Potential loss of nutrients from different rearing strategies for fattening pigs on pasture Organic Eprints

Nutrient load and distribution on pasture were investigated with fattening pigs that: 1) spend a proportion of or their entire life on pasture, 2) were fed either restrictively or ad libitum, and 3) were weaned at different times of the year. The N and P retention in pigs decreased the longer they were kept on pasture. The contents of soil inorganic N and exchangeable K were significantly raised compared to the soil outside the enclosures but with no differences between treatments. Pig grazing did not affect extractable soil P. Regular moving of huts, feeding and water troughs was effective in ensuring that nutrients were more evenly distributed on the paddocks. Produktion af slagtekyllinger i frugtplantage åbner en spændende mulighed for større spiseoplevelse for den kvalitetsbevidste forbruger. Sensorikbedømmelser af brystkødet fra to typer slagtekyllinger, JA757 og New Hampshire viste en markant forskellig sensorisk profil. Hvor JA757 fik bedre score i visse lugt og smagsegenskaber, opnåede New Hampshire bedre score i teksturegenskaber som f.eks. mørhed og saftighed. For begge afstamninger var smagen og lugten af frisk kylling lavere ved højere slagtealder.

Produktions- og miljømæssig samt økonomisk vurdering af økologiske svineproduktionssystemer baseret på slagtesvins fouragering Organic Eprints

I økologisk svineproduktion som den foregår i Danmark i dag, har søer på friland i vid udstrækning mulighed for at udføre naturlig adfærd. Både søer og slagtesvin får tildelt grovfoder, har relativt meget plads at bevæge sige på og har adgang til friland og udendørs arealer. Disse fordele menes at være basis for det lave antibiotikaforbrug der ses i den økologiske svineproduktion (Bonde & Sørensen, 2004; Edwards, 2005). Der er imidlertid også en række ulemper af miljø- og velfærdsmæssig karakter knyttet til især den økologiske slagtesvineproduktion. Sensory profile of breast meat from broilers reared in an organic niche production system and conventional standard broilers Organic Eprints

BACKGROUND: A sensory panel evaluated the sensory profile of breast meat from five broiler products: two conventional standard products (A and B) and three organic niche genotypes (I657, L40, K8) reared in an apple orchard. RESULTS: Twenty-two sensory attributes were evaluated, and 13 differed significantly between the products. The aromas ‘chicken’, ‘bouillon’ and ‘fat’ scored highest and the ‘iron/liver’ aroma lowest for the niche products. The meat was more ‘tender’, ‘short’ and ‘crumbly’, and less ‘hard’ and ‘stringy’ in the standard products than in one or more of the niche products. BACKGROUND: Breast meat from broilers produced in very different production systems may vary considerable in sensory profile, which may affect consumer interests. In this study the aim was to evaluate differences in the sensory profiles of breast meat from five broiler products: two conventional standard products (A and B) and three organic niche genotypes (I657, L40 and K8) reared in an apple orchard. RESULTS: Thirteen out of 22 sensory attributes differed significantly between the products. Slagtesvin på friland kræver optimeret driftsledelse for at mindske miljøbelastningen Organic Eprints

Ved produktion af svin på friland er det almindeligt at have søerne på græs, mens smågrisene ved fravænning sættes på stald med adgang til et betondækket udeareal. Det kan forekomme paradoksalt at en stor del af det økologiske svinekød stammer fra grise, som hovedparten af deres liv ikke har haft mulighed for naturlig adfærd i form af at rode, grave og græsse. Når producenterne vælger ikke at have slagtesvin på friland hænger det blandt andet sammen med en række forventede negative effekter, såsom et stort arealkrav, stor arbejdsbelastning, stort foderforbrug og stort tab af næringsstof til omgivelserne. Sow body condition at weaning and reproduction performance in organic piglet production Organic Eprints

The objective was to investigate the variation in backfat at weaning and its relations to reproduction results in organic sow herds in Denmark. The study included eight herds and 573 sows. The average backfat at weaning mean�13 mm; SD�4.2 mm) ranging from 10.5 to 17.3 mm among herds shows that it is possible to avoid poor body condition at weaning even with a lactation length of seven weeks or more. No main effect of backfat at weaning on reproduction performance was found, but the probability of a successful reproduction after weaning tended to decrease with decreasing backfat for first parity sows, whereas the opposite was the case for multiparous sows.

The effect of breed and feed-type on the sensory profile of breast meat in male broilers reared in an organic free-range system Organic Eprints

Studies on the sensory profiling of male broiler breast meat were carried out to evaluate the effect of two very different broiler breeds (JA757 and New Hampshire), two different feed types (broiler and grower feed) and age at slaughter (82 and 110 d). 2. The sensory profiling consisted of a pilot study, 4 training sessions, and finally the assessment. During the training session a panel of 9 assessors defined 17 attributes, which were used to describe the smell, texture and flavour of the breast fillets. The mating behavior and reproduction performance in a multi-sire mating system for pigs Organic Eprints

An important aim of organic animal production is to allow natural animal behaviour. Regarding reproduction techniques, artificial insemination is permitted but natural mating is preferred. The outdoor multi-sire system, where the sows are placed in large paddocks with a group of boars, is one example of a service system, which complies well with the organic ideals of facilitating natural animal behavior. However, very little knowledge is available about such system. En af grundideerne i den økologiske fødevareproduktion er princippet om god dyrevelfærd for husdyrene, og det er et område der er kommet stadig mere fokus på i de senere år. Dyrenes velfærd afhænger i høj grad af sammenspillet mellem dyr, system og den daglige pasning, og der forventes derfor en stor variation i dyrenes velfærd fra bedrift til bedrift. Husdyrenes velfærd kan betragtes som et produktionsmål på linie med produktivitet, produktkvalitet og bedriftens miljøpåvirkning, og det er derfor nødvendigt for ægproducenten at have en metode til vurdering af hønernes velfærd på flokniveau. Velfærdsvurderingsrapporter, økologisk ægproduktion. Rapport fra afdelingen for Husdyrsundhed og Velfærd Organic Eprints

Det generelle indtryk af flokkens sundhedstilstand er god: holdet har en lav dødelighed, en høj læggeprocent, meget få gulvæg, en god vægtudvikling, bortset fra et enkelt fald, ingen tegn på fjerpilning eller problemer med fodhelse. Strøelsens beskaffenhed har en indflydelse på udviklingen af fodbylder, sygdomsudviklingen, mulighederne for god fjerpleje, aktivering mv. Hos driftsgren 182-1 har strøelsen været af en meget høj kvalitet hele produktionsperioden igennem, dvs. med et meget lavt gødningsindhold i øverste lag, store mængder sand, ingen skorpedannelse eller fugt. Der er dog tilsyneladende en opformering af blodmider i sommer/efterår. Der er god adgang til reder, vand og sandbad, dog er siddepindene og foderstrengen noget...
