Remittances and economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean: The Impact of the human capital development AgEcon
Garcia-Fuentes, Pablo A.; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
Remittances are one source of external financing for developing countries that have been increasing in both size and importance as of late. However, the issue about the impact on economic growth from remittances is still opened for discussion. This paper adds to this discussion by investigating the impact of remittances on growth through human capital using a panel data analysis for a sample of 14 Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries during the period 1975-2000. The results indicate that remittances have a positive impact on economic growth in the representative countries from the LAC region; however, the realization of this impact holds only when the remittance receiving country has a minimum threshold of human capital stock.

Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures : A Game Theoretic Approach of Comparative Evaluation AgEcon
Banerjee, Nandini; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This paper tries to assess the impact of Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures in the context of agricultural imports. The WTO induced Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) policy is restrictive and it is affecting severely the exports from developing nations. This paper tries to explore whether there can be conditions under which certain restrictions can be mutually beneficial both for the exporter and the importer. A game theoretic model has been proposed to determine whether the policy in its current form generates mutually beneficial payoffs.

STRUCTURE AND CONDUCT OF THE WORLD RICE MARKET AgEcon
Kang, Hyunsoo; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the world rice market through a Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) framework utilizing annual data from 1970 to 2007. Since World War Two, the world rice market has been very unstable, with rice prices experiencing volatile swings in both rice price and rice availability. Therefore, a SCP framework can provide crucial insight into the world rice market for policy makers. Also, this paper describes the effects of total production, export rice price, and real exchange rate for exporting countries on total export volume from an export supply model standpoint. On the basis of these results, it is evident that market power exists in the international rice market with respect to supply elasticity and an exporting...

The Exchange Rate and Inward Foreign Direct Investment in Mexico AgEcon
Parajuli, Shanta; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This paper analyzed the exchange rate and inward foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mexico from the 25 developed countries comprising the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Our empirical result does not support the significant relationship between exchange rate and exchange rate volatility to determine FDI in Mexico. The wages, export, and distance are found to be significant variables to determine FDI in Mexico which is supported by literatures.

The Impact of Central American Free Trade Area (CAFTA) on the United States sugar market AgEcon
Marzoughi, Hassan; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This paper tries to estimate the impact of establishment of CAFTA on the United States sugar market. We use the United States sugar demand elasticity and the amount of increase in the U.S. sugar import quota under CAFTA agreement to estimate the magnitude of this effect. This study shows that these increased imports will result in a decrease in the U.S. domestic sugar price of about 1.7 cents, or approximately 8.6 percent. Although it amounts to only pennies per pound, this decrease in the domestic price could result in the incursion of significant U.S. government expenditures given the current structure of the U.S. non-recourse loan program.

The Impact of Ethanol Production on the U.S. Gasoline Market AgEcon
Marzoughi, Hassan; Kennedy, P. Lynn.

THE RELATIONSHIPS OF TRADE, ECONOMIC GROWTH, AND MARKET POWER: THE CASE OF RICE EXPORTING AgEcon
Kang, Hyunsoo; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
This paper aims to (1) analyze the relationship between rice exports and economic growth for the world’s top four exporting countries (Thailand, Vietnam, India, and the U.S) and (2) seek to determine to what extent market power affects a country’s economic growth. The main objective of this paper is to determine to what extent economic growth impacts a country’s rice exports as well as to what extent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) impacts a country’s ability to export rice. This analysis also examines the impact of market power on economic growth. On the basis of these results, we examine the existence of market power in the international rice market with respect to rice supply, and moreover, propose that there is a bi-directional causality between the...

WELFARE EFFECTS OF AGRICULTURAL TRADING BLOCS: THE SIMULATION OF A NORTH AMERICAN CUSTOMS UNION AgEcon
Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hughes, Karol W..
Agricultural trade liberalization among the three North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signatories is modeled using a political preference function. The model distinguishes among Canada, Mexico, the United States, and a politically passive rest of the world. Through the use of intracountry compensation, the analysis shows that, from an agricultural perspective, economic integration is in the best interest of the group as a whole, although not in the best interest of individual countries. More specifically, of the agricultural production sectors, Canadian dairy, Mexican corn, and U.S. beef producers suffer the greatest losses from the formation of North American customs union.
