On some phenomena concerning pregnancy and parturition of the Cetacea Naturalis
Slijper, E.J..
1. A review is given of some phenomena concerning pregnancy and parturition of the Cetacea, depending on data in literature and on observations made in Antarctic Blue and Fin Whales on board the f.f. “Willem Barendsz” (1946—1947). 2. In Mystacoceti the frequency of twins appears to be less than in man and the big domestic animals. The majority of twins is born by females that are longer than the average female in the period of greatest sexual activity. This does not mean, however, that just as in man most twins are born at an elder age than that corresponding with the maximum of sexual activity. It may also be possible that, just as in the big domestic animals, the ages correspond, but that twins are mostly produced by the physically stronger developed...

On the growth of the baleen plate of the Fin Whale and the Blue Whale Naturalis
Utrecht, W.L. van.
1. In Whales variations in the thickness of the baleen plates are supposed to give an insight into certain cyclical processes in the life of the animal. To a certain extent, by means of these variations, it is possible to reach conclusions about the age of the animal and/or about its recent period of life. In order to get a better insight in the significance of the variations in thickness of the baleen plate, researches are made in the histogenesis of the baleen plate of Fin Whales and Blue Whales, caught in the Antarctic waters. The variations in thickness are caused by variations in thickness of the cortex of the baleen plate. 2. The “root” of the baleen plate consists of the following parts: the corium wall, the epithelium that covers the corium wall,...

Age determination and reproduction of female Fin Whales Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus, 1758), with special regard to baleen plates and ovaries Naturalis
Utrecht-Cock, C.N. van.
1. From Antarctic female Fin Whales, Balaenoptera physalus, a collection, consisting of baleen plates and the parts of these plates embedded in the gum, ovaries, and a number of earplugs was examined, in order to determine the age of these animals and to get a better insight in some characteristics of their reproduction. Data concerning pregnancy and lactation were also recorded. The material was sampled from animals worked up on board the f.f. “Willem Barendsz” during the Antarctic seasons 1953/1954 to 1959/1960 inclusive. The possibilities and values of age determination for this species were considered, based on the results of the analyses of the above material. 2. In most seasons the length distribution of the female Fin Whales, from which the material...

Reproduction in the Lesser Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros hipposideros Bechstein, 1800) Naturalis
Gaisler, Jiří.
The present paper gathers the results of a morphological study on 149 specimens of Rhinolophus hipposideros, and of ecological investigations on additional material, incl. some 5,000 banded individuals of the same species. Brief description of the reproductive organs of both sexes is given. The reproductive organs of the sexually mature (adult) and the sexually immature grown-up (subadult) individuals are illustrated and comments are made on their changes during the year. In adult males, the spermatogenesis commences in spring, after the change from winter torpidity to active life, and culminates towards the end of July and in August. During the winter months (December to April), the seminiferous epithelium of the tubules of testes is resting. On the...

Comparison of records of baleen plates and of ear plugs in female Fin Whales, Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus, 1758) Naturalis
Utrecht, W.L. van; Utrecht-Cock, C.N. van.
1. From 54 female fin whales chosen at random from a greater number of animals from which data and material were collected during the Antarctic whaling season 1962/1963, records have been made of the baleen plates and the ear plugs. For the records the complete baleen plates including the part of the plates embedded in the gum are used. All ear plugs used for this study were complete and undamaged. 2. According to their ovaries and baleen records 50 animals were sexually mature, 4 animals were sexually immature. 3. In each individual the record of the complete baleen plate is entirely comparable to the record of the ear plug, in its general trend and in the sequence of peaks and hollows. Also the regular cyclic repetition found in the records of the baleen...

The biology of the burrowing crab, Corystes cassivelaunus Naturalis
Hartnoll, R.G..
Corystes cassivelaunus (Brachyura, Corystidae), a crab which burrows in clean sublittoral sand, was investigated at several inshore locations around the Isle of Man. It usually buries itself so as to leave little or no external sign of its presence. Immature crabs remain buried by day throughout the year, as also do mature crabs except during the breeding season from April to June. It is probable that Corystes emerges nocturnally to forage over the surface of the sand. The morphology of the respiratory system, and the respiratory behavior patterns, are both modified on account of the burrowing habit. The food consists almost entirely of burrowing invertebrates, predominantly lamellibranchs, polychaetes and amphipods. There is a puberty-moult in each sex,...

Elevage du bar américain Roccus Saxatilis (Walbaum, 1792) - I. Méthodes utilisées ArchiMer
Delor, Anne.

Progress in the controlled propagation of Clarias lazera (Cuvier & Valenciennes) ArchiMer
Hogendoorn, H..

New data on the possibilities of controlling reproduction in teleost fish by hormonal treatment ArchiMer
Zohar, Y.; Billard, R..
Some recent findings concerning hormonal treatments inducing or accelerating final stages of gametogenesis in some teleost fish are reviewed. In the rainbow trout and northern pike detailed research using in vivo and in vitro techniques led to a better understanding of the endocrine control of final stages of oogenesis. As a result, exogenous hormonal treatments, composed of a piscine gonadotropin administered alone or followed by 17a-hydroxy-20?-dihydroprogesterone injection were found to be effective inducers of precocious oocyte maturation and ovulation in the carq trout and pike. In all species fertilization rates of ovulated oocytes were high (more than 75 %). In the males of the trout, the pike and the goldfish,...

Induction of ovulation and stimulation of spermation by LHRH or an LHRH analog associated or not with pimozide. Effects on some teleost fish. ArchiMer
Billard, R; Weil, C; Barnabe, G.
Effectiveness of LHRH and one of its analogs (LHRH-A = D-Ala super(6) ethylamide) on induction of ovulation and stimulation of spermiation is reviewed here. LHRH was also combined with pimozide, an anti-dopaminergic agent, to try to cancel dopamine inhibition of gonatotropin (GtH) release. LHRH-A alone (50 mu g/kg) did not initiate ovulation but only oocyte maturation. When pimozide (10 mg/kg) and LHRH-A (50 mu g/kg) were combined, gonadotropic hormone secretion was significantly increased, causing ovulation and stimulating spermiation. This combination advanced ovulation in trout. Trout egg quality was markedly altered by...

Effect of stripping frequency on turbot spawn quality. ArchiMer
Fauvel, Christian; Omnes, Marie-helene; Suquet, Marc; Normant, Yvon.
In production operations the application of daily examination of each female of broodstock should be a determinant progress in hatchery management in terms of fry output. The eggs expelled shortly after ovulation by means of a systematic fivefold a week stripping attempt of females, presented a high viability rate (72%) compared to that of eggs collected twice a week (46%) whereas the treatments did not have any effect on female fecundity. Increase of the stripping rhythm brought the hatching rates and broodstock fertilities respectively from 11% to 35% and from 20,000 to 65,000 larvae/kg of spawning female. The enhancement of egg quality and of the resulting larva production is discussed.

Egg production in the turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) in relation to broodstock management ArchiMer
Omnes, Marie-helene; Normant, Yvon; Suquet, Marc; Fauvel, Christian.
Egg production data from individual hand stripped female turbot were collected and analysed over several consecutive spawning seasons, on natural or shifted conditions. Egg quantity, egg viability and number of spawns were examined from one spawning season to the other, and inside the spawning season. These parameters seemed to increase from a year to the next one, except for the oldest fishes. Spawns were spread over a three-month period and occurred at the same time in the period in successive seasons for most females. Egg production seemed related to the feeding level and the earliness of spawning season appeared depended on the growth rate. Without sand substrate in tanks, injuries could increase therefore no significant differences were observed in...

The effect of feed supplementation on the onset of puberty in Brazilian dairy heifers Scientia Agricola
Meirelles,C.F.; Abdalla,A.L.; Vitti,D.M.S.S..
Most Brazilian dairy production is conducted by small holders whose general management skills and feeding programs are often deficient. One common problem directly attributed to underfeeding is that heifers rarely reach sexual maturity before 15 months of age. Groups of growing heifers were treated to detect the effects of protein supplementation and antihelmintic treatment on sexual maturity. The first ovulation occurred at 513 ± 44 and 573 ± 36 days (P<.01) in supplemented and control groups, respectively. Liveweight gains from start of the trial to the first ovulation were 378 ±.02 and 331 ±.04 g for suplemented (S) and control (C) groups. Only 52.17 % of heifers in C group (11 of...

Endocrine profiles and ovulation rate of cows superovulated with FSH following passive immunization against steroid free-bovine follicular fluid Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
ALVAREZ,Rafael Herrera; CARVALHO,João Batista Pereira de; ROSA E SILVA,Alzira; PERONE,Cibele Nunes; RIBELA,Maria Tereza Carvalho Pinto; OLIVEIRA FILHO,Enoch Borges de.
Ten multiparous non-lactating cows were randomly assigned to one of two groups. On days 8 to 12 after estrus, the first group was given 100 ml antiserum against steroid-free bovine follicular fluid (anti-bFF), which was produced in ovariectomized sheep. The second group (control) was given 100 ml nonimmune ovariectomized sheep serum. Six hours after injection, both groups were superovulated with FSH (18 NIH-FSH-S1 units) and LH (0.29 NIH-LH-S1 units) in a 4-day decreasing regime. On the morning of the third day a luteolytic dose of prostaglandin F2alpha analogue (cloprostenol) was given. Artificial inseminations (AI) were done 48 and 60 h later. Embryos were collected 7 days after AI by a nonsurgical method. Blood samples were taken throughout the...
