Intrinsic and Enforceable Trust: A Research Agenda AgEcon
Hofstede, Gert Jan.
Trust is modelled as either enforceable or intrinsic. Antecedents of trust in history, human nature, personality and culture are analyzed. The implications of these for the dynamics of trust in business-to-business networks of organizations are discussed. Finally an agenda for empirical research is proposed, of which the author argues there is great need because of the crucial role of trust in networks of food provision.

Transparency in the Pork Supply Chain: Comparing China and The Netherlands AgEcon
Osinga, Sjoukje A.; Hofstede, Gert Jan.
We present a research plan to assess the value of transparency by comparing pork supply chains in The Netherlands and China. We assume that chain performance depends on chain configuration, which depends on societal context and its associated quality control institutions. We define chain configuration in terms of structure and transparency. In order to be able to assess the influence of societal context and its quality control institutions on chain configuration and performance, we compare two countries that have very different societies. Ultimately, our goal is to be able to indicate whether a certain chain configuration suits all, or whether chain configuration should be tailored to societal context.

Hofstede, Gert Jan; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
(Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the Dutch East India Company), one of the world’s major players in the international food market of the 17th and 18th centuries. Can the experiences of the VOC teach lessons that today’s food production networks may take to heart? There are three domains in which changes might have occurred since the times of the VOC that could be relevant to this question. These are the people themselves, the rules of the game that can be captured by the term governance, and context factors. The article will investigate all three. As far as the people are concerned it will look at factors such as worker conditions, attitudes, and culture in general. In the area of governance the paper will consider contract enforcement and coercion...

Ameseder, Christoph; House, Lisa; Haas, Rainer; Meixner, Oliver; Fritz, Melanie; Dahl, Ellie; Hofstede, Gert Jan.
Research on organizational and inter‐organizational trust has become an important field in management and marketing literature, as it is perceived as a pivotal aspect of business transactions. However, clarifications are still needed on the issue of whom we trust; is the person whom we are trading with trusted, or the organization, or just the product‐quality? Not only has this question not been answered within this field of research, neither have cultural differences have been described to any great extent. Additionally, if the perceived factors important to establish trusting relationships may or may not be the same on the buyers and the sellers side in international business transaction in food chains. The primary objective of this research study...
