Trends of anthropogenic CO 2 along 20º W in the Iberian Basin ArchiMer

The carbon system in the water masses of the Iberian Basin (North Atlantic Ocean) has been affected over the last two decades by the increase in anthropogenic CO2 (C-ant). In order to study the storage of C-ant in the Iberian Basin, variables of the carbonic system (i.e., pH, total inorganic carbon, and total alkalinity), among others, were measured during the CAIBOX cruise conducted between July and August 2009 within the framework of the CAIBEX project (Shelf-Ocean Exchanges in the Canary-Iberian Large Marine Ecosystem). Temporal variability of the anthropogenic CO2 storage in the Irminger Sea ArchiMer

The anthropogenic CO2 (C-ant) estimates from cruises spanning more than two decades (1981-2006) in the Irminger Sea area of the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre reveal a large variability in the C-ant storage rates. During the early 1990's, the C-ant storage rates (2.3 +/- 0.6 mol C m(-2) yr(-1)) doubled the average rate for 1981-2006 (1.1 +/- 0.1 mol C m(-2) yr(-1)), whilst a remarkable drop to almost half that average followed from 1997 onwards. The C-ant storage evolution runs parallel to chlorofluorocarbon-12 inventories and is in good agreement with C-ant uptake rates of increase calculated from sea surface pCO(2) measurements. A high-quality inorganic carbon system database, spanning over three decades (1981-2006) and comprising of 13 cruises, has allowed the applying of the phi C degrees(T) method and coming up with estimates of the anthropogenic CO2 (C-ant) stored in the main water masses of the North Atlantic. In the studied region, strong convective processes convey surface properties, like C-ant, into deeper ocean layers and grants this region an added oceanographic interest from the point of view of air-sea CO2 exchanges. Observed acidification trends in North Atlantic water masses ArchiMer

The lack of observational pH data has made it difficult to assess recent rates of ocean acidification, particularly in the high latitudes. Here we present a time series that spans over 27 yr (1981-2008) of high-quality carbon system measurements in the North Atlantic, which comprises fourteen cruises and covers the important water mass formation areas of the Irminger and Iceland Basins. We provide direct quantification of acidification rates in upper and intermediate North Atlantic waters. The highest rates were associated with surface waters and with Labrador Sea Water (LSW). Anthropogenic carbon distributions in the Atlantic Ocean: data-based estimates from the Arctic to the Antarctic ArchiMer

Five of the most recent observational methods to estimate anthropogenic CO2 (Cant) are applied to a high-quality dataset from five representative sections of the Atlantic Ocean extending from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Between latitudes 60° N–40° S all methods give similar spatial distributions and magnitude of Cant. Conversely, large discrepancies are found in the Southern Ocean and Nordic Seas. The differences in the Southern Ocean have a significant impact on the anthropogenic carbon inventories. The calculated total inventories of Cant for the Atlantic referred to 1994 range from 48 to 67 Pg (1015 g) of carbon, with an average of 54±8 Pg C, which is higher than previous estimates.
