A co-viability model of grazing and bird community management in farmland Inra
Tichit, M.; Doyen, L.; Lemel, J.Y.; Renault, O.; Durant, D..
In European grasslands, livestock grazing is a key driver of habitat quality. However, the specific grazing regimes that favour habitat quality and ensure biodiversity conservation remain largely unknown. This paper develops a dynamic model to predict how livestock grazing may be used to sustain a bird community without penalizing cattle feeding. The model focuses on a grassland grazed by cattle which is also the breeding habitat of three wader species. It integrates the dynamics of a sward, controlled through grazing, and that of three bird populations. Viability theory and dynamic programming are used to reveal viable grazing strategies that ensure the creation of two levels of habitat quality (homogeneous and heterogeneous) whilst ensuring cattle...

A Critique of the Use of the Balanced Scorecard in Multi-Enterprise Family Farm Businesses AgEcon
Shadbolt, Nicola M.; Beeby, N.; Brier, B.; Gardner, John W.G..
Business strategy is very important to small and medium family businesses as many are both fragile and vulnerable; strategy provides a solid foundation for survival. Various studies have identified that businesses that engage in strategic management outperform those that do not. Despite this knowledge the uptake of many aspects of strategic management by farm businesses has been slow. Although the development of business plans is now common there is often a disconnect between monitoring and strategy. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) was applied to case study farms during both the planning process and as they implemented and controlled their strategic choices to determine areas of difference that restrict or enhance it as a management tool for both family and...

A cytochemical study of acid carbohydrates on the surface of Candida lipolytica grown in tween 80-containing medium BJM
Nascimento,Aline E.; Shariá,Allana E. do Nascimento; Lima,Marco Antonio Barbosa de; Campos-Takaki,Galba Maria.
Carbohydrate-containing molecules were located on the surface of Candida lipolytica by using ruthenium red in a cytochemical study. The yeast was grown in media containing Tween 80. The surfactant, at 1.0% and 0.5%, was added to the culture medium in different intervals of time, correspondent to the beginning of exponential growth phase, mid of logarithimic phase and beginning of stationary growth phase. Control cultures were grown in a medium containing glucose. The growth of the yeast in media containing glucose and Tween 80 induced changes in the pattern of distribution and location of acid polyssacharides in the cell wall of the microorganism. In adition, the pattern also changed according to Tween 80 concentration....

A decision network for inspections in organic farms in Italy Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Zanoli, Raffaele; Solfanelli, Francesco.
Inspections in organic farming systems are the key tool to assure reliability of the organic business and detection of non-compliant operators. Supporting control bodies in the inspection procedure can increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the sector. Here we propose a decision support system for inspections based on Bayesian networks. Our model is based on statistical information taken from the archives of main Italian control body, and considers decision strategies according to the maximization of expected utility based on risk minimization. © 2012 The authors and IOS Press.

A decision support system for soil and water conservation measures on agricultural watersheds Eprints@IARI
Sarangi, A; Madramootoo, C A; Cox, C A.
Integrated watershed management (IWM) is vital in achieving agricultural sustainability in terms of both production and environmental protection. A decision support system (DSS) is useful in generating alternative decision scenarios for management of natural resources, facilitating the implementation of IWM concepts in an interactive and holistic way. The decision to implement an appropriate land use coupled with suitable soil and water conservation techniques not only enhances watershed health but also prevents sediment losses. Besides reducing basin fertility, such losses decrease the storage capacity of downstream reservoirs through silt deposition, which can, in turn, give rise to low biomass production and poorer flood

A Designing of Humanoid Robot Hands in Endo Skeleton and Exoskeleton Styles InTech
Ichiro Kawabuchi.
To contribute on the evaluative process of searching the appropriate designing paradigms as a mechanical engineer, I bring up in this paper some of my ideas about the robot hand design concretely. While the designs of my robot hands may seem to be filled with eccentric, vagarious and serendipitous ideas for some people, I believe they are practical outcomes of flexible ingenuity in mechanical designing, so that they can take on pre-programmed but robust actuating roles for helping the programmable but limited actuators, and realize higher total balance in mechatronics. At the same time, for examining their practicability, reasonability and inevitability through the eyes of many persons, it will need to establish a standard definition and evaluation items...

A Developing Country Puts A Halt To Foreign Overfishing OceanDocs
Nichols, P..
Foreign fishing fleets drastically overfished the waters off Namibia before that country gained independence in 1990, according to Paul Nichols, Special Adviser to the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. Since then, the Government has taken strong regulatory actions that have brought overfishing under control and allowed depleted fish stocks to rebuild while gaining strong support for the policy among Namibia's commercial fishers.

Urban water governance regimes around the world have traditionally planned large-scale, centralized infrastructure systems that aim to control variables and reduce uncertainties. There is growing sectoral awareness that a transition toward sustainable alternatives is necessary if systems are to meet society’s future water needs in the context of drivers such as climate change and variability, demographic changes, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity. However, there is minimal understanding of how the urban water sector should operationalize its strategic planning for such change to facilitate the transition to a sustainable water future. We have integrated concepts from transitions, resilience, and...

A DNA enzyme targeting Egr-1 inhibits rat vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation by down-regulation of cyclin D1 and TGF-β1 BJMBR
Wu,Y.; Han,W.; Liu,G.-N..
We have demonstrated that a synthetic DNA enzyme targeting early growth response factor-1 (Egr-1) can inhibit neointimal hyperplasia following vascular injury. However, the detailed mechanism of this inhibition is not known. Thus, the objective of the present study was to further investigate potential inhibitory mechanisms. Catalytic DNA (ED5) and scrambled control DNA enzyme (ED5SCR) were synthesized and transfected into primary cultures of rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). VSMC proliferation and DNA synthesis were analyzed by the MTT method and BrdU staining, respectively. Egr-1, TGF-β1, p53, p21, Bax, and cyclin D1 expression was detected by RT-PCR and Western blot. Apoptosis and cell cycle assays were performed...

A DNA pooling based system to detect Escherichia coli virulence factors in fecal and wastewater samples BJM
Luz María Chacón,J; Lizeth Taylor,C; Carmen Valiente,A; Irene Alvarado,P; Ximena Cortés,B.
The availability of a useful tool for simple and timely detection of the most important virulent varieties of Escherichia coli is indispensable. To this end, bacterial DNA pools which had previously been categorized were obtained from isolated colonies as well as selected in terms of utilized phenotype; the pools were assessed by two PCR Multiplex for the detection of virulent E. coli eaeA, bfpA, stx1, stx2, ipaH, ST, LT, and aatA genes, with the 16S gene used as DNA control. The system was validated with 66 fecal samples and 44 wastewater samples. At least one positive isolate was detected by a virulent gene among the 20 that were screened. The analysis of fecal samples from children younger than 6 years of age detected...

A Drosophila systems model of withdrawal from chronic pentylenetetrazole relevant in post-epileptogenesis Nature Precedings
Priyanka Singh; Farhan Mohammad; Abhay Sharma.
Rodent kindling induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) is an established model of epileptogenesis and antiepileptic drug (AED) testing. Recently, a Drosophila systems model has been described in which chronic PTZ causes a decreased climbing speed in adult males on 7th day. Some AEDs ameliorate development of this locomotor deficit. Time-series of microarray expression profiles of heads of flies treated with PTZ has been found to resemble transcriptomic alterations associated with epileptogenesis. In the fly model, withdrawal from seven day long PTZ treatment causes an increased climbing speed on 7th consequent day. Here, we present a systems model of the post-PTZ withdrawal regime. Unlike AED-untreated individuals, flies treated with any of the five AEDs...
