A Long Gravity-Piston Corer Developed for Seafloor Gas Hydrate Coring Utilizing an In Situ Pressure-Retained Method ArchiMer
Chen, Jia-wang; Fan, Wei; Bingham, Brian; Chen, Ying; Gu, Lin-yi; Li, Shi-lun.
A corer, which can obtain long in situ pressure-retained sediments of up to 30 m core containing gas hydrates, has been applied in the South China Sea (SCS) dozens of times. The corer presented in this paper is a convenient, efficient and economical long in situ pressure-retained coring and research tool for submarine sediments, that can applied to completely cope with all sediments close to the seafloor ranging from shallow waters to the deep sea depths of 6000 m. This article mainly presents the overall structure, working principles, key pressure-retained components, coring mechanism, sea trials and outlook of the corer. The analyses found that the coring ability was affected by formation characteristics, the outer diameter of the core barrels and inner...

Simulation of tensile tests of hemp fibre using discrete element method CIGR Journal
Chen, Ying; Sadek, Mohammad A.; Guzman, Leno; Lague, Claude; Landry, Hubert.
Abstract: Tensile strength is an important property of hemp fibre, because it determines the mechanical strength of fibre-based products such as biocomposites.  Commercial discrete element software, Particle Flow Code in Three Dimensions (PFC3D), was used to develop a numerical model which simulates tensile tests of hemp fibre.  The model can predict the tensile properties (such as strength and elongation) of a hemp fibre. In the model, a virtual hemp fibre was defined as a string of spherical balls, held together by cylindrical bonds implemented in PFC3D.  To calibrate the model, tensile data was collected for both unretted and retted hemp fibres using a commercial Instron testing system.  The average fibre diameter was 0.34 mm for the unretted fibre and...

Application of PFC3D to simulate a planetary ball mill CIGR Journal
Chen, Ying; Guzman, Leno; Potter, Simon; Khan, Majibur.
Planetary ball mill is a versatile machine which has been used for grinding different types of materials for size reduction and lately for hemp decortication. PFC3D, software employing the discrete element method (DEM), was used to simulate the power and energy requirement of grinding hemp for fibre using a planetary ball mill. The simulation was facilitated through a series of hemp grinding tests using the planetary ball mill to examine the power draw of the mill. The test results identified that grinding speed had a significant effect on the power draw of the mill. The power draw data were used to calibrate the discrete element parameters for different grinding speeds. Using the calibrated parameters, one was able to predict the kinetic energy and...

Simulation of soil dynamic properties of a seed opener using the discrete element method (DEM) CIGR Journal
Chen, Ying; Gao, Qun; Zhou, Haibo; Sadek, Mohammad A..
Soil disturbance and draft force are important soil dynamic properties and performance indicators for a seed opener. In this study, a soil-opener model was developed to simulate soil dynamic properties of a hoe type seed opener using the discrete element method (DEM). To validate the model, a paired-row hoe opener was tested in a sandy loam soil at a working depth of 40 mm and a travel speed of 7 km/h. Soil disturbance characteristics (maximum soil surface roughness and soil cover depth) and draft force of the opener were measured. The model results agreed well with the test results, with relative errors under 10%. The validated model was used to compare the soil dynamic properties among a single-row opener, a side-band opener, and a paired-row opener. The...
