Pests and diseases in a changing climate a major challenge for Finnish crop production Organic Eprints

A longer growing season and higher accumulated effective temperature sum (ETS) will improve crop production potential in Finland. The production potential of new or at present underutilised crops (e.g. maize (Zea mays L.), oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.), lucerne (Medicago sativa L.)) will improve and it will be possible to grow more productive varieties of the currently grown crops (spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oats (Avena sativa L.)). Relationships between climate and winter cereal grain quality in Finland and their potential for forecasting Organic Eprints

Many studies have demonstrated the effects of climate on cereal yield, but there has been little work carried out examining the relationships between climate and cereal grain quality on a national scale. In this study national mean hectolitre weight for both rye and winter wheat in Finland was modelled using monthly gridded accumulated snow depth, precipitation rate, solar radiation and temperature over the period 1971 to 2001. Variables with significant relationships in correlation analysis both before and after difference detrending were further investigated using forward stepwise regression. Significant decrease in yield under future climate conditions: Stabilityand production of 138 spring barley accessions Organic Eprints

tThe response in production parameters to projected future levels of temperature, atmospheric carbondioxide ([CO2]), and ozone ([O3]) was investigated in 138 spring barley accessions. The comprehensive setof landraces, cultivars, and breeder-lines, were during their entire life cycle exposed to a two-factor treat-ment of combined elevated temperature (+5°C day/night) and [CO2] (700 ppm), as well as single-factortreatments of elevated temperature (+5°C day/night), [CO2] (700 ppm), and [O3] (100–150 ppb). Nutrient use efficacy and resistance to seed borne diseases in European spring barley cultivars and landraces Organic Eprints

A two-year field experiment was conducted during 2011‒2012 to study the breeding effect on N use efficiency traits of barley. All together 195 genotypes (72 the Nordic Genetic Resource Center landraces and 123 cultivars released during 1916-2010) were grown in two N regimes (35 and 70 kg N/ha) at the experimental farm of MTT Agrifood Research Finland (presently Natural Resources Institute Finland) in Jokioinen. The results revealed clear positive breeding effect on N use efficiency in barley cultivars. Breeding had also improved grain yield, disease resistance and traits related to yield, like grain number, grain weight and harvest index

Spring cereals: from dynamic ideotypes to cultivars in Northern latitudes Organic Eprints

The ideotype of a crop is a model of a plant community where all necessary and beneficial traits for crop performance in a particular environment are combined. It is important to consider the environment when developing an ideotype since climatic, edaphic and agronomic features of the target region have a major role in determining crop performance. New technologies, high yielding cultivars, irrigation and water management, plant protection materials and more skilful farm management practices have increased yields and yield potentials on cereals in Finland as in many other countries. Eco-efficient production of spring barley in a changed climate: a Life Cycle Assessment including primary data from future climate scenarios. Organic Eprints

The paper has two main objectives: (i) to assess the eco-efficiency of spring barley cultivation for malting in Denmark in a future changed climate (700 ppm [CO2] and +5 °C) through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and (ii) to compare alternative future cultivation scenarios, both excluding and including earlier sowing and cultivar selection as measures of adaptation to a changed climate. Climate change and Nordic crop production Organic Eprints

Climate change has evident, large-scale, negative impacts on global food production. Northern hemisphere will not remain unaffected by global warming: generally temperatures are expected to elevate at high latitudes and thus especially in the Nordic countries, even more than elsewhere in Europe or globally. In the northernmost Europe, especially Finland, Norway and Sweden, crop production is practiced at latitudes higher than anywhere else. Consequently, our production systems will need to be adapted to challenges and opportunities brought by changing climate.

Cultivar improvement and environmental variability in yield removed nitrogen of spring cereals and rapeseed in northern growing conditions according to a long-term dataset Organic Eprints

The balance between applied and harvested nitrogen (yield removed nitrogen, YRN %) is a recognized indicator of the risk of N leaching. In this study we monitored the genetic improvements and environmental variability as well as differences among crop species (spring cereals and rapeseed) in YRN in order to characterize changes that have occurred and environmental constraints associated with reducing N leaching into the environment. Are there indications of climate change induced increases in variability of major field crops in the northernmost European conditions? Organic Eprints

Climate change and prolongation of growing season: changes in regional potential for field crop production in Finland Organic Eprints

Climate change offers new opportunities for Finnish field crop production, which is currently limited by the short growing season. A warmer climate will extend the thermal growing season and the physiologically effective part of it. Winters will also become milder, enabling introduction of winter-sown crops to a greater extent than is possible today. Impact dehulling oat grain to improve quality of on-farm produced feed. I. Hullability and associated changes in nutritive value and energy content Organic Eprints

High hull content of oat (Avena sativa L.) limits its use as on-farm feed. Dehulling, used in the oat processing industry, can be performed on-farm, to increase nutritive value and energy content. A laboratory model of an impact oat dehuller, similar to a commercial device, was used to study the effects of rotation speed, grain characteristics and moisture content on hullability and groat energy content. Grain of oat cultivar Salo [from official variety trials, MTT Agrifood Research Finland, Jokioinen (60°49'N), 1996–2000] was assessed for quality prior to dehulling.
