Expression of rice genes homologous of Arabidopsis genes previously related to drought tolerance. Repositório Alice
ABREU, F. R. M.; DEUS, K. E. de; PEREIRA, W. .J.; SILVEIRA, R. D. D.; VIANELLO, R. P.; BRONDANI, C..
The identification and validation of candidate genes related to traits of interest is a time consuming and expensive process and the homology among genes from different species can facilitate the identification of genes of the target species from the genomic information of a model species. This study aimed to quantify the expression of homologous rice genes previously related to drought tolerance in Arabidopsis. Five genes (CPK6, PLDa, GluR2, CesA8, and EIN2) were identified in rice by the homology of the amino acid sequence between rice and Arabidopsis. The genotypes Douradão (drought tolerant) and Primavera (drought susceptible) were subjected to a water deficit experiment, and subsequently evaluated for gene expression by qPCR for the five homologous...

Synaptic vesicle cycling is not impaired in a glutamatergic and a cholinergic synapse that exhibit deficits in acidification and filling BJPS
Abreu,Bento João; Leite,Luciana Ferreira; Oliveira,Débora Lopes; Amaral,Ernani.
The purpose of the present work was to investigate synaptic vesicle trafficking when vesicles exhibit alterations in filling and acidification in two different synapses: a cholinergic frog neuromuscular junction and a glutamatergic ribbon-type nerve terminal in the retina. These synapses display remarkable structural and functional differences, and the mechanisms regulating synaptic vesicle cycling might also differ between them. The lipophilic styryl dye FM1-43 was used to monitor vesicle trafficking. Both preparations were exposed to pharmacological agents that collapse ΔpH (NH4Cl and methylamine) or the whole ΔµH+ (bafilomycin), a necessary situation to provide the driving force for neurotransmitter accumulation into synaptic vesicles. The results...

Inheritance of resistance to Phytophthora infestans (Peronosporales, Pythiaceae) in a new source of resistance in tomato (Solanum sp. (formerly Lycopersicon sp.), Solanales, Solanaceae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Abreu,Flávia Barbosa; Silva,Derly José Henriques da; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Mizubuti,Eduardo Seiti Gomide.
In Brazil, no commercial tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. formerly Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) varieties are available which are resistant to the late blight, one of the most important tomato diseases, produced by the phytopathogenic oomycete Phytophthora infestans. The wild tomato (Solanum habrochaites Knapp & Spooner, formerly Lycopersicon hirsutum Dunal) shows resistance to P. infestans, because of which we investigated an interspecific cross between S. lycopersicum cv. Santa Clara and S. habrochaites accession BGH 6902 maintained at the Horticultural Germplasm Bank at the Federal University of Viçosa (Banco de Germoplasma de Horticultura (BGH), Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil) The genitors, F1, F2, BC1 and...

Minimum number and best combinations of harvests to evaluate accessions of tomato plants from germplasm banks Genet. Mol. Biol.
Abreu,Flávia Barbosa; Silva,Derly José Henriques da; Marim,Bruno Garcia; Carneiro,Pedro Crescêncio Souza; Juhasz,Ana Cristina Pinto; De Luca,Carina A.C.; Valente,Reginaldo Fialho; Guimarães,Marcelo Almeida.
This study presents the minimum number and the best combination of tomato harvests needed to compare tomato accessions from germplasm banks. Number and weight of fruit in tomato plants are important as auxiliary traits in the evaluation of germplasm banks and should be studied simultaneously with other desirable characteristics such as pest and disease resistance, improved flavor and early production. Brazilian tomato breeding programs should consider not only the number of fruit but also fruit size because Brazilian consumers value fruit that are homogeneous, large and heavy. Our experiment was a randomized block design with three replicates of 32 tomato accessions from the Vegetable Germplasm Bank (Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças) at the Federal...

Effect of beta 1,3 glucan in stress responses of the pencilfish (Nannostomus trifasciatus) during transport within the rio Negro basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Abreu,Janessa S.; Brinn,Richard P.; Gomes,Levy C.; McComb,Dawn Michelle; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Zaiden,Sérgio F.; Urbinati,Elisabeth C.; Marcon,Jaydione L..
We investigated the use of beta 1,3 glucan as an imunostimulant during a transport experiment to determine the effects upon the stress response of the pencilfish (Nannostomus trifasciatus). Pencilfish were fed for seven days with different concentrations of beta 1,3 glucan: 0.0% (control); 0.01%; 0.1% and 0.5% of beta 1,3 glucan per kg of feed-1. Fish were then transported for 24 hours by boat from Barcelos to Manaus. The highest dose of beta 1,3 glucan in the food increased Na+influx after 12 hours of transport and 0.1 and 0.5% beta 1,3 glucan maintained the flux of both ions close to zero at 24 hours. All doses of beta 1,3 glucan reduced K+ loss significantly in the beginning of the transport, but after 12 to 24 hours...

IDENTIFICATION AND QUANTIFICATION OF DIFFERENTIALLY EXPRESSED GENES ASSOCIATED WITH CITRUS BLIGHT (Citrus spp.) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Abreu,José Renato de; Paiva,Luciano Vilela; Rodríguez,Miguel Angel Dita; Silva,Anderson Tadeu; Henriques,Ariadne Ribeiro; Chalfun-Junior,Antonio.
Brazil is the largest citrus producer in the world, being responsible for more than 20% of its production, which is, however still low due to phytosanitary issues such as citrus blight. Citrus blight is an anomaly whose causes still have not yet been determined, therefore there are no efficient control measures to minimize the production losses with the use of resistant varieties being considered the most appropriate method. However, little is known about the genes involved in the defense response of the plants to this anomaly. Considering that many physiological alterations associated with plant stress responses are controlled at a transcriptional level, in this study we sought the identification and characterization of...

Histological aspects and protein content of Apis mellifera L. Worker venom glands: the effect of electrical shocks in summer and winter J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
ABREU,R.M.M.; MORAES,R.L.M. SILVA de; MALASPINA,O..
This paper analyzes the summer and winter total protein content of 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 40-day old Apis mellifera L. worker venom glands before (control) and 24 and 96 hours after applying electrical shocks for venom extraction (experimental). During venom extraction, 7-day old workers responded more slowly and weakly to electrical shocks. This response intensifies with age, so that the workers approaching 20 days old respond faster and more aggressively to the shocks. Statistical analysis, using the non-parametric Wilcoxon and Kruskall-Wallis tests and complemented by the Jonckheere test, showed that the protein content varied from one age to another in the experimental group, which was well distinguishable from the...

Stem cells and respiratory diseases BABT
Abreu,Soraia Carvalho; Maron-Gutierrez,Tatiana; Garcia,Cristiane Sousa Nascimento Baez; Morales,Marcelo Marcos; Rocco,Patricia Rieken Macedo.
Stem cells have a multitude of clinical implications in the lung. This article is a critical review that includes clinical and experimental studies of MedLine and SciElo database in the last 10 years, where we highlight the effects of stem cell therapy in acute respiratory distress syndrome or more chronic disorders such as lung fibrosis and emphysema. Although, many studies have shown the beneficial effects of stem cells in lung development, repair and remodeling; some important questions need to be answered to better understand the mechanisms that control cell division and differentiation, therefore enabling the use of cell therapy in human respiratory diseases.
