Behavior pattern of beef heifers supplemented with different energy sources on oat and ryegrass pasture R. Bras. Zootec.
Pizzuti,Luiz Angelo Damian; Alves Filho,Dari Celestino; Brondani,Ivan Luiz; Pacheco,Paulo Santana; Freitas,Leandro da Silva; Segabinazzi,Luciane Rumpel; Callegaro,Álisson Marian; Teixeira,Odilene de Souza.
The objective of this study was to evaluate behavior patterns of heifers grazing on black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), fed supplementation with brown rice meal and/or protected fat. A total of 28 Charolais × Nellore crossbred heifers at average initial age of 18 months and with initial live weight of 274.9±4.97 kg were used in the experiment. Animals were kept in oat + ryegrass pastures and distributed in the following treatments: no supplementation; Megalac (MEG): protected fat supplementation; supplementation with brown rice meal (BRM); and supplementation with BRM + MEG. The neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake of pasture either in kg or in percentage of live weight was not changed by supply of supplement, but...

Sources of carbohydrates in the ingestive behavior of feedlot steers R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Viviane Santos da; Alves Filho,Dari Celestino; Freitas,Leandro da Silva; Brondani,Ivan Luiz; Restle,João; Azevedo Junior,Ricardo Lima de; Teixeira,Odilene de Souza; Borchate,Daniele.
In this article we research the influence of different sources of carbohydrates (corn, soybean hulls or wheat bran) upon the digestive behavior of 24 confined castrated steers with an initial average age and weight of 20 months and 330 kg born from the cross between Charolais and Nellore. The diet was composed of 40% sorghum silage and 60% concentrate. The time spent on total ruminating (an average of 454.6 min/day) was not influenced by the source of carbohydrate. The animals from the wheat bran treatment spent less time idle (718 min) in relation to those on the corn and soybean hulls treatments, which did not differ between themselves (an average of 792 min/day). The steers from the wheat bran treatment remained less time feeding (184 min/day) compared...

Risks associated to different methods of increasing pregnancy rate of cows in cow-calf systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Oliveira,Tamara Esteves De; Barcellos,Júlio Otávio Jardim; Whittier,Jack; Teixeira,Odilene de Souza; Freitas,David Santos de; Oaigen,Ricardo Pedroso; Dill,Matheus Dhein; McManus,Concepta.
ABSTRACT This study assessed the risks of different management practices to increase pregnancy rate in beef cow-calf systems, aiming at assisting decision-making. The perception of 18 experts on animal sciences regarding the risks of 32 nutritional, breeding, and general management practices applied to increase pregnancy rate were evaluated through questionnaires. The experts were selected by a non-probability sampling of researchers on veterinary and animal sciences. In addition, five farmers and eight technical consultants were also selected. The questionnaire was applied during a face-to-face meeting. The risk of each practice was assessed according to four factors, namely, cost, technical knowledge, operational complexity, and flexibility, and an...

Typology of beef production systems according to bioeconomic efficiency in the south of Brazil Ciência Rural
Canozzi,Maria Eugênia Andrighetto; Marques,Pedro Rocha; Teixeira,Odilene de Souza; Pimentel,Concepta Margaret McManus; Dill,Matheus Dhein; Barcellos,Júlio Otávio Jardim.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the bioeconomic efficiency of beef cattle production systems in the south of Brazil. A survey was conducted with 33 beef cattle farmers operating with complete cycle production systems in areas larger or equal to 900 ha. Answers were classified in two drivers, technology (TEC) and management (MAN), which were separated into subfactors with their respective components. Multiple correspondence analysis, Tukey test, cluster analysis, and Pearson correlation were the statistics procedures. The TEC components were above normal for Brazilian farmers, but the gross margin is still lower than that needed to generate financial resources for a proper remuneration of cattle farmer. Farmers were classified into...

Modelling beef cattle production systems from the Pampas in Brazil to assess intensification options Scientia Agricola
Lampert,Vinícius do Nascimento; Canozzi,Maria Eugênia Andrighetto; McManus,Concepta Margaret; Dill,Matheus Dhein; Oliveira,Tamara Esteves de; Mercio,Thomaz Zara; Teixeira,Odilene de Souza; Barcellos,Júlio Otávio Jardim.
ABSTRACT Traditional livestock productivity is hard to estimate, since it depends on a gamut of animal production indicators that are difficult to measure for many farms. Thus, we propose an analytical method for estimating productivity and understanding the importance of animal production indicators under different full-cycle cattle production systems in Brazil. To evaluate the impact of these indicators, equations were derived from a comutational model of herd evolution for estimating the output parameters of the system as follows: productivity per hectare (PH) and offtake rate (COR), as a function of the indicators; calving rate (CR), mating age (AM), age of slaughter (AS) and stocking rate (SR). For this analysis, twenty-seven scenarios (simulation...
