Evaluating New Beef Production Technologies and Their Impact on the Sustainability of a Grazing System: A Stochastic Dynamic Model AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Cacho, Oscar J.; Griffith, Garry R..
Net feed efficiency (NFE) technology is expected to improve the productivity of grazing systems in Australia's southern beef producing regions. The extended time path required for implementation of this genetic technology into commercial herds and the influence of climatic variability on the pasture base are important issues to address in estimating the benefits of this technology at the farm level. NFE also has the potential to impact on the sustainability of the grazing systems in terms of maintaining adequate pasture cover. These issues are investigated by developing a stochastic dynamic simulation model. The bioeconomic model includes pasture, animal production, herd dynamics and economic sub-models. In this paper the model is presented and the...

The Economic Effects of Early-Life Nutritional Constraints in Crossbred Cattle Bred on the NSW North Coast AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Cafe, Linda M.; Greenwood, Paul L.; Griffith, Garry R..
Different patterns of nutrition during pregnancy and lactation can influence cow productivity and the performance of their offspring. An experiment was conducted on the North Coast of NSW whereby “low” and “high” pasture nutritional systems were imposed on a herd of Hereford cows during pregnancy, and then again from birth to weaning, with a crossover design also imposed to select offspring with extremes of growth to birth and/or weaning. Thus, four growth groups resulted – low-low, low-high, high-low, and high-high. Piedmontese and Wagyu bulls were used. After weaning, these offspring were grown out on the NSW Northern Tablelands and then finished to heavy market weights in a feedlot. The results of the experiment indicated that restricted early-life...

The Measurement, Monitoring and Evaluation Strategy AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Clark, Richard A.; Griffith, Garry R..
A critical component of the Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI&I) process described in Paper 4 above is Performance Assessment - analysing and interpreting the results achieved, and not achieved, in relation to the focus and target outcomes. This is made easier if specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are established during Action Design and monitored during Action Implementation. The target outcome for the Measurement, Monitoring and Evaluation (MME) Strategy is to design and implement effective and efficient MME mechanisms that will demonstrate improvements and innovations in individual beef businesses and supply chains and in the broader Australian beef industry.

A Northern Tablelands Whole-Farm Linear Program for Economic Evaluation of New Technologies at the Farm-Level AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Griffith, Garry R.; Cacho, Oscar J..
The benefits of evaluating a new technology in a whole-farm context using a linear programming framework are well known. Linear programming allows the joint evaluation of concurrent farm activities, while considering the costs and returns of all enterprises and any resource adjustments imposed by adoption of the technology. This Report provides a rationale for and description of a whole-farm linear programming model that can be used for the economic evaluation of new technologies that are applicable to beef/sheep grazing farms typical of the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales. In this farming system, the whole-farm focus incorporates various aspects of the pasture base, resource constraints and sheep and cattle interactions. An overview of economic...

Farm-level Economic Evaluation of Net Feed Efficiency in Australia’s Southern Beef Cattle Production System: A Multi-period Linear Programming Approach AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Griffith, Garry R.; Cacho, Oscar J..
Selection of beef cattle for increased net feed efficiency is a current major focus for research. At present the trait seems to be more apparent in Australia’s southern beef production system which is dominated by mixed farming enterprises. Farm-level evaluation of net feed efficiency should take account of the farming system for which it is proposed along with the dynamic nature of genetic selection. Gross margin, linear programming and multi-period linear programming approaches to evaluation of the trait at the farm-level using a representative farm are compared. Implications of the trait for researchers and beef producers are identified

Livestock Farming Systems in the Northern Tablelands of NSW: An Economic Analysis AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Griffith, Garry R.; Davies, Lloyd.
The Northern Tablelands region of New South Wales covers an area of approximately 3.12 million hectares including 2.11 million hectares occupied by some 2300 agricultural establishments producing agricultural commodities valued at more than $220 million. Sheep and wool production and cattle production are the dominant agricultural enterprises. In this Report, a whole-farm model of a representative livestock farming system in the Northern Tablelands is developed. Whole-farm economic models of the relevant farming system are a useful first step in understanding the nature of the biological and economic constraints facing producers in their decision making in relation to their choices of inputs and outputs. Such models are also useful in relation to more...

The Reporting and Support Framework AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Purcell, Dougal; Clark, Richard A.; Griffith, Garry R..
The Reporting and Support Framework is an integral component of the Measuring, Monitoring and Evaluation (MME) strategy. This framework is designed to capture changes in practices, processes and outcomes in the CI&I partnerships and in beef businesses, partnerships, value chains and the broader Australian beef industry so as to provide support within the CI&I partnerships and to meet project and CRC reporting requirements. Because of the multiple users of the information, and the multiple environments in which it is expected to be used, the BPP reporting and support framework has been a difficult framework to develop. There have been several versions that have been adapted and improved over time, but we hope that it is now sufficiently flexible to...

Distribution of Gains from Cattle Development in a Multi-Stage Production System: The Case of the Bali Beef Industry AgEcon
Ambarawati, I Gusti Agung Ayu; Zhao, Xueyan; Griffith, Garry R.; Piggott, Roley R..
Beef production in Bali is dominated by smallholders, just like the majority of Indonesian agriculture. A wide range of policies has been implemented to enhance development of the Bali beef industry. Knowledge about the distribution of the returns from the development of the cattle industry, including marketing, informs decision making. This paper examines the benefits from cattle development in a multi-stage production representation of the Bali beef industry using equilibrium displacement modelling (EDM). Benefits are measured as changes in economic surplus. The distribution of benefits among farmers, processors and retailers is also examined.

A Multilevel Economic Analysis of the Wheat Market in Pakistan AgEcon
Ashfaq, Muhammad; Parton, Kevin A.; Griffith, Garry R.; Piggott, Roley R..
Government price policy in Pakistan affects both the supply and demand of wheat. The wheat market has been established in a particular idiosyncratic manner in Pakistan, and a thorough appraisal of policy needs to take this into account. Hence, to analyse various policy interventions, this study develops a multi-level wheat market model. After considering the real world aspects of the wheat marketing chain, a conceptual framework is developed involving five market levels. This is then translated into a multi-equation econometric model. The model is based on secondary time series data from 1971 to 1996. It consists of equations representing supply, demand, stock holding, importing and price formation. The model is used to estimate changes in consumer...

Australian consumers' willingness to pay and willingness to purchase a hypothetical lower cholesterol pork product AgEcon
Bellhouse, Amy; Malcolm, Bill; Griffith, Garry R.; Dunshea, Frank.
This study investigated whether there would be an increase in consumer willingness to pay and purchase if reduced cholesterol pork was introduced to the Australian market. A stated choice analysis was used, with the following questions addressed. How are current purchases of fresh pork affected by concerns about cholesterol content? What financial premium, if any, would consumers place on reduced cholesterol pork? Would consumers buy more pork if a low cholesterol option were available? Is there a group of consumers, such as those with high cholesterol, who have an increased willingness to pay for or purchase reduced cholesterol pork when compared to consumers without this health problem? Results from this study indicated that at present the majority of...

Examining long-run relationships between Australian beef prices AgEcon
Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Griffith, Garry R..
Cointegration and impulse response analyses are used to investigate the short‐run and long‐run dynamics of the Australian beef market. The aim of this study is to determine whether long‐run relationships existed between Australian beef prices at the farm, wholesale and retail levels. Based on monthly data from 1971 to 1994, the results show that all three prices considered are cointegrated. Furthermore, the wholesale price is found to be weakly exogenous. The latter result might be an indication of market inefficiency due in part to price levelling often practised in the beef marketing system.

An Overview of the Organic Food Products Market in Australia AgEcon
Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Griffith, Garry R.; Zepeda, Lydia.
Worldwide, the demand for organic food products appears to have expanded quickly in recent years, stimulated by consumer perceptions that organic products are safe, clean and ethical. The growth rate was estimated to be around 10-20 per cent per annum in the next few years, with sales reaching $US 29-31 billion in 2005. The biggest growth in consumption has occurred in developed countries, such as the United States, Western Europe, and Japan that are also major importers of organic foods. It is clear that Australia, traditionally a major exporter of agricultural products, stands to benefit from the expansion in demand for organic products. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the Australian organic food products industry, including...

The Continuous Improvement and Innovation Process AgEcon
Clark, Richard A.; Timms, Janice; Griffith, Garry R..
Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI&I) is both a management process and a management strategy. In this paper we aim to provide some background on the development of CI&I as a management concept and to describe the steps involved in implementing the CI&I process in the Beef CRC project. There are six key steps in the CI&I process: Situation Analysis; Impact Analysis; Action Design; Action Implementation; Results Assessment; and Creation and Synthesis. Focus and Refocus steps are added at the front and back respectively. We also describe how to use CI&I as rapid improvement and innovation.

The Sustainable Improvement and Innovation Model AgEcon
Clark, Richard A.; Timms, Janice; Parnell, Peter F.; Griffith, Garry R..
The Beef CRC's 'Sustainable Beef Profit Partnerships' (BPP) project is built around the Sustainable Improvement and Innovation (SI&I) Model – a model for the design, leadership and management of projects to achieve rapid and sustained improvement and innovation, and accelerated adoption. The model is implemented through a systemic approach to project design, and the development of a number of integrated strategies to guide the targeting of priority outcomes and work plans. The emphasis is on a sustainable project methodology such that the intended outcomes can continue to be delivered long after the Beef CRC funding is terminated. Further, there is an emphasis on rapid implementation of the process in the short-term such that outcomes can be generated...

Does Excluding Cross-commodity Interactions Matter? Beef and Lamb in Australia AgEcon
Dent, Siobahn K.; Piggott, Roley R.; O'Donnell, Christopher J.; Griffith, Garry R..
Australian broadacre agriculture is typified by strong cross-commodity relationships, where sheep and cattle grazing enterprises compete for pasture and both compete with wheat and other crops for land. Further, some commodities produced by multi-product farms are also used in the production of final products that are substitutes in demand, such as beef and lamb. Economic analyses of the beef market, for example, should also include consideration of the market for the related product, lamb. In this paper the effects of exogenous demand and supply shifters on the wholesale-farm price ratio in two closely related industries, beef and lamb, are examined in a Gardner type of model and the effects of excluding consideration of the cross-commodity interactions...

The Demand for Beef in Indonesia: Implications for Australian Agribusiness AgEcon
Doran, Howard E.; O'Donnell, Christopher J.; Griffith, Garry R.; Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Hutasuhut, Maradoli.
Meat consumption and socio-demographic data from the 1990, 1993 and 1996 SUSENAS Household Food Expenditure and Consumption Surveys were employed to estimate the demand for meats in Indonesia. The focus was on the Provinces of DKI Jakarta and West Java where about one-fourth of the Indonesian population reside. Statistical and econometric procedures were used to aggregate the 16 meat types recorded in the SUSENAS into four Meat Groups. They were then used to estimate the Linear Approximation of the Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) model, taking into account zero observations and the restrictions on budget shares. The demand for Meat Group 1 (with the dominant meat, beef) is income-inelastic, whereas for Meat Group 2 (with the dominant meat,...

Animal Efficiency in an Intensive Beef Production System AgEcon
Fleming, Euan M.; Fleming, Pauline; Rodgers, Heidi; Griffith, Garry R.; Johnston, David.
A stochastic input distance function is estimated to analyse the efficiency with which physical characteristics of individual lot-fed beef cattle in Australia are combined with conventional inputs to produce a final product possessing defined quality attributes. High mean technical efficiency estimates are reported for all animals and by breed. All partial output elasticities with respect to inputs are of expected sign. Of four outputs included in the analysis, carcass weight and moisture retention in meat after cooking have highly significant coefficients of expected sign, but two meat quality variables have coefficients of unexpected sign indicating that they decline as inputs increase. Some evidence is detected of scope economies between moisture...

Estimation of a Multi-Input Multi-Output Model of Lot-Fed Beef Cattle in Australia AgEcon
Fleming, Pauline; Fleming, Euan M.; Griffith, Garry R.; Johnston, David.
Most analyses of technical efficiency and productivity focus on the activities of firms or institutions using inputs to produce outputs. In this paper, we report the results of an efficiency analysis that is couched in a different context. We analyse the efficiency with which physical characteristics of individual lot-fed Australian beef cattle are combined with conventional inputs to produce a final product with several attributes that consumers value. Data on 214 animals across seven breeds were used to estimate a stochastic input distance function with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. Estimates were obtained after controlling for differences between breeds, seasons and sex. Because of variations in feeding regimes for different markets, the data...

Issues in evaluating generic promotion in the food chain AgEcon
Goddard, Ellen W.; Freebairn, John W.; Griffith, Garry R..
Some issues in the evaluation of generic promotion have received relatively little attention. The agricultural economics literature on brand versus generic advertising is often simple empirically and has not related well to the burgeoning marketing literature on brand/private label strategies. Conversely, that literature does not often consider the implication of the strategies for any but consumers, processors and retailers. Thus, there is a significant gap in terms of branding strategy implications for farmers, in spite of the fact that many farm groups and co-operatives feel that this should be their main marketing goal. This issue becomes more relevant for exporting countries such as Australia given the requirement for country-of-origin labelling in...
