial criteria for customers and also for the selection of an appropriate vehicle. Tractors as vehicles are exposed to random vibrations caused by unevenness of road or soil profile, moving elements within the tractor or implements, while setting on a rigid seat without a backrest.  Whole-body vibration transmission influences comfort, performance, and long-term health of the operator. This current study is to evaluate and controlled an agricultural tractor whole-body vibration comfort efficiency, which constitutes one aspect of the physical environment that can cause discomfort to operators, based on standard mathematical formulae and frequency...

Abou-Hala,Andréia Zarzour; Barbosa,Daniella Galvão; Marcos,Rodrigo Labat; Pacheco-Soares,Cristina; Silva,Newton Soares da.
In this study the effects of infrared lamp illumination during the muscle fatigue process was studied. Three different groups (n=5) were used: one control group and two treated (Infrared Lamp 780-1400nm), with the energy densities of 0.5 and 1.0 J/cm² and time of illumination of 300 seconds. The treated animals were illuminated in one point directly in the tibialis muscle, after the first tetanic contraction out of six, with an interval between each tetany. The results were registered in an electrophysiograph and the intensity of the force of contraction in grams was analysed. It was observed that the control group presented a reduction in the intensity of the force of contraction, while...

Weed Control in Clean Agriculture: A Review1 Planta Daninha
ABOUZIENA,H.F.; HAGGAG,W.M..
ABSTRACT Weed control is consider the major obstacle for the growers in the organic farming. Lower plant productivity in organic farming mainly related to the poor weed control. It is widely known, in most cases, that losses caused by weeds exceeded the losses from any category of agricultural pests. Under water-stress condition, weeds can reduce crop yields more than 50% through moisture competition alone. In the light of the environmental and toxicological problems created by herbicides, it has become necessary to develop the safety methods for controlling weeds. Soil Solarization, Mulching, Biodegradable Mulch, Natural Herbicides, Hot Water, and Agronomic Practices have been...

The Performance of Compliance Measures and Instruments for Nitrate Nonpoint Pollution Control Under Uncertainty and Alternative Agricultural Commodity Policy Regimes AgEcon
Abrahams, Nii Adote; Shortle, James S..
Following Weitzman (1974), there is ample theoretical literature indicating that choice of pollution control instruments under conditions of uncertainty will affect the expected net benefits that can be realized from environmental protection. However, there is little empirical research on the ex ante efficiency of alternative instruments for controlling water, or other types of pollution, under uncertainty about costs and benefits. Using a simulation model that incorporates various sources of uncertainty, the ex ante efficiency of price and quantity controls applied to two alternative policy targets, fertilizer application rates and estimated excess nitrogen applications, are examined under varying assumptions about...

Cognitive Approach to Control in Ill-Structured Situation and the Problem of Risks InTech
Abramova N.A.; Avdeeva Z.K.; Kovriga S. V..
Experience of applying of various models and methods on the basis of cognitive approach (in Russia and abroad), as well as increasing interest of practical specialists to developments in this directions show expediency of development of this approach in control. At that, we should note some unsolved (or partially solved) problems. The problem of risks due to the human factor in the field of formal methods of searching and making decisions in the control of complex and ill-structured situations is considered as the general problem for diverse models of subject-matter experts' knowledge and related formal methods (Abramova & Novikov, 2006; Abramova, 2007a). The effect of essential oils of sweet fennel and pignut on mortality and learning in africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Neotropical Entomology
Abramson,Charles I.; Wanderley,Paulo A.; Wanderley,Maria J.A.; Silva,José C.R.; Michaluk,Lynnette M..
It was recently discovered that exposure to small concentrations of the essential oils of sweet fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill) or pignut [Hyptis suaveolens (L.) Poit] can be used to control aphids. What is not known is whether these oils also influence honeybee behavior. Experiments using both harnessed and free-flying foragers at concentrations used to control aphids showed that bees readily associated the odors with a reward, discriminated between them, and were not repelled. Honeybees, however, would not consume the oils when mixed with sucrose to create an unconditioned stimulus. An experiment in which harnessed bees consumed various concentrations showed that concentrations greater...

Abramson,Charles Ira; Wanderley,Paulo Alves; Miná,Alexandre José Soares; Wanderley,Maria José Araújo.
This research was aimed at obtaining data about earwig behavior (Marava arachidis Y.) on fennel agro-ecosystems and evaluating its potential capacity to access plants in the absence of aphids under laboratory and field conditions. This study establishes a baseline to evaluate earwigs as biological controls to combat aphids that attack fennel plants. Two experiments were developed. In experiment 1, earwigs were studied under laboratory conditions, in experiment 2 under field conditions. Independent variables were sex, exposure to the essential oil of fennel for 24 or 48 hours, and whether the fennel plant was vegetative or flowering. The results indicated that earwigs will climb a fennel plant in the absence of aphids and that few statistical significant...

Development and molecular characterizationof a rice mapping populationfor blast resistance. Repositório Alice
ABREU, A. G.; DUITAMA, J.; BORBA, T. C. O.; RODRIGUES, L. A.; COSTA, S. P. P.; MELLO, R. N..
Blast, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, is the most damaging disease in rice. The use of resistance genes in crop breeding programs has been the major, and most sustainable, means for disease control. To identify new resistance genes or alleles to be introduced in breeding lines, a mapping population was developed crossing BRS Esmeralda, an upland cultivar, and Três Marias, a Brazilian landrace internationally recognized as blast resistant.

Expression of rice genes homologous of Arabidopsis genes previously related to drought tolerance. Repositório Alice
ABREU, F. R. M.; DEUS, K. E. de; PEREIRA, W. .J.; SILVEIRA, R. D. D.; VIANELLO, R. P.; BRONDANI, C..
The identification and validation of candidate genes related to traits of interest is a time consuming and expensive process and the homology among genes from different species can facilitate the identification of genes of the target species from the genomic information of a model species. This study aimed to quantify the expression of homologous rice genes previously related to drought tolerance in Arabidopsis. Five genes (CPK6, PLDa, GluR2, CesA8, and EIN2) were identified in rice by the homology of the amino acid sequence between rice and Arabidopsis. The genotypes Douradão (drought tolerant) and Primavera (drought susceptible) were subjected to a water deficit experiment, and subsequently evaluated for gene expression by qPCR for the five homologous...
