A deterministic simulation study of embryo marker-assisted selection for age at first calving in Nellore (Bos indicus) beef cattle Genet. Mol. Biol.
Rosa,Artur J.M.; Bijma,Piter; Oliveira,Henrique N.; Lôbo,Raysildo B.; van Arendonk,Johan A.M..
We used deterministic simulation of four alternative multiple ovulation and embryo manipulation (MOET) closed nucleus schemes to investigate the benefits of using marker-assisted selection (MAS) of Nellore (Bos indicus) beef cattle embryos prior to transplantation to reduce the age at first calving (AFC). We found that MAS resulted in increased genetic gain as compared to selection without AFC quantitative trait loci (AFC-QTL) information. With single-stage selection the genetic response (GR) increased as follows: GR = 0.68% when the AFC-QTL explained 0.02 of the AFC additive genetic variance (sigma2A); GR = 1.76% for AFC-QTL explaining 0.05 sigma2A; GR = 3.7% for AFC-QTL explaining 0.1 sigma2A; and GR = 55.76% for AFC-QTL...

A JUHOK MESTERSÉGES TERMÉKENYÍTÉSÉNEK ÉS IVARZÁS-INDUKÁLÁSÁNAK ÖKONÓMIAI ELEMZÉSE AgEcon
Vegh, Julianna; Gulyas, Laszlo; Szalka, Eva; Nemeth, Attila.

A new vision of the origin and the oocyte development in the Ostariophysi applied to Gymnotus sylvius (Teleostei: Gymnotiformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
França,Gisleine Fernanda; Grier,Harry J.; Quagio-Grassiotto,Irani.
Based on new knowledge coming from marine perciform species, the origin of oocytes and their development in the Ostariophysi, Gymnotus sylvius is described. In both Gymnotus sylvius and marine perciform fish, oogonia are found in the germinal epithelium that forms the surface of the ovarian lamellae. At the commencement of folliculogenesis, proliferation of oogonia and their entrance into meiosis gives rise to germ cell nests that extend into the stroma from the germinal epithelium. Both cell nests and the germinal epithelium are supported by the same basement membrane that separates them from the stroma. At the time of meiotic arrest, oocytes in a cell nest become separated one from the other as processes of prefollicle cells, these being derived from...

Ultrasonography (US) has been applied to the ovary and the uterus of domestic animals from the late 1980s, and established in 1990s as a practical tool for animal production. US made it possible to detect pregnancy at a very early stage and, most importantly, to observe the real-time dynamics of follicular development and hence the discovery of follicular waves. This has greatly contributed to our understanding of ovarian physiology and helped us to develop several "pin-point" protocols for hormonal treatment. While US may not seem to fit preconceived ideas of a "green" technology, it does not contravene environmental priorities, and it is non-invasive ("ethical") and non-hormonal ("clean"). Using the US technology that is now commercially available at a...

Accumulation of Eosinophils in the Infundibulum of the Bovine Oviduct Just after Ovulation OAK
KOWSAR, Rasoul; JIEMTAWEEBOON, Sineenard; SHIRASUNA, Koumei; SHIMIZU, Takashi; SASAKI, Motoki; KITAMURA, Nobuo; MIYAMOTO, Akio; 清水, 隆; 佐々木, 基樹; 宮本, 明夫.
This study was to investigate the localization and distribution of eosinophils (EOS) in the bovine oviduct throughout the estrous cycle. Histological studies revealed more abundant EOS in the infundibula of the oviducts ipsilateral to the preovulatory dominant follicle and the ovulated ovary. The number of EOS was higher in the infundibula of the oviducts ipsilateral to the ovulated ovary than those of the oviducts contralateral to the ovulated ovary. The infundibula of the oviducts ipsilateral to the preovulatory dominant follicle had higher number of EOS than those of the oviducts ipsilateral to the mid-cycle corpus luteum. The number of EOS in the isthmus, but not in the ampulla, was higher in the outer layers (tunica muscularis and tunica serosa) than...

Active Immunization Against 5α-androstane-3α, 17β-diol Increases Ovulation Rate in Merino Ewes OAK
TETSUKA, Masafumi; NANCARROW, Colin. D.; 手塚, 雅文.
Cyclic Merino ewes were immunized three times against 5α−androstane-3α,17β-diol (3α-diol) at three week intervals (weeks 0,3 and 6). After the third immunization, estrous cycles were synchronized by a series of PG injections and intensive blood samples were obtained for gonadotropin analyses during the mid-luteal phase and during the early follicular phase. Ovulation rates were determined after each immunization and subsequent cloprostenol (PG)-induced luteolysis (weeks 3, 6, 8 and 11). After the second immunization, daily blood samples were obtained and concentrations of plasma progesterone (P) were measured. Immunization against 3α-diol significantly increased the ovulation rate after...

Age determination and reproduction of female Fin Whales Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus, 1758), with special regard to baleen plates and ovaries Naturalis
Utrecht-Cock, C.N. van.
1. From Antarctic female Fin Whales, Balaenoptera physalus, a collection, consisting of baleen plates and the parts of these plates embedded in the gum, ovaries, and a number of earplugs was examined, in order to determine the age of these animals and to get a better insight in some characteristics of their reproduction. Data concerning pregnancy and lactation were also recorded. The material was sampled from animals worked up on board the f.f. “Willem Barendsz” during the Antarctic seasons 1953/1954 to 1959/1960 inclusive. The possibilities and values of age determination for this species were considered, based on the results of the analyses of the above material. 2. In most seasons the length distribution of the female Fin Whales, from which the material...

de la Vega,R; Díaz,G; Galán,M; Fernández,C.
The knowledge of the anatomy and histology of the female genital system in ticks is very important as a basic tool in all species in relation to morphological sciences and evolution, physiological events like ovulation, sexual behavior, maturation and mating, and also to research the interrelation tick-hemoparasite. The anatomy and histology of the female genital system in Boophilus microplus are scarcely studied. In the present paper, the female genital system of this tick has been considered as a whole and morphological and functional interrelations between different structures and also some other related items has been presented. Unfed and partially engorged females were employed in the study. The quality and resolution...

Borges,Luiz Felipe Kruel; Ferreira,Rogério; Siqueira,Lucas Carvalho; Bohrer,Rodrigo Camponogara; Borstmann,Jacson William; Oliveira,João Francisco Coelho de; Gonçalves,Paulo Bayard Dias.
The aim was to develop a timed artificial insemination (TAI) system in suckled beef cows. Cows (n=227), 60-80 days postpartum, received estradiol benzoate (5mg) and a vaginal device containing 250µg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA; day 0). On day six, cloprostenol (125µg) and eCG (400IU) were administrated and calves were weaned for 88h. The devices were removed on day seven (BioRep group) or on day eight (TAI group). All cows of TAI group and cows of BioRep group that did not exhibit standing estrus received GnRH (100µg) on day 9. In experiment I, the follicular growth was monitored daily by transrectal ultrasound exams, from day 6 to day 9. The average size of the dominant follicle on day nine was 11.1±0.99mm (BioRep, n=7) and 11.5±0.65mm (TAI, n=7)...

Bee venom treatment reduced C-reactive protein and improved follicle quality in a rat model of estradiol valerate-induced polycystic ovarian syndrome J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Karimzadeh,L; Nabiuni,M; Sheikholeslami,A; Irian,S.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a low grade inflammatory disease characterized by hyperandrogenemia and chronic anovulation. C-reactive protein (CRP), released by adipocytes, plays a key role in PCOS. Apis mellifera honeybee venom (HBV) contains a variety of biologically active components with various pharmaceutical properties. This study was designed to assess the possibility of HBV application as an anti-inflammatory therapeutic agent. To induce PCOS, 1 mg/100 g body weight estradiol valerate (EV) was subcutaneously (SC) injected into eight-week-old rats. After 60 days, 0.5 mg/kg HBV was administered SC for 14 consecutive days, and the results of PCOS treatment were investigated. Rats were then anesthetized with chloroform, and their ovaries and...

Birth Control Does Not Significantly Alter Women’s Preferences for Variants of Men’s Voices Nature Precedings
Jason W. J. W. W. Whitaker; Ryan R. S. Setten; Ulv U. A. Ankerstjerne.
Research shows that women‘s preferences for masculine voices (low pitch) vary as a function of the menstrual cycle, becoming positively augmented around ovulation. The proximate cause catalyzing this effect is attributed to fluctuating estrogen levels. Thus, the introduction of hormonally based birth control has been to shown to have a dampening effect in experiments researching women‘s preference of dimorphic secondary sexual characteristics. However, this dampening effect has not yet been explored in respect to women‘s preferences for masculine voice types. This experiment sought, first, to investigate the effect of birth control on subjects off and on birth control; and, second, to...

Changes in Follicular Vascularity during the First Follicular Wave in Lactating Cows OAK
ACOSTA, Tomas J.; HAYASHI, Ken-Go; MATSUI, Motozumi; MIYAMOTO, Akio; 松井, 基純; 宮本, 明夫.
Increase in the blood supply to individual follicles appears to be associated with follicular growth rates and the ability to become the dominant follicle, while reduced thecal vascularity appears to be closely associated with follicular atresia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the real-time changes in the vascularity of the follicle wall during the first follicular wave in cycling Holstein cows. Normally cycling and lactating cows (n=5) were examined by transrectal color Doppler ultrasonography (the sensitivity for velocity: > 2 mm/sec) to determine the changes in the vasculature of the follicle wall (presence or absence of blood flow) and the diameter of follicles. A new follicular wave and ovulation were...

Changes of Progesterone and Endothelin Concentrations in the Peripheral Plasma of Female Calves and Cycling Cows: Effects of PGF2α Injection OAK
OHTANI, Masayuki; OKI, Naoko; TANIMURA, Miyune; KOBAYASHI, Shu-ichi; ACOSTA, Tomas J.; HAYASHI, Kanako; MIYAMOTO, Akio; 宮本, 明夫.
It is well known that an injection of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) or its analogue during the mid luteal phase of the estrous cycle induces a rapid decrease in plasma progesterone (P4) concentration, followed by luteolysis in the cow. There is evidence that a potent vasoactive peptide, endothelin-1 (ET-1), is produced in the bovine corpus luteum (CL), and that it is directly involved in luteolysis. We previously found that ET-1 concentrations in the peripheral plasma increase during the period of luteolysis and ovulation in cows. However, it is not clear whether the elevation of peripheral plasma ET-1 concentration observed during luteolysis and ovulation originates exclusively from the ovary...

Garmo, Randi T.; Martin, A.D.; Thuen, E.; Havrevoll, Ø.; Steinshamn, H.; Prestløkken, E.; Randby, Å.; Eknæs, M.; Waldmann, A.; Reksen, O..
Progesterone profiles in Norwegian Red cows were categorized, and associations between the occurrence of irregularities in the profiles and the commencement of luteal activity were investigated. The cows were managed in 3 feeding trials from 1994 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2008 at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The cows were followed from calving, and the milk samples collected represented 502 lactations from 302 cows. Milk samples for progesterone analysis were taken 3 times weekly from 1994 throughout 1998 and from 2005 to 2008 and 2 times weekly from 1999 to 2001. Commencement of luteal activity was defined as the first day of 2 consecutive measurements of progesterone concentration ≥3 ng/mL not earlier than 10 d after calving. Delayed

Compte rendu des premières expérimentations de fécondation artificielle chez l'ombrine, Sciaenops ocellatus : études préliminaires de la maturation finale des ovocytes et de la qualité du sperme ArchiMer
Gardes, Lionel; Buchet, Vincent; Villanove, Philippe; Fauvel, Christian.
Artificial insemination mastery in red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, requires a first experimental step wOOng at getting basic biological data. Regarding males, a relation between optical density of the solution (OD) measured by spectrophotometry and sperm concentration (SC) has been established : OD O,161*SC + 0,119. Mean sperm concentration measured is 4,36.10 10 spz.mL-1. This study shows an influence of the solution of dilution on spermatozoa motility and its evolution during short term preservation. As far as females are concemed, the follow-up of final maturation through the observation of samples taken during reguIar strippings, seems to he a good technique to limit overripening and spontaneous liheration of ovules. Some artificial insemination trials...

Consequences of eight consecutive applications of equine chorionic gonadotropin on ovarian follicle development and ovulation in bos indicus cows Ciência Rural
Stuhr,Bhárbara Delboni; Gil,Isaac Santos; Lacerda,Tracy Ferreira; Favoreto,Mauricio Gomes; Loureiro,Bárbara.
ABSTRACT: The equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) is a glycoprotein produced in mare endometrial calices. In bovine, it is used in estrus synchronization protocols. However, studies have shown that it is potentially immunogenic and its effect can decrease after repetitive use. This study aimed to evaluate antral follicle dynamics, corpus luteum (CL) and ovulation rate in bos indicus cows submitted to an estrus synchronization protocol in association with eCG for eight times consecutively. Ten cyclical, multiparous, and pasture raised beef cows were divided into two groups: control group (n=5) and eCG group (n=5). In 30 day interval, all animals were synchronized with the same estrogen/progesterone based protocol,...

Controlling reproduction in organic sheep breeding: the influence of breeding factors on the effectiveness of the ram effect Organic Eprints
TOURNADRE, H.; PELLICER, M.; BOCQUIER, F..
The ram effect, which is a natural method for the control of reproduction in sheep, is an alternative to hormone treatments that are banned on organic farms. The ram effect induces a combination of ovulation and oestrus in ewes that is acyclic and conducive to artificial insemination. The proportion of acyclic females with induced ovulation and their subsequent fertility at the first oestrus is variable. The control of some breeding factors that have been studied here may help to reduce this variability. The proportion of ewes induced to ovulate by rams increased as the season advanced (54% in April vs. 84% at the end of May, p<0.05) and with a longer time period between drying-off and...
