Impact of large-scale organic conversion on food production and food security in two Indian states, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh Organic Eprints
Panneerselvam, P.; Hermansen, J.E.; Halberg, N.; Arthanari, P.M..
The millions of food insecure people in India are not solely due to inadequate food production, but also because some people are simply too poor to buy food. This study assessed how a large-scale conversion from conventional to organic production would impact on the economics of marginal and small farmers in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh, and on the total food production in these states. This study also considered a situation where fertilizer subsidies would be discontinued, with farmers having to carry the full cost of fertilizer. Results show that conversion to organic improved the economic situation of farmers although food production was reduced by 3–5% in the organic situation. Thus, the estimated economic values were higher in the organic system...

Indian farmers' experience and perceptions of organic farming Organic Eprints
Panneerselvam, P.; Halberg, N.; Vaarst, M.; Hermansen, J.E..
In India, the number of farmers converting to organic farming has increased in the recent past despite the lack of government support in providing knowledge and extension to the farmers. The aim of this article is to investigate the perceived relevance, benefits and barriers to a conversion to organic agriculture in three different Indian contexts - in Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand states. In each state, 40 farmers from both organic and conventional systems were interviewed. The findings indicated that conventional producers identified production and marketing barriers as the main constraints to adopting organic farming, while the age and education of the farmer were not deemed a problem. Lack of knowledge and lack of institutional support...

Induction of lactational estrus in organic piglet production Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Hermansen, J.E..
The longer lactation period required in organic piglet producing herds reduces the potential number of produced litters per sow per year compared with that of conventional production. Induction and use of lactational estrus may be a way to increase the productivity in organic production. However, if lactational estrus is to be beneficial under practical husbandry conditions, it is crucial that the majority of sows are successfully mated within a few days to make batch farrowing procedures possible. The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence and timing of lactational estrus in an organic outdoor system based on ad libitum feeding, individual housing until Day 35 in lactation, followed by grouping and introduction of a boar and weaning of...

Influence of genotype and feeding strategy on pig performance, plasma concentrations of micro nutrients, immune responses and fecal microbiota composition of growing-finishing pigs in a forage-based system Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Nørgaard, J.V.; Jensen, S.K.; Lauridsen, C.; Juul-madsen, H.R.; Norup, L.R.; Engberg, R.G.; Horsted, K.; Hermansen, J.E..
Among consumers in Europe and other parts of the world there is an increasing interest in high-value pork positioned with regard to animal welfare (Krystallis et al., 2012). Free-range pork production is considered more animal friendly because the system enables the animals to express their natural behaviour to a large degree. However, outdoor production of growing-finishing pigs on pastures as described by Halberg et al. (2010) has a major drawback in terms of high risk of nitrate leaching (Eriksen et al., 2006ab; Salomon et al., 2007). This is to a large extent related to high stocking densities combined with large input of nutrients from the supplementary feed (Eriksen et al., 2006ab). The use of supplementary feed is often higher in free-range compared...

Mere kvalitet og diversitet i økologisk svineproduktion Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Claudi-Magnussen, C.; Hermansen, J.E.; Andersen, B.H..

Hegelund, L.; Hermansen, J.E.; Sørensen, J.T.; Horsted, K..

Organic agriculture in relation to food security of developing countries Organic Eprints
Panneerselvam, P.; Halberg, N.; Hermansen, J.E..
A study was conducted to investigate the differences in farm production, input use and farm income between organic and conventional systems in three regions (Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh and Tamilnadu) of India. From each region, 40 organic and 40 conventional farmers were interviewed with semi structured questionnaire. The results showed that input costs were less in the organic system while either total farm yield or net margin was righter in the organic system in two of the three regions. In Tamilnadu specializing in rice production, rice yield was less under organic system while net margin did not differ signifcantly. In addition, the IFPRI-IMPACT model was used to fnd out the impact of large scale conversion to organic farming on food security of...

Organic and Low-Input Dairy Farming: Avenues to Enhance Sustainability and Competitiveness in the EU Organic Eprints
Scollan, Nigel; Padel, Susanne; Halberg, Niels; Hermansen, J.E.; Nicholas, Pip; Rinne, Marketta; Zanoli, Raffaele; Zollitsch, Werner; Lauwers, Ludwig.
Whether farming strategies built on continuing input intensification or relying on integrated natural resource management are more sustainable and competitive is at the core of the agricultural development debate. The five-year (2011–16) Sustainable Organic and Low Input Dairying (SOLID) project, funded by the European Commission, involved 25 partners across 10 European countries and was designed to support innovation in European organic and low-input dairy farming. Results show that such systems are very diverse, and need tailor-made farm-specific strategies and related policy measures. This article shows that low-input dairying has country-specific farm characteristics, and is potentially competitive when compared to more intensive dairying systems....

Organic livestock systems: characteristics and challenges for improvement Organic Eprints
Hermansen, J.E.; Kristensen, T.; Ronchi, B..
There is generally a growing interest for organically produced food in Europe and North America, although in some countries the interest is stagnating. Organic animal productions in some countries make up to 10% of total production. The development of organic farming is driven by a mutual interest among: farmers who are sceptical towards the methods of conventional farming or aim for possible premium prices; consumers perceiving the products to be safer; and authorities seeing organic farming as a tool to reduce environmental load of the livestock farming systems. Existing evidence shows that levels of production experienced in organic production are often moderately reduced compared to conventional production or in some cases considerable lower (piglets...

Outdoor production of slaughter pigs requires an optimized management to mitigate N pollution Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Hermansen, J.E..
In Danish outdoor pig production the sows are usually kept on grassland, while their progeny are transferred at weaning to indoor housing with access to an outdoor concrete pen. It may seem paradoxical that a large part of meat consumed from outdoor systems comes from pigs that during the majority of their life have been prevented from natural behaviour such as rooting, digging and grazing. The explanation is the drawbacks of rearing growers outdoors including huge space demand, high work expenditure, high feed consumption and high environmental costs due to nutrient losses to aquifers and the atmosphere caused by high nutrient load and difficulty maintaining grass cover. However, it may be questioned if pigs reared indoors comply with consumers’...
