Stem cells and respiratory diseases BABT
Abreu,Soraia Carvalho; Maron-Gutierrez,Tatiana; Garcia,Cristiane Sousa Nascimento Baez; Morales,Marcelo Marcos; Rocco,Patricia Rieken Macedo.
Stem cells have a multitude of clinical implications in the lung. This article is a critical review that includes clinical and experimental studies of MedLine and SciElo database in the last 10 years, where we highlight the effects of stem cell therapy in acute respiratory distress syndrome or more chronic disorders such as lung fibrosis and emphysema. Although, many studies have shown the beneficial effects of stem cells in lung development, repair and remodeling; some important questions need to be answered to better understand the mechanisms that control cell division and differentiation, therefore enabling the use of cell therapy in human respiratory diseases.

ABREU,Virgínia Kelly Gonçalves; PEREIRA,Ana Lúcia Fernandes; FREITAS,Ednardo Rodrigues de; TREVISAN,Maria Teresa Salles; COSTA,José Maria Correia da.
AbstractThe effect of anacardic acid on lipid stability and coloration of chicken mortadella was investigated. Antioxidants were added to chicken mortadellas, according to the treatments: no added antioxidant, 100 ppm butylated hydroxytoluene and 50, 100, 150 and 200 ppm anacardic acid. The mortadellas were stored for 90 days at 4 °C, and the analysis of lipid oxidation and color were performed. For TBARS, there was linear reduction with increased anacardic acid. According to the means test, 200 ppm anacardic acid provided the lower TBARS values. The redness decreased during storage, and, as reported by the means test, mortadella containing 200 ppm anacardic acid had lower values. The lightness of mortadellas decreased during storage. Also in accordance...

Abubakar, Y.U.; Oyedipe, E.O.; Eduvie, L.O.; Ogwu, D.O.; Adeyeye, A.A..
Ten cycling Nigerian West African Dwarf (WAD) ewes were used to determine the effect of Trypanosoma congolense infection on the estrous cycle. The estrus of ewes were synchronized using intravaginal progesterone sponges and divided into 2 groups (A and B) of 5 ewes each after 54 days (3 cycles). The ewes in group A were inoculated with blood containing approximately 5×105 trypanosomes per ml of blood while ewes in group B served as the uninfected control. All the ewes were monitored from infection till the end of the study (56 days). Ewes in the infected group had silent estrus with clinical trypanosomosis that was characterized by undulating parasitemia, intermittent pyrexia, anemia and weight loss. There was no...

Computer simulation of stability and control of tractor-trailed implement combinations under different operating conditions Bragantia
Abu-Hamdeh,Nidal H.; Al-Jalil,Hamid F..
The mechanics of a tractor-trailer system moving up and down sloping ground under different operating conditions was theoretically simulated. A computer program was developed to analyze the system to predict the effect of both the trailer loading weight and the slope angle on the tractor stability, traction ability, and drawbar loading. The program was used to analyze a tractor-trailer system moving at uniform motion up and downhill. The results of this analysis showed that the tractor becomes unstable when towing a 3750 kg trailer uphill at 28° slope angle. Insufficient traction occurred at slope angles ranging from 15° to 18° corresponding to trailer weight of 3750 to 750 kg. The parallel component of drawbar pull reached a maximum value of 17318 N when...

Geomorphology of the Kenyan Coast: Not as a Result of Sea-Level Change Alone OceanDocs
Abuodha, P.A.W..
The coastal setting and the geology control the geomorphology on the Kenyan coast. The evolution of the physical environment has also been influenced by climate, wave and tidal regime, sedimentation and river discharge. The shore terraces of Kenyan coast correspond to eustatic movements of sea level. There seems to be evidence of a high water level during the late Pleistocene. For the lower terraces a Holocene age is suggested. During the Pleistocene, sea level fluctuations associated with glacial / interglacial phases left well developed raised platforms and beaches. The Kenyan coast has a strong tectonic influence and it is difficult to describe the coast in terms of emergence or submergence only. It can therefore be...

Enhanced Accumulation of Scopoletin in Cell Suspension Culture of Spilanthes acmella Murr. Using Precursor Feeding BABT
Abyari,Mohammad; Nasr,Nasrin; Soorni,Jahad; Sadhu,Deokule.
In this study, the various concentrations of casein hydrolysate (25, 50, 75, 100 mg/L) and L-phenylalanine (50, 100, 150, 200 µM/l) were incorporated in MS containing 15 µM BA plus 5 µM 2,4-D for enhancement of secondary metabolites in cell culture of Spilanthes acmella. The presence of casein hydrolysate in the nutrient medium improved the growth of cell biomass and the production of scopoletin. The addition of casein hydrolysate up to 75 mg/L stimulated the accumulation of scopoletin, but increasing excess 75 mg/L the level of casein hydrolysate reduced the production of scopoletin. The addition of L-phenylalanine in the nutrient medium was found to be more effective for production of secondary metabolite in S. acmella. The addition of 50 µM/L of...

FA composition of plasma, red blood cell, and liver phospholipids of newborn piglets fed trans isomers of alpha-linolenic acid Inra
Acar, N.; Chardigny, J.M.; Berdeaux, O.; Almanza, S.; Sébédio, J.L..
The effects of dietary cis and trans alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) on the FA composition of plasma, red blood cell, and liver phospholipids were studied in newborn piglets. Animals were fed for 14 d with one of three diets: a control diet (group A) containing cis 18:3n-3 at a level of 2.0% of total FA, a diet (group B) in which a part of the 18:3n-3 acid was isomerized (1.3% of cis 18:3n-3 and 0.7% of trans 18:3n-3), or a diet (group C) with 2.0% cis 18:3n-3 and 0.7% trans 18:3n-3. Feeding animals with diets containing trans 18:3n-3 resulted in the presence of trans isomers of 18:3n-3, trans isomers of EPA, and trans isomers of DHA in phospholipids; however, the level of total trans n-3 PUFA in tissues was less than 0.3%...

Effect of plant row spacing and herbicide use on weed aboveground biomass and corn grain yield Planta Daninha
Acciares,H.A.; Zuluaga,M.S..
The use of narrow plant spacing in corn (Zea mays) has been suggested as a technological alternative to obtain grain yield increases, due to a better use of resources. The regular pattern could diminish intraspecific competition while favoring interspecific competition with weeds. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of corn row spacing on weed aboveground biomass and corn grain yield. Field experiments were conducted during 2002/2003 and 2003/2004 growing seasons. Three corn hybrids with two-row width (0.70 and 0.35 m) were tested. A greater photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) interception with a lower weed aboveground dry matter in narrow row arrangement was obtained. Corn grain yield was greater in the narrow row arrangement than...

Ecophysiological response of Sorghum halepense populations to reduced rates of nicosulfuron PAB
Acciaresi,Horacio Abel; Chidichimo,Hugo Oscar.
The control and regrowth after nicosulfuron reduced rate treatment of Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense L. Pers.) populations, from seven Argentinean locations, were evaluated in pot experiments to assess if differential performance could limit the design and implementation of integrated weed management programs. Populations from humid regions registered a higher sensibility to reduced rates of nicosulfuron than populations from subhumid regions. This effect was visualised in the values of regression coefficient of the non-linear models (relating fresh weight to nicosulfuron rate), and in the time needed to obtain a 50% reduction of photosynthesis rate and stomatal conductance. The least leaf CO2 exchange of subhumid...

DETECCIÓN EN MUESTRA CLÍNICA E IDENTIFICACIÓN DE AISLADOS DEL VIRUS DE LA BRONQUITIS INFECCIOSA AVIAR POR UN ENSAYO DE REVERSO TRANSCRIPCIÓN ACOPLADO A REACCIÓN EN CADENA DE LA POLIMERASA Rev Salud Anim.
Acevedo,Ana María; Burgher,Yaima; Colás,M; Relova,Damaris; Correa,Arisel; Bacallao,Elsa; Noda,Julia.

DESARROLLO DE CONTROLES POSITIVOS PARA MÉTODOS MOLECULARES DE DETECCIÓN DE VIRUS DE INFLUENZA AVIAR Rev Salud Anim.

The use of reactors in biomining processes Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Acevedo,Fernando.
Microbial processes applied to mining operations are gaining increasing interest in the last years. Potential and current applications include the mining of gold, copper and other heavy metals, desulfurization of coal and oil, tertiary recovery of oil and biosorption of metal ions. Currently, bacterial leaching of copper and biooxidation of refractory gold concentrates are well-established large-scale processes that are carried on using heaps and tank reactors. Heap operation is simple and adequate to handle large volumes of minerals, but their productivity and yields are limited because of the severe difficulties in exerting an adequate process control. On the other hand, reactors can economically handle moderate volumes...
