Genetic variability and efficiency of DNA microsatellite markers for paternity testing in horse breeds from the Brazilian Marajó archipelago Genet. Mol. Biol.
Reis,Sávio P.; Gonçalves,Evonnildo C.; Silva,Artur; Schneider,Maria P.C..
In this study, 15 microsatellite DNA loci used in comparative tests by the International Society for Animal Genetics were applied to the evaluation of genetic diversity and management, and the efficiency of paternity testing in Marajoara horses and Puruca ponies from the Marajó Archipelago. Based on the genotyping of 93 animals, mean allelic diversity was estimated as 9.14 and 7.00 for the Marajoara and Puruca breeds, respectively. While these values are similar to those recorded in most European breeds, mean levels of heterozygosity were much lower (Marajoara 49%, Puruca 40%), probably as a result of high levels of inbreeding in the Marajó populations. The mean informative polymorphic content of this 15-marker system was over 50% in both breeds, and was...

Factores que facilitan y retrasan la invasión de coníferas exóticas en la Isla Victoria Ecología austral
Relva,María A.; Nuñez,Martín A..

The Arabidopsis NRT1.1 transporter participates in the signaling pathway triggering root colonization of nitrate-rich patches Inra
Remans, T.; Nacry, P.; Pervent, M.; Filleur, S.; Diatloff, E.; Mounier, E.; Tillard, P.; Forde, B.G.; Gojon, A..
Localized proliferation of lateral roots in NO3--rich patches is a striking example of the nutrient-induced plasticity of root development. In Arabidopsis, NO3- stimulation of lateral root elongation is apparently under the control of a NO3--signaling pathway involving the ANR1 transcription factor. ANR1 is thought to transduce the NO3- signal internally, but the upstream NO3- sensing system is unknown. Here, we show that mutants of the NRT1.1 nitrate transporter display a strongly decreased root colonization of NO3--rich patches, resulting from reduced lateral root elongation. This phenotype is not due to lower specific NO3- uptake activity in the mutants and is not suppressed when the NO3--rich patch is supplemented with...

pH-Dependent behaviour of soluble protein aggregates formed during heat-treatment of milk at pH 6.5 or 7.2 Inra
Renan, M.; Mekmene, O.; Famelart, M.H.; Guyomarc'h, F.; Arnoult-Delest, V.; Pâquet, D.; Brulé, G..
The pH-dependent behaviour of soluble protein aggregates produced by the pre-heating of reconstituted skim milk at 90 °C for 10 min was studied, in order to understand the role of these aggregates in acid gelation of heated milk. The following milk samples were prepared: (1) control (unheated reconstituted milk, pH 6·5); (2) milk heat-treated at pH 6·5 (mHtd6·5) and (3) milk heat-treated at pH 7·2 (mHtd7·2). They were centrifuged and the supernatants (SPNT 1) pH-adjusted to yield a series of pH values ranging from 6·5 or 7·2 to 4·6 using HCl at 20 °C or GDL at 20 and 38 °C. pH-Adjusted SPNTs 1 were re-centrifuged. The resulting supernatants (SPNTs 2) were analysed by OD (at 600 and 280 nm) and SDS-PAGE in order to...

Disentangling the Mesoscale Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions ArchiMer
Renault, L.; Masson, S.; Oerder, V.; Jullien, Swen; Colas, François.
In the past decades, the use of scatterometer data allowed to demonstrate the global ubiquity of the Ocean Mesoscale Thermal FeedBack (TFB) and Current FeedBack (CFB) effects on surface winds and stress. Understanding these air‐sea interactions is of uttermost importance as the induced atmospheric anomalies partly control the ocean circulation, and, thus, can influence the Earth Climate. Whether the TFB and CFB effects can be disentangled, and whether satellite scatterometers can properly reveal them, remain rather unclear. Here, using satellite observations and ocean‐atmosphere coupled mesoscale simulations over 45° S‐45° N, we show that the CFB effect can be properly characterized and unraveled from that due to the TFB....

Control and Stabilization of the Gulf Stream by Oceanic Current Interaction with the Atmosphere ArchiMer
Renault, Lionel; Molemaker, Maarten Jeroen; Gula, Jonathan; Masson, Sebastien; Mcwilliams, James C..
The Gulf Stream (GS) is known to have a strong influence on climate, for example, by transporting heat from the tropics to higher latitudes. Although the GS transport intensity presents a clear interannual variability, satellite observations reveal its mean path is stable. Numerical models can simulate some characteristics of the mean GS path, but persistent biases keep the GS separation and postseparation unstable and therefore unrealistic. This study investigates how the integration of ocean surface currents into the ocean–atmosphere coupling interface of numerical models impacts the GS. The authors show for the first time that the current feedback, through its eddy killing effect, stabilizes the GS separation and postseparation, resolving long-lasting...

Tenter de maîtriser les maladies infectieuses chez les mollusques : une clé pour une aquaculture durable ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan.
The world halieutic production reached 133 million tons in 2002. The part of aquaculture in the world halieutic production grew from 25.8% to 29.9% between 1998 and 2002. Over the same period, if the fishing production increased by 6.3%, the aquacultural production progressed by 30%. According to the FAO, the world fish, mollusc and crustacea consumption could be around 179 million tons by 2015. Most of this new demand will have to be satisfied by aquaculture. By 2015, aquaculture could represent 39% of the world halieutic production. Infectious diseases may influence the survival, but also the growth and zootechnical performances of cultivated animals. As a matter of fact, they are hazards that have to be taken into account and mastered. Aquaculture, as...

Appearance and spread of diseases among bivalve molluscs in the northern hemisphere in relation to international trade ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan.
Bivalve mollusc culture is a well-developed marine aquaculture activity in many countries around the world, notably in the northern hemisphere. During the development of this activity, numerous countries have been confronted with infectious diseases of varying severity and duration. Research has been conducted to determine the aetiology, epidemiology and control measures for these epizootics. Major epizootics in bivalve molluscs have been caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoan parasites. Moreover, important commercial relations exist in marine mollusc culture between different geographical areas. This must be taken into account in explaining the appearance and the spread of some infectious diseases in several...

Antiviral immunity in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas: last development and perspective ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Faury, Nicole; Barbosa, Valerie; Moreau, Kevin; Haffner, Philippe; Pepin, Jean-francois.
Herpes-like viruses have been reported last decades in various marine mollusc species in association with mortality outbreaks throughout the world (Renault & Novoa 2004). One of these viruses isolated during French outbreaks has been characterised as an unassigned member of the Herpesviridae family and named ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV-1) or Pacific oyster herpes virus (Davison et al. 2005). Studying anti-viral non-specific defence mechanisms (innate immunity) is of great interest, because they constitute the only one in molluscs. Therefore, innate immunity has be investigated in the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The main aim of the work was focused on the identification and the characterisation of genes induced by OsHV-1 in the Pacific...

Differential Effect of the Route of Inoculation of Rabies Virus on NeuN Immunoreactivity in the Cerebral Cortex of Mice International Journal of Morphology
Rengifo,Aura Caterine; Umbarila,Vanessa Jazmin; Garzón,Mary Janeth; Torres-Fernández,Orlando.
Rabies is a lethal disease caused by a neurotropic virus that produces inconspicuous morphological changes hardly observable with conventional histopathology. The fatal outcome caused by rabies could be attributed to specific biochemical changes that severely impact neuronal function. The neuronal nuclear protein (NeuN) has become a widely used neuronal marker for the research and the histopathological diagnosis of nervous system diseases. To evaluate the distribution of the protein NeuN in the motor cortex of normal and rabies-infected mice adult ICR mice were inoculated with rabies virus either intramuscularly or intracerebrally. Rabies-infected mice were sacrificed at the terminal stage of the disease. Control mice were...

Synovial fluid as an auxiliary diagnostic tool for different stages of canine visceral leishmaniasis Ciência Rural
Rennó,Mário César; Vasconcellos,Amanda Otoni; Santos,Rogerio Rodrigues; Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Carneiro,Rubens Antônio; Paes,Paulo Ricardo de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Leishmaniasis represents a complex of chronic diseases with a broad geographic distribution and a high significance in public health worldwide. The varied clinical signs in conjunction with the low sensitivity and specificity of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) detection methods make diagnosis of the disease complex. Among the several available laboratory tests, studies have suggested that the detection of parasites in synovial fluid (SF) is a good auxiliary tool in the diagnosis of CVL. However, no study has evaluated the influence of the clinical stage of CVL in the detection of Leishmania sp. in SF. This study aimed to evaluate the detection of Leishmania sp. amastigotes in the SF of dogs at different stages of the disease. The negative...

QTLs for seedling traits under salinity stress in hexaploid wheat Ciência Rural
Ren,Yongzhe; Xu,Yanhua; Teng,Wan; Li,Bin; Lin,Tongbao.
ABSTRACT: Soil salinity limits agricultural production and is a major obstacle for increasing crop yield. Common wheat is one of the most important crops with allohexaploid characteristic and a highly complex genome. QTL mapping is a useful way to identify genes for quantitative traits such as salinity tolerance in hexaploid wheat. In the present study, a hydroponic trial was carried out to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with salinity tolerance of wheat under 150mM NaCl concentration using a recombinant inbred line population (Xiaoyan 54×Jing 411). Values of wheat seedling traits including maximum root length (MRL), root dry weight (RDW), shoot dry weight (SDW), total dry weight (TDW) and the ratio of TDW of wheat plants between salt...
