Increase in the blood supply to individual follicles appears to be associated with follicular growth rates and the ability to become the dominant follicle, while reduced thecal vascularity appears to be closely associated with follicular atresia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the real-time changes in the vascularity of the follicle wall during the first follicular wave in cycling Holstein cows. Normally cycling and lactating cows (n=5) were examined by transrectal color Doppler ultrasonography (the sensitivity for velocity: > 2 mm/sec) to determine the changes in the vasculature of the follicle wall (presence or absence of blood flow) and the diameter of follicles. A new follicular wave and ovulation were...

The aim of the present in vivo study was to monitor real-time fluctuations of cortisol (Cr) in the wall of preovulatory follicles using a microdialysis system (MDS) implanted in the theca layer as well as changes in ovarian venous plasma (OVP) and jugular venous plasma (JVP). Seven cows were superovulated using FSH and prostaglandin F2α injections. Dialysis capillary membranes were surgically implanted into the theca layer of mature follicles and connected to a microdialysis system. Fractions of the perfusates were collected from Day -1 (Day 0=LH surge) to Day 3. No difference in the concentrations of Cr between JVP and OVP was detected throughout the experiment. Circulating concentrations of Cr ranged from 20 to 35 ng/ml 8 h after surgery in ovulatory and...

It was analyzed in this work the influence of photoperiod on time interval from ovulation induction period to extrusion of ovocits in female bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus). It was used 54 females reared from metamorphosis to 9 months of age under three photoperiods: dark time (DL 0:24), 16 hours of daylight (DL 16:8) and 12 hours of daylight (DL 12:12). Ovulation was induced by intramuscular application of two doses of LHRHa with 12 hours of interval between the injections. After 10, 25, 28, 31, 34 and 37 hours from the first hormone injection, 10-gram samples (3,000 eggs) were extracted from each female at each time interval and fertilized. Egg hatching rate was checked in each...

Fertility of dairy cattle is generally decreasing. Overall estrus detection efficiency in lactating dairy cattle is low, as expression of estrus is often compromised. Consequently, undetected estrus, low AI-submission rates, and long inter-breeding intervals are the main contributors to poor reproductive efficiency. Although failure to become pregnant is the most common reason for culling dairy cattle, pregnancy rates could be improved by increasing the AI-submission rate through increased estrus detection efficiency, timed insemination (Timed-AI), or timed embryo transfer (Timed-ET). In these protocols, ovarian follicular development and luteolysis are controlled, culminating in synchronous ovulation in most cows. There...

Effects of super-ovulation on 40 rabbit does were evaluated. Females were distributed in a completely randomized design, with four treatments (oil-free ration and rations with 3% canola oil, corn oil or soybean oil) and 10 replications. Each doe received a unique intramuscular dose of 40 UI of equine corionic gonadotrophin (eCG); 48 hours later they underwent breeding. After 72 hours of breeding, the does were slaughtered and 10mL blood samples were collected for progesterone and 17β-estradiol serum level analyses. Other parameters, such as weight of uterus with ovaries, number of follicles and of corpora lutea, were obtained. Embryos were recovered by three flushings, per uterine corn, with Dulbecco extender (PBS). The...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of half dose of PGF2alpha in the synchronization of ovulation protocol (GnRH/PGF2alpha/GnRH) for fixed-time artificial insemination in buffalo. Two hundred and sixty two buffaloes (³40 days postpartum) were divided in 2 groups (Group 1, n = 125, GnRH/ ½ dose de PGF2alpha/GnRH; Control Group, n = 137, GnRH/PGF2alpha/GnRH). Animals in Group 1 received 25mg of GnRH IM (Lecirelin, Gestran-plus®) and, seven days later, half dose of PGF2alpha IM (75mg d-cloprostenol, Preloban®). Two days after PGF2alpha injection, all animals received 25mg of GnRH IM (Lecirelin). Animals in Control Group received the same treatment, except for the dose of PGF2alpha(150mg, IM,...

For more than six decades, several studies have shown that genital products to entering the mantle cavity via the incurrent siphon, initiate in oyster, strong and rhythmic contractions of the adductor muscle (AM). In order to characterize the regulatory peptides capable of triggering AM contractions, we focused on the identification of putative myotropic peptides from genital products. Two experimental approaches were developed. The first one, based on a mass spectrometry screening of the male genital products, led to the identification of the tetrapeptide APGWamide. This neuropeptide was also detected in the seminal secretions of the cephalopod Sepia officinalis. In this species, APGWamide is directly involved in the oocyte transport. In Crassostrea, in...

Reproductive capacity is controlled by a large number of factors such as season, social interactions and metabolic status. However, the influence of emotional reactivity on reproductive success has not been intensively investigated in farm animals. In this review, we define emotion reactivity and the expression of its inter individual variability named temperament. We briefly describe our protocol to measure temperament in sheep and discuss the heritability of temperament traits. Using the results obtained from our flock of sheep selected for calm or nervous temperament, we illustrate how this selection affects the reproductive biology from changing the inexperienced ewe's response to the male effect to improving lamb survival and
