100% Organic Feed for Poultry – Results of Feed Trials in the UK Organic Eprints
Gerrard, Catherine L.; Smith, Jo; Nelder, Rebecca; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce; Bright, Ashleigh.
Current regulations for organic monogastric production systems permit feed ingredients of non-organic origin, primarily due to concerns about meeting the demand for the essential amino acids methionine and lysine. However, 100 % organic diets will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015, so there is a need to develop feeds which will supply the required level of nutrients and support high animal health and welfare. This paper reports on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK to investigate the impact of three 100 % organic diets: a control diet with globally sourced ingredients, a diet based on locally sourced (i.e. within Europe) organic ingredients, and a diet based on locally sourced organic...

Tian-miao Ou; Yu-jing Lu; Xiao-dong Wang; Zeng-yun An; Yan-ping Li; Zhi-shu Huang; Lian-quan Gu.
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a pluripotent cytokine and angiogenic growth factor, plays crucial roles in embryonic development and tumour progression, and is over-expressed in many types of cancer and generally associated with tumour progression and survival rate. The polypurine/polypyrimide sequence located upstream (-89 to -43) of the promoter region of the human VEGF gene that can form specific G-quadruplex structures and raise the possibility for transcriptional control of the VEGF gene by G-quadruplex ligands. In the present study, we investigated the interaction between the 5-N-methyl-7-fluorine-quindoline derivatives (11-amino-5-N-methyl-7-fluorine- quindoline derivatives) and the G-rich sequence in...

2007 Supermarket Panel Report AgEcon
Chung, Wonho; Kinsey, Jean D.; Seltzer, Jonathan M.; Yeap, Clarissa A..
The Food Industry Center established the Supermarket Panel in 1998 as the basis for an ongoing study of the supermarket industry. Since 2000, the core of the Panel has been a random sample of stores drawn from the approximately 32,000 supermarkets in the U.S. that accept food stamps. The purpose of collecting data on supermarket operations and performance is to: • Provide timely, useful information for the industry through benchmark reports and annual summaries, trends on key indices of technology adoption, competitive positions and performance. • Be a ready source of data for research on current and emerging issues – to be able to track the changes in operation and its impacts on performance over time. This report provides a detailed summary of results...

24-Epibrassinolide mechanisms regulating blossom-end rot development in tomato fruit. Repositório Alice
RIBOLDI, L. B.; GAZIOLA, S. A.; AZEVEDO, R. A.; FREITAS, S. T. de; CASTRO, P. R. de C. e.
Blossom-end rot (BER) is a physiological disorder believed to be triggered by low Ca2+ content in the distal fruit tissue. However, many other factors can also determine fruit susceptibility to BER. It is possible that during fruit growth, Ca2+ imbalance can increase membrane leakiness, which may trigger the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, leading to cell death. Brassinosteroids are a class of plant hormones involved in stress defenses, specially increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the accumulation of antioxidant compounds, such as ascorbic acid. The objective of this study was to understand the mechanisms by which 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) reduces fruit susceptibility to BER. Tomato plants ?BRS Montese? were cultivated in a...

2-Styrylchromones as novel inhibitors of xanthine oxidase. A structure-activity study IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Fernandes, Eduarda; Carvalho, Félix; Silva, Artur; Santos, Clementina M.M.; Pinto, Diana; Cavaleiro, José; Bastos, Maria de Lourdes.
The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition produced by some synthetic 2-styrylchromones. Ten polyhydroxylated derivatives with several substitution patterns were synthesised, and these and a positive control, allopurinol, were tested for their effects on XO activity by measuring the formation of uric acid from xanthine. The synthesised 2-styrylchromones inhibited xanthine oxidase in a concentration-dependent and non-competitive manner. Some IC50 values found were as low as 0.55mM, which, by comparison with the IC50 found for allopurinol (5.43 mM), indicates promising new inhibitors. Those 2-styrylchromones found to be potent XO inhibitors should be further evaluated as potential...

3-D active source tomography around Simeulue Island offshore Sumatra: Thick crustal zone responsible for earthquake segment boundary ArchiMer
Tang, Genyang; Barton, Penny J.; Mcneill, Lisa C.; Henstock, Timothy J.; Tilmann, Frederik; Dean, Simon M.; Jusuf, Muhammad D.; Djajadihardja, Yusuf S.; Permana, Haryadi; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Kopp, Heidrun.
We present a detailed 3-D P-wave velocity model obtained by first-arrival travel-time tomography with seismic refraction data in the segment boundary of the Sumatra subduction zone across Simeulue Island, and an image of the top of the subducted oceanic crust extracted from depth-migrated multi-channel seismic reflection profiles. We have picked P-wave first arrivals of the air-gun source seismic data recorded by local networks of ocean-bottom seismometers, and inverted the travel-times for a 3-D velocity model of the subduction zone. This velocity model shows an anomalous zone of intermediate velocities between those of oceanic crust and mantle that is associated with raised topography on the top of the oceanic crust. We interpret this feature as a...

A 1991 social accounting matrix (SAM) for Zimbabwe AgEcon
Thomas, Marcelle; Bautista, Romeo M..
The 1991 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for Zimbabwe that we document in this paper is intended to provide benchmark data for economy-wide analysis under the MERRISA Project. Its construction is based on a three-step process: (1) building a macro SAM that presents the aggregative features of the Zimbabwean economy and serves as a control matrix for the micro SAM; (2) disaggregation into a complete but unbalanced micro SAM; and (3) balancing the disaggregated and complete micro SAM using the cross-entropy approach. The macro SAM entries are based on aggregates from a recent, significant revision of the Zimbabwe national accounts for 1991. The structure of the micro SAM is a disaggregated version of the macro SAM. The...

A 1995 social accounting matrix for Zambia AgEcon
Hausner, Ulrich.
This paper documents the construction of the 1995 Social Accounting Matrix for Zambia (ZAMSAM). The SAM incorporates economy-wide data in a consistent framework and provides the benchmark data for the analysis under the MERRISA project. Data sources include national accounts data, government budgets, balance of payments statistics, trade data, household surveys, and farm budgets. The SAM construction can be divided into three steps: First, a highly aggregated SAM (macro SAM) is constructed. It represents the macroeconomic framework of the Zambian economy. Second, the macro SAM is disaggregated into a micro SAM with the macro SAM entries serving as control totals for various sub-matrices of the micro SAM. Due to data...

A 4WD Omnidirectional Mobile Platform and its Application to Wheelchairs InTech
Masayoshi Wada.
Conventional electric wheelchairs can not meet requirements for both maneuverability and high mobility in rough terrain in a single design. Enhancing their mobility could facilitate the use of wheelchairs and other electric mobile machines and promote barrier-free environments without re-constructing existing facilities. To improve wheelchair step-climbing and maneuverability, we introduced a 4WD with a pair of normal wheels in back and a pair of omniwheels in front. A normal wheel and an omniwheel are connected by a transmission and driven by a common motor to make them rotate in unison. To apply the 4WD to a wheelchair platform, we conducted basic analyses on the ability to climb steps. After analyzing the original 4WD statics and kinematics and...

A 5.3‐million‐year history of monsoonal precipitation in northwestern Australia ArchiMer
Stuut, Jan‐berend W.; De Deckker, Patrick; Saavedra‐pellitero, Mariem; Bassinot, Franck; Drury, Anna‐joy; Walczak, Maureen H.; Nagashima, Kana; Murayama, Masafumi.
New proxy records from deep‐sea sediment cores from the northwestern continental margin of Western Australian reveal a 5.3 million‐year (Ma) history of aridity and tropical‐monsoon activity in northwestern Australia. Following the warm and dry early Pliocene (~5.3 Ma), the northwestern Australian continent experienced a gradual increase in humidity peaking at about 3.8 Ma with higher than present‐day rainfall. Between 3.8 and about 2.8 Ma, climate became progressively more arid with more rainfall variability. Coinciding with the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciations and the intensification of the northern hemisphere monsoon, aridity continued to increase overall from 2.8 Ma until today, with greater variance in precipitation and an increased...

A ABERTURA COMERCIAL E O SETOR LÁCTEO BRASILEIRO: ALGUMAS REFLEXÕES AgEcon
Cruz, Jose Claudio Freitas; Crispim, Joao Paulo Carvalho.
