100% Organic Feed for Poultry – Results of Feed Trials in the UK Organic Eprints
Gerrard, Catherine L.; Smith, Jo; Nelder, Rebecca; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce; Bright, Ashleigh.
Current regulations for organic monogastric production systems permit feed ingredients of non-organic origin, primarily due to concerns about meeting the demand for the essential amino acids methionine and lysine. However, 100 % organic diets will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015, so there is a need to develop feeds which will supply the required level of nutrients and support high animal health and welfare. This paper reports on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK to investigate the impact of three 100 % organic diets: a control diet with globally sourced ingredients, a diet based on locally sourced (i.e. within Europe) organic ingredients, and a diet based on locally sourced organic...

Moretti,Celso Luiz; Araújo,Alessandra L.; Marouelli,Waldir Aparecido; Silva,Washington Luiz C..
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits, cv. Santa Clara, were harvested at the breaker stage from commercial fields in Brazlândia, Brazil, to investigate the ability of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to retard tomato fruit ripening. Fruit without external blemishes were graded for size (diameter = 80±5 mm) and mass (m = 130±10 g), placed inside hermetically sealed boxes, and 1-MCP was applied for 12 hours (T = 22±1°C; RH = 80-85%) at four different concentrations: 0 (control), 250, 500 and 1000 mL.L-1. Fruits were held at ambient conditions (T = 23±2°C; RH 80-85%) for 2 days and then stored inside a cold room (T = 20±1°C; RH = 85-95%). Every 3 days, during a 15-day period, fruits were analyzed for firmness, total...

2,3,8-Trisubstituted Quinolines with Antimalarial Activity Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARTINEZ,PABLO D.G.; KRAKE,SUSANN H.; POGGI,MAITIA L.; CAMPBELL,SIMON F.; WILLIS,PAUL A.; DIAS,LUIZ C..
ABSTRACT Combination therapy drugs are considered a fundamental way to control malaria as it mimimizes the risk of emergence of resistance to the individual partner drugs. Consequently, this type of therapy constitutes a driving force for the discovery of new drugs with different modes of action, since this will provide options for combining different drugs to achieve the optimum antimalarial treatment. In this context, a 2,3,8-trisubstitued quinoline compound was found in a high throughput screen (HTS) to show an excellent inhibition of P. falciparum NF54 (IC50 = 22 nM) and low cytotoxicity. We performed a detailed evaluation of the substituents to improve the metabolic stability and solubility liabilities of the original...

24-Epibrassinolide mechanisms regulating blossom-end rot development in tomato fruit. Repositório Alice
RIBOLDI, L. B.; GAZIOLA, S. A.; AZEVEDO, R. A.; FREITAS, S. T. de; CASTRO, P. R. de C. e.
Blossom-end rot (BER) is a physiological disorder believed to be triggered by low Ca2+ content in the distal fruit tissue. However, many other factors can also determine fruit susceptibility to BER. It is possible that during fruit growth, Ca2+ imbalance can increase membrane leakiness, which may trigger the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, leading to cell death. Brassinosteroids are a class of plant hormones involved in stress defenses, specially increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the accumulation of antioxidant compounds, such as ascorbic acid. The objective of this study was to understand the mechanisms by which 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) reduces fruit susceptibility to BER. Tomato plants ?BRS Montese? were cultivated in a...

2(5H)-Furanone: a prospective strategy for biofouling-control in membrane biofilm bacteria by quorum sensing inhibition BJM
Ponnusamy,Kannan; Paul,Diby; Kim,Young Sam; Kweon,Ji Hyang.
Biofouling of membranes demands costly periodic cleaning and membrane replacement. A sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for maintenance is not available and would be of great interest for many purposes including economical. As complex biofilm formation by environmental strains is the major cause of biofouling and biofilm formation in most cases are controlled by N-Acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)mediated Quorum Sensing (QS). An effort was made to understand the appropriateness of 2(5H)-furanone, to use against biofouling of membranes. QS inhibition activity by 2(5H)-furanone was studied using bioindicator strains and known AHLs of different acyl chain lengths. The biofilm inhibition was studied by growth analysis on polystyrene plate of...

2-Styrylchromones as novel inhibitors of xanthine oxidase. A structure-activity study IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Fernandes, Eduarda; Carvalho, Félix; Silva, Artur; Santos, Clementina M.M.; Pinto, Diana; Cavaleiro, José; Bastos, Maria de Lourdes.
The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition produced by some synthetic 2-styrylchromones. Ten polyhydroxylated derivatives with several substitution patterns were synthesised, and these and a positive control, allopurinol, were tested for their effects on XO activity by measuring the formation of uric acid from xanthine. The synthesised 2-styrylchromones inhibited xanthine oxidase in a concentration-dependent and non-competitive manner. Some IC50 values found were as low as 0.55mM, which, by comparison with the IC50 found for allopurinol (5.43 mM), indicates promising new inhibitors. Those 2-styrylchromones found to be potent XO inhibitors should be further evaluated as potential...

We present a detailed 3-D P-wave velocity model obtained by first-arrival travel-time tomography with seismic refraction data in the segment boundary of the Sumatra subduction zone across Simeulue Island, and an image of the top of the subducted oceanic crust extracted from depth-migrated multi-channel seismic reflection profiles. We have picked P-wave first arrivals of the air-gun source seismic data recorded by local networks of ocean-bottom seismometers, and inverted the travel-times for a 3-D velocity model of the subduction zone. This velocity model shows an anomalous zone of intermediate velocities between those of oceanic crust and mantle that is associated with raised topography on the top of the oceanic crust. We interpret this feature as a...

6 weeks consumption of pure fresh coconut milk caused up-regulation of eNOS and CSE protein expression in middle-aged male rats BJPS
Jansakul,Chaweewan; Naphatthalung,Jomkarn; Pradab,Sakda; Yorsin,Somruedee; Kanokwiroon,Kanyanatt.
Coconut milk (CCM) has been an important cooking ingredient in the Asia-Pacific region since ancient time. Due to its high content of saturated fatty acids, it has been considered atherogenic. We have tested if chronic consumption of fresh coconut milk by middle-aged male rat affects vascular function, plasma glucose and lipid profiles. Compared to control, CCM caused lower maximal contraction to phenylephrine of thoracic aortic rings and increased relaxation to acetylcholine that was abolished by N G-nitro-L-arginine (L-NA) or disruption of the endothelium. DL-propargylglycine caused slight increase in baseline tension of L-NA treated aortic rings of CCM-treated rats and produced higher contractile response of the aortic...

-866G/A and Ins/Del polymorphisms in the UCP2 gene and diabetic kidney disease: case-control study and meta-analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Dieter,Cristine; Assmann,Taís Silveira; Lemos,Natália Emerim; Massignam,Eloísa Toscan; Souza,Bianca Marmontel de; Bauer,Andrea Carla; Crispim,Daisy.
Abstract Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) decreases reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS overproduction is a key contributor to the pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Thus, UCP2 polymorphisms are candidate risk factors for DKD; however, their associations with this complication are still inconclusive. Here, we describe a case-control study and a meta-analysis conducted to investigate the association between UCP2 -866G/A and Ins/Del polymorphisms and DKD. The case-control study comprised 385 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM): 223 patients without DKD and 162 with DKD. UCP2 -866G/A (rs659366) and Ins/Del polymorphisms were genotyped by real-time PCR and conventional PCR,...

A 1991 social accounting matrix (SAM) for Zimbabwe AgEcon
Thomas, Marcelle; Bautista, Romeo M..
The 1991 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for Zimbabwe that we document in this paper is intended to provide benchmark data for economy-wide analysis under the MERRISA Project. Its construction is based on a three-step process: (1) building a macro SAM that presents the aggregative features of the Zimbabwean economy and serves as a control matrix for the micro SAM; (2) disaggregation into a complete but unbalanced micro SAM; and (3) balancing the disaggregated and complete micro SAM using the cross-entropy approach. The macro SAM entries are based on aggregates from a recent, significant revision of the Zimbabwe national accounts for 1991. The structure of the micro SAM is a disaggregated version of the macro SAM. The...

A 1995 social accounting matrix for Zambia AgEcon
Hausner, Ulrich.
This paper documents the construction of the 1995 Social Accounting Matrix for Zambia (ZAMSAM). The SAM incorporates economy-wide data in a consistent framework and provides the benchmark data for the analysis under the MERRISA project. Data sources include national accounts data, government budgets, balance of payments statistics, trade data, household surveys, and farm budgets. The SAM construction can be divided into three steps: First, a highly aggregated SAM (macro SAM) is constructed. It represents the macroeconomic framework of the Zambian economy. Second, the macro SAM is disaggregated into a micro SAM with the macro SAM entries serving as control totals for various sub-matrices of the micro SAM. Due to data...
