Cultivar and Year-to-Year Variation of Phytosterol Content in Rye (Secale cereale L.) Organic Eprints
Zangenberg, M.; Hansen, H.B.; Jørgensen, J.R.; Hellgren, L.I..
Intake of phytosterols (and -stanols) has been shown to decrease the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and thus protect against development of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, studies on the cultivar and year-to-year variation in phytosterol content in rye grains have been performed. The phytosterol content and composition of different rye cultivars, grown under identical conditions on the same field in three consecutive years, were analyzed. Both cultivar and year-to-year variation in sterol content were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). The total sterol content varied from 1007 ± 21 mg/kg in the highest yielding cultivar, Tsulpan 3, to 761 ± 10 mg/kg in the lowest...

Reducing intra-row weed numbers in row crops by means of a biennial cultivation system Organic Eprints
Melander, Senior scientist Bo; Rasmussen, Scientist Karsten.
Intra-row weed emergence in row crops can be reduced by means of a biennial cultivation system that is based on an exhaustion of the weed seedbank in the upper soil layer of crop-free bands established in a preceding cereal crop, year I, prior to the row crop, year II. In this study, a series of field experiments is presented focussing more specifically on the influence of prevention of weed seed shedding and of different cultivation tactics in the system on intra-row weed emergence in the bands in year II. As the system excludes inverting soil tillage between year I and year II, the...

Walkenhorst, M.; Heil, F.; Ivemeyer, S.; Notz, Ch.; Mäschli, A.; Klocke, P..
The pro-q-project is an udder health programme especially for organic farmers under Swiss conditions. The aim is to minimize the use of s antibiotics and to assure a good udder health state on the farms. At the end of the third project year of 100 project farms 16 participate for more than two years. The udder health situation of these 16 farms improved moderately in the second project year (37% of the cows with a so-matic cell count > 100’000/ml) compared to the year before project start (40% of the cows with a somatic cell count > 100’000/ml). Furthermore, a nearly linear increase of the arithmetic mean of herd lactation number (3.27

Grain Yield Prediction of Henan Province Based on Spatio-temporal Regression Model AgEcon
Liu, Qin-pu.
By using correlation analysis method, regression analysis method and time sequence method, we combine time and space, to establish grain geld spatio-temporal regression prediction model of Henan Province and ail prefecture-level cities. At first, we use the grain geld in prefecture-level cities of Henan in the year 2000 and 2005, to establish regression model, and then taking the grain yield in one year as independent variable, we predict the grain yield in the fifth year afterwards. Taking the dependent variable value as independent variable again, we predict the grain geld at an interval of the same years, and based on this, predict

Fine-root production in two secondary forest sites with distinct ages in Eastern Amazon Acta Amazonica
Lima,Tâmara Thaiz Santana; Miranda,Izildinha Souza; Vasconcelos,Steel Silva.
The objective of this work was to assess the fine-root (≤ 2 mm diameter) production dynamics of two forest regrowths at different ages. Fine-root production was monitored by the ingrowth core method in one 18-year-old site (2 ha) and one 10-year-old site (0.5 ha), both localized in the Apeú region, Northern Pará State, Brazil. The sites were abandoned after successive shifting cultivation, beginning in 1940. Monthly production of live fine-root was similar between sites and was influenced by rainfall seasonality, with higher production during the dry season than the wet season for mass and length. However, mortality in terms of mass was higher in the 10-

Student Retention: Impacts of an Agricultural Economics First Year Seminar Course AgEcon
Reaves, Dixie Watts; Marchant, Mary A..
As universities seek to enhance student retention, a positive first year experience is critical for student success. The objective of this research is to determine whether an agricultural economics first-year seminar course improves retention rates of its undergraduate students. This course provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about the agricultural economics discipline, and also gain insights into what it takes to be a successful college student. Analysis examines whether departmental retention and graduation rates improve after course implementation in 1998, and compares departmental retention and graduation rates to those of the college and university. Qualitative...

ECONOMIC LINKAGES BETWEEN COASTAL WETLANDS AND HUNTING AND FISHING: A REVIEW OF VALUE ESTIMATES REPORTED IN THE PUBLISHED LITERATURE AgEcon
Kazmierczak, Richard F., Jr..
This manuscript summarizes a total of 12 peer-reviewed studies, published from 1978 to 2001, reporting 32 separate estimates for the disaggregate2 value of hunting and fishing services provided by coastal and non-coastal wetlands. Estimates ranged across three orders of magnitude and are highly dependent on the specific geographic site providing the service, the target species of the hunting and fishing activity, and the measurement technique. Considering only coastal zone wetlands across all study categories, the value of wetlands to single-target hunting and fishing (oysters, menhaden, etc.) ranged from $1.05/acre/year to $663.74/acre/year, with a mean and median of $113.95/acre/

Which factors drive which volatility in the grain sector? AgEcon
Ott, Herve.
The present paper attempts to find empirical evidence on volatility in the grain sector (wheat, corn and soybean). The first challenge is to measure volatility. Intra-year volatility, inter-year volatility in level and return, also conditional volatility are defined and then calculated. The second challenge is to determine which factors impact volatility. The results show that depending on how volatility is measured, factors driving volatility are very different regarding their quantitative importance. Low stock to use ratio drives up mostly intra-year volatility but only moderately inter-year volatility and has almost no...

Good year, bad year: changing strategies, changing networks? A two-year study on seed acquisition in northern Cameroon Ecology and Society
Analysis of seed exchange networks at a single point in time may reify sporadic relations into apparently fixed and long-lasting ones. In northern Cameroon, where environment is not only strongly seasonal but also shows unpredictable interannual variation, farmers’ social networks are flexible from year to year. When adjusting their strategies, Tupuri farmers do not systematically solicit the same partners to acquire the desired propagules. Seed acquisitions documented during a single cropping season may thus not accurately reflect the underlying larger social network that can be mobilized at the local level. To test this hypothesis, we documented, at the outset of two cropping...
